Claudia Rivera Oh, thank you so much for your support and encouragement! After placing the wipe into the box, it's necessary to check the consistency regularly because some paints tend to absorb the humidity very quickly and some take ages. It takes some getting used to... But for me, it's still the safest method because I am worried that the microwave might change the chemical balance of the makeup (I might be wrong though).

+Megan Yes Megan, I see what you mean. Although I think it does help to be creative and to enjoy painting / drawing, the art of face painting is quite different because skin absorbs moisture so the makeup doesn't "behave" as it would on paper or canvas. The second difficulty is the child moving around at the most unexpected moment. This takes some getting used to be hang in there! Everything is difficult before it is easy 😀

Hi Sophie! Your videos are so great and helpful; clear, to the point with all the necessary information. Thank you so much! Can´t wait for the video about making stencils and other tips you may already be preparing ;-) I have a question in regards to the one-strokes ... I just got one with 6 colours and it seems to me to be too much for a small one-stroke cake. Would you agree that it is possibly best not to use more than 3 or a maximum of 4 colours for the small one-stroke cakes?
@SophiesTipps9 жыл бұрын
+Iris CR Thanks Iris for your lovely feedback! My stencil video will probably be delayed to November/December... I was planning on making it this month but I had so many last minute face painting jobs that I didn't manage to find the time. But it's definitely coming 😀 6 colours are a lot for a one-stroke cake but there are some on the market with that many colours - especially rainbow combinations - but I suspect that they are not made by hand. If you make one yourself, it's going to be very very hard cutting and handling 6 stripes that are so thin! I find that 4 are sometimes tricky but to be honest with you, I've never tried to put more in a one-stoke. Just give it a try! If it doesn't work out, you can always reduce the number of colours and make your stripes a bit thicker. Good luck!

@SophiesTipps6 жыл бұрын
I wish I could tell you but it's impossible to know because each brand uses their own numbering system. The best way to know would be to measure the width of the brush. A 3/4th brush is about 2,5 cm wide. Hope this helps.

@SophiesTipps8 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean Emily. I had the same problem too when I first started using them. The key is not to use too much water right away. A common mistake is to start with a brush too wet on a dry cake. What happens then, is that the water will first "sit" on the surface and then mix the colors together. Then, when you run your brush back and forth, you don't get a distinct color separation. My recommendation would be to first sprizt you cake with water (but only once or twice) - while the colors are slowly absorbing the moisture and getting softer, dip your brush once in water and tap the tip on a dry kitchen towel. Then start rubbing your brush on the surface of your cake. You will see that it doesn't slide very smoothly but no worries. Get a bit more water on your brush (but only the very tip), again touch slightly your dry kitchen towel with it and rub the cake again. Do this three or four times. You will then see that your colors stay nicely separated. This takes a bit longer then rushing with a lot of water but you will only needs to do this once. If you use one brush per split cake (which is what I do), you will see that when you use it a bit later, your cake will still be damp enough and since your brush will still hold some of the cake's colors, you will then just need to "reactivate" the colors on both the brush and the cake with a bit of sprayed water. This will take close to no time. I hope that this helps!

very good advice, I appreciate this............I wish I knew which white is the best one to use.....mine is too transparent and I need a rich white.......what do you recommend ...?
@SophiesTipps8 жыл бұрын
The best white ever EVER is the white from Wolfe FX but it's now very very difficult to find - especially in Europe where I live. The second best (in my opinion) is the white from Diamond FX. I haven't tried them all but quite a few and these two are my favourite for line work. They wouldn't be appropriate to cover a large area though. Good white for a base color (for example to do a skull or Hello Kitty) would be the whites from Mehron Paradise or Kryolan.

That was smart of you to list all the names they go by to save people confusion later. How did you apply the yellow and red on the butterfly shape that's on the left end of the first photo at the beginning? That must have been a brush cause a sponge isn't shaped in such a way to make sharp turns, upward at the top and downward at the bottom, unless you cut it into some sort of triangle shape and then bent it in the direction you wanted to lay down the paint and that would be a very contorted thing to do all around. The yellow above the eye looks like it has streaks of red mixed in it under the eyebrow.
@SophiesTipps7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe. For the yellow/red butterfly, I used a small spit cake with a 1/4 inch flat brush to create the outline of the wings first. I then pulled the yellow towards the inside with a sponge. You get a very soft transition of colors by using the split cakes. That's why they are so loved in the face painting community. This technique called "one stroke painting" however was originally created by Donna Dewberry for painting flowers on paper and was then taken over by face painters all over the world.

Hello 👋🏽 Your videos are very useful! Thank you for sharing your talent. Does the home made split cake work if I use different brands in the same cake?
@SophiesTipps5 жыл бұрын
Very good question! Well yes and no, it's a tough one to answer. I would say that it is best to use certain brands together. More "waxy" brands like Tag and Diamond FX do well together. More "Glycerin-based" paints like Mehren Paradise and Kryolan do also well together. Mixing is a bit more difficult but it works too. However, the glycerin-based stripe will get used up more quickly and you will end up with a dent in your cake after a while. Hope this helped a little bit.

Thanks for all the tips like the wet wipe to soften up hard paint, and planning the one-strokes in bigger containers so that you can grab whatever color combos you need out of one container. For sporting events mentioned at 11:05, did you say "different colors of wax" or "different colors of flags?" Who hires you for sporting events gigs and where do you set up? Could you please explain the gram rating, i.e. 10grams, 40 grams, etc? It can't be the amount of paint in the pot cause those stats are listed in milliliters or ounces. At the 8:30 mark, the white pot is much thicker. What is the content of that size vs. the other three? What are their gram ratings?
@SophiesTipps7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! The tip with the wet wipe is OK but it takes a while to soften the paint this way so one must not be in a hurry. What I do more often is soften the paint in the microwave but this is dangerous because the paint melts extremely quickly and gets so hot that it could burn you if you're not careful. It also starts "cooking" in just seconds. That's why I don't want to recommend this technique because a lot of kids watch my channel and I wouldn't want anything happening to them. The paint should be maximum 4 to 5 seconds in the microwave and maybe a tiny bit more if necessary. A close watch at all times is absolutely necessary. At 11:05 I say "different colors of flags". As you saw, I made a larger spit cake and with it, I can do the Italian flag and the French flag, because they both share the blue color in the middle. Living in Germany, I am often hired by sports clubs, mostly during the world cup or the European soccer cup events. Germans love to organise "Public Viewing" events where people gather and watch the game on a huge screen together. I then paint lots of flags and soccer balls there. Private companies also hire me when they do a privatised event at the Munich stadium, as a fun entertainment for their guests. But I've also painted at Basketball, Polo and Tennis events... There is a lot going on in the summer. Solid face paints are usually measured in grams. Milliliter is a unit for liquid things,, like water, perfume, etc. A regular round face painting pot is usually around 30 grams (about one once). The really big one you saw me use is 90 grams. I usually buy my white in this larger format. The brand Mehron Paradise is produced in the USA so they might not use grams, and I think that the quantity of paint in the regular format is around 40 grams.
@JoeDoe27 жыл бұрын
When I have doubts as to whether something will burn up quickly in the microwave, I manipulate both the time and the power setting. If something might melt in 5 seconds, I lower the temp to half power or less so as to not take any chances. Snazaroo is using mL. Don't know why since it's not a liquid. Sometimes it's on the lid, sometimes it's not. I haven't seen pics of other brands where they put the weight on the lid. I can't turn over any other brand of pots in person cause Snazaroo is the only brand sold in any store in my town. Websites won't show you the labels on the back so I can't see what other brands are telling you. I guess Snazaroo wants to be the oddballs in the face paint world and make you guess as to the gram weight. Do sports stadiums let anyone just buy space and set up, like with the Basketball, Polo and Tennis events you mentioned, or does some organization with authority always have to hire you? They don't do that here. There's no space for such people. There's the parking lot, the field (or court) and the inside of the stadium where the concessions (food) and restrooms are, and no room for anyone to put up a table anywhere without getting in someone's way. I could see maybe doing it at a kids soccer game where there are soccer fields, small bleachers for the parents, and plenty of green grass space you could borrow. This is showing me how many venues there are other than the typical kids birthday parties and other obvious functions. Never thought of the public viewing events. I think here they call them 'watch parties.' Sounds like you do plenty of adults. It's so easy to just think of this as a kid's industry. I'm still searching pics to get ideas, and it's mainly kids with a few adults, and the adults often have very elaborate designs that are rather impressive and must have taken a long time to do. I'll find myself looking at tiger pics and saying, "ok, I like the eyes of this one, the ears of that one, the muzzle of this one, the fur of that one, the patterns of that one" etc. I wish I knew digital art to put together my own frankenstein design made up of the best features from many different pics.

I recently bought a diamond fx split cake. the color splash split cake to be specific and I noticed that the side label said not for use on skin, for hair and special effects only...the face painting forum shop said nothing about this in their description . Have you experienced anything like this? Thank you! You're videos are amazing!
@SophiesTipps8 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with this particular split cake but I assume it has some neon colors in it, doesn' it? Neon face painting colors are a bit tricky because they are supposed to be visible under a so-called "black light" and are therefore made of specific chemicals that are probably not too great for the skin... I think that the manufacturers put this mention on their neon products to be in line with the strict cosmetic regulations in some countries (Europe in particular, which has some of the strictest rules). I personally hardly ever use them for this reason but I know lots and lots of face painters who use them regularly and never had any problems or received negative feedback regarding any type of irritation on the skin. It's a controversial subject and my opinion is the following: if you want to stay on the absolute safe side, don't use neon colors. However, one should consider that a face painting design is on the face for only a few hours at most, and I cannot imagine that the ingredients in these colors would be so harmful that they would have any effect on the skin in such a short time span... But this is only my opinion obviously. We breathe polluted air, eat hormones in our chicken and pesticide on our salads every day... which is actually much worse! If you need any more detailed information, I would recommend you contact the face painting forum shop or Diamond FX directly. I hope that they can give you a more "scientific" answer than mine... I hope that my "rambling" helped a little bit nonetheless 😃 Good luck and happy painting!

Can these be made with snazaroo paints ?
@SophiesTipps9 жыл бұрын
Jamie O'Brien I am not a Snazaroo expert and haven't tried all of their colors but according to my experience, I think it could be possible to make a split cake using their metallic or pearl range. They might be a bit too soft though so I'm not sure it would work very well... The regular range of Snaz face paints (matt) would not be appropriate in my opinion because they get too hard and dry. They also shrink slightly and tend also to crumble apart after a while. They might look OK in the split cake at the beginning but probably not after a few weeks. I have nothing against using Snazarroo but I personally wouldn't choose this brand to make split cakes.

Is it possible to use an split cake with a wide brush, instead of a sponge?
@SophiesTipps8 жыл бұрын
Yes that's possible but if your split cake is large, you will not be able to pick up all the colors at once - but only two or three. And it would be really unpractical to work on the face with a brush larger than 1 inch...

so just for clarification.... if the face paint is called a one stroke it just means it's smaller than a split cake?
@SophiesTipps4 жыл бұрын
One Stroke means that you apply several colors at once with just one stroke of a brush or a sponge. I know that it can get confusing because different brands call their cakes with different names (one-stroke cake, split cake, rainbow cake, arty cake, etc.). But usually there are two main sizes. The smaller one is applied with a 3/4 brush and the larger one usually with a sponge to cover a larger section of the face, for example to create a butterfly wing. But the name of the product does not necessarily have any relation to its size. But in a way you are right, usually the "one-stroke cakes" are the smaller ones but make sure you check anyway because the term one-stroke refers to a technique, not to a size.

It very much depend where you live. Snazarro is a UK brand so if you live there, you shouldn't have a problem getting your hands on it. It's more tricky in the US though. Unfortunately I don't know which online shops there carry this brand, sorry.
@NoNo-en4cr6 жыл бұрын
Alexis Ericksen Amazon sells some of snazaroo basic colors in single pots (range from 8.99-10.99) on amazon In the US I got them at michaels craft store. They had a kit for more face painting with multiple colors available all once to try everything out or you could go ahead and test out the primary 5 would cost you around $50 for all 5. They have online some coupons you could print out.

@SophiesTipps8 жыл бұрын
If you only paint for one day, I wouldn't recommend making your own split cake because you will need too many colors and spend too much money on your supplies. I would recommend buying the split cake already made in a face painting online shop. You can find a list of shops I recommend in the description box under the video. Hope this helps!

I don't buy my empty containers because I re-use the containers of face paints I used up. But it's possible to buy them empty. Depending on where you live, you can ask a face painting shop online if they sell them. I put a list of various shops in the description box below the video.

why do you find water bad face paints that include wax in them better for one stroke ?
@SophiesTipps9 жыл бұрын
david shema kantor Because the wax-based paints allow better color separation, which means that each color will be clearly visible and not blend too much with the color stripe next to it. This is better for a small cake like a one-stroke.

Is it better to buy a split-cake or buy my own?
@SophiesTipps9 жыл бұрын
+ElasticKitten13 Well it depends... If you are planning on doing a lot of face painting, it's worth making your own. You will save money and you will be able to create your very own color combo. However, if you only have a small set of face paints and use them only occasionally, you are better off buying a ready-made split cake. There are lots of great ones available from many online shops. If you need more info, let me know!

Hello 👋 I’m new to ur channel but absolutely LOVE it, I’ve been asked to volunteer to do face painting for a community barbecue for one day. I’ve never done face painting before and the barbecues in 2 days, so can u send me a link to your easiest but most effective tutorials, they’ve asked me to do quick things so a line of kids doesn’t build up. Can you also help me, I live in the Uk and to practice I bought cheap face paints in Poundland, but they were terrible! Where can I buy relatively cheap paints but that are good quality, and what colours should I get considering I’ll only use them for one day only! Thank you soooo much, your channels amazing have a great day!
@SophiesTipps5 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your message. Sorry for my late reply but your question only showed up now... I will answer anyway, maybe it will be useful for the future. As far as quick and easy tutorials, I recommend you just watch some on my channel but there are also a lot of other great face painting channels with easy tutorials. I would recommend starting with only 2 designs for girls (princess and butterfly) and 2 designs for boys (spiderman and tiger), this will make it easier for you to practice ahead of time and will reduce the choice on the event, hence speed up the decision process. Regarding your question on cheap but good face painting supplies in the UK, I am sorry to say that if you want quality face paint that makes it easier to achieve good results, it will not be cheap. I just made a video on where to buy face paints and I recommend a really good online shop in the UK, you might want to check it out. I hope that this was helpful. I wish you great success in the future!

I have to ask is Snazaroo good for beginners?
@SophiesTipps7 жыл бұрын
There are not paint brands specifically for beginners or advanced face painters. Each brand has its pros and cons. Snazaroo is good mostly for the base (using a sponge) but not for line work (using a brush). Its best, in my opinion to mix the brands in order to achieve different results. Hope this helps!
