Dear Shirley, thank you for this warts and all watercolour tutorial. By watching this and a few others of yours, it has helped me understand what happened to me to lose confidence with painting. I haven't painted in a long time, today thanks to this tutorial, I now understand some of the many problems I had with watercolour. Deep sigh of relief, I will use the right paper, also allowing the tubes of paint to dry out in the palette, explains why I had no control of my palette. Even using a better brush. Thank you so much. Feeling excited to have a go now that I know why I ended up in a hot mess. Awesome lesson Aubs xx

There is a lesson for all of us here. I did this tutorial ages ago and tried to do it from memory. I wish I could send you a copy because it's a real doozy. Basically I've spent all afternoon looking for your channel again, because I didn't like or subscribe to your channel! I'm going to redo this on a better quality paper this time round and actually paint following your tutorial. These are awesome tutorials by the way. If I can watch, paint from memory, and get something out that resembles a sea landscape - anyone can. I cannot thank you enough. Please keep doing these. They are awesome!

Hi Shirley So fabulous to find you..I have been attempting to learn watercolour painting for about 6 months (basically a complete novice) . Even though I have found a few people I like to follow...not one of them live in Australia which leads to their resource photos being very different to what I have. I know techniques should be able to be applied to various topics ...I find it just adds another problem to learning. I love your style-both your painting technique and your teaching presentation. Really excited to watch this again then giving it a try . Also looking forward watching more videos. So lovely to hear that rain on the roof..hope you continued to get more!

You produced a perfect painting on an imperfect paper for it. canson paper reps should give you credit. I liked and learnt the dance moves u did with your brush for the trees and foliage🤓 Also I just adored the sound of the rain in the background. No music needed. Thank you for the lovely honest video. I wasn't bored in any moment, really liked the live vibe. I love watercolor landscapes and i am always afraid of painting rocks. It's hard to make the same repetitive thing different sometimes. Esp when it's easier to do repetitive motion. I struggle in that area.

@shirleypeters
@shirleypeters 4 жыл бұрын
Thankyou. Good question! I think I will do a comparison video. But in short: rough paper is easier to paint on. Smooth papers are ideal for fine black lines and even, flat colour. The more expensive papers are robust and easier to work on. The cheaper ones absorb colour too easily and show “tide” marks. Definitely worth a video.

I just bumped into this video and was amazed at your studio, supplies and techniques. I am a beginner artist and can't afford top quality paint and paper, which results in frustration when the painting doesn't turn out like one of the masters. It then takes a lot of convincing to start another one. Have you been through such phase? How can I keep at it even if results are unsatisfying.

There are cheaper papers, but they still cost dollars! I like to use them just to demonstrate that you don’t need the expensive gear.

I would love to see you duplicate this picture in acrylics! I love to do small watercolors and then try them on a larger paper with acrylic. Sure glad i found you!!

Ha! That’s what I’m planning to do soon! I often use acrylic as watercolour, and just last week I demonstrated that for a local art society.

Thank you for sharing your video, I really liked your painting. Have you used water based crayons like lyra, I've been experimenting with them even though I don't consider myself a water colourist, my experimental pictures are coming up not too shabby! But I'm interested in how you would maybe use them, because as I said water colour isn't really my medium so I'm probably doing it all wrong, even if I am having fun! So would you consider doing a video on using these water colours or some other brand please. Thank you. Cheers from Tasmania!

@@shirleypeters thank you for replying, the very first time I went online, my husband said to think of a pen name (sort of), and it happened to be a gale force wind outside, and as it blew around the eaves, it made wooo ing sound so I thought howling wind was very apt on the day, and so it stayed. I'll look forward to a video on the water colour crayons/sticks, they really are quite fun to experiment with. Cheers!

I think the kneaded rubber is so handy to lift heavier pencil marks from a sketch prior to painting, by just pressing the rubber against lines... no rubbing involved... another hint blue tack seems just as good to me... this is what I use now...

Hi Shirley! Thank you for this video! Question - you squeeze tube paint out, then let it dry in the palette. I’ve heard (don’t remember the source) that tube paints aren’t made to re-wet like pan paints. Is that true? I have palettes from both sides of the fence, and don’t seem to have a problem, but I am a certified beginner. Thoughts?

The only way to use tube paints is to squeeze them into pans and let them totally dry. I have also heard that it’s not what they are designed for, but I don’t agree. You would end up using them too thickly if you squeezed straight from the tube. I have a video on preparing your watercolour palette. Have a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYazhopjiJl6jLM

Hi Shirley, could you please tell me the brand and size of your rigger? I see you mentioned Art Secret but wanted to make sure before trying to find it. It looks like a particularly great brush. Thanks so much for this awesome tutorial! I'm going to watch it again and paint along. Absolutely lovely!

Thanks Michelle. That’s great that you’ll paint along. I don’t think “Art Secret” sell a rigger. That sell mops. Try searching for this on Amazon. “SAA Imitation Sable Series Brush - Rigger Size 6” About $20.
