Hi Dan, I'm a golfer who's hands just WANT to be strongly griped on the club. Lots of pros will just tell guys like me I'm doing it wrong. I can hit the ball with power and precision, but sometimes i get the hooks, or no loft, especially with the driver. Your video is eye opening as to why this happens. Apparently you are a pro that recognizes that there are a lot of ways to hit a golf ball well. There are combinations of swing patterns that do not work well together, but a lot of different combinations that do. Teaching pros have got to realize that there is no one right way to swing a golf club. You seem to realize this. Thanks so much for this video! Can't wait to take what I've learned from you out on the course. Keep up the great work!

Due to this being an old video, I don't know if you will see this. Thanks for two things: 1) Being predisposed to a strong grip, 2) rotating the left forearm in the rotation to straighten the club face. This gave me a straight and high hit. Have not seen those two advices anywhere else. Thanks again.

Dan - Strengthing my trail hand help me control the club face and launch the ball higher with my semi strong lead. I'd say 2 1/2 knuckles. Going classic with the trail hand over was a DISASTER for my game..... Low snap hooks, it made me want to quit..... And I love you made the point at the end about all you have to worry about is keeping the bend at impact, you are soo right. It organically forced you to stay under and deliver a great strike.

In the past I was always told to have a neutral grip by all the 'experts' Recently as I worked with a trusted pro and as the rest of my swing started to get into better positions I've found that a stronger grip actually allows better hip rotation, less flipping and better strike. I've ended up with better dispersion and distance from the stronger grip.

All the big hitters on tour use a strong grip mate. They wrecked it’s more beneficial especially for amateurs who struggle with the right side.

Brilliant! I recently changed my grip to be strong, basically by just gripping the club a bit closed, and moving the hands towards the target to square the club face to reduce the spin loft which was way too high with my driver. Then I entered a tournament and fully fell apart, did not hit one good iron shot. Directly after the round, I did some punishment training and figured out I was just not rotating fully through impact and as soon as I started doing that; just like you said, rotating hips fully through impact, I started getting the best compression I have ever had (lower spin loft totally working for me). All Irons flew longer, straighter and with such a crisp contact I could not believe it. And as a bonus, by modulating the backswing length, but always committing to a full followthrough, I could also get perfect half shots that flew dead straight which I have never been able to do. There is just something so sweet about hitting a 6 iron just 100 yards but right on target. This video just made my day because now I believe that I should continue doing this and it was not just a fluke driving session.

Thanks for this video! I play with a strong grip and have been considering changing it after seeing multiple videos on how detrimental a strong grip is for your swing so really appreciate this video Dan

This is exactly what I've been working on and I came upon these "strong grip principles" through trial and error. Specifically, 1) continual hip/core rotation throughout the entire swing is critical, and 2) arms/hands in front of body is a must do (that is, maintain "arm triangle", created at address, throughout swing). I am striking 7 -PW perhaps better than I ever have (I'm 60 years old and have been playing since I was a boy), but I am still struggling with the occasional low left and no elevation with 4 iron through 6 iron. I've resisted left arm rotation, because (for me) it introduces a stronger possibility that I might get my hands behind me, which violates basic strong grip principles. I'll give it a try. Also, I know this is an old thread, but I wonder if opening my stance slightly at address might help with opening hips to target for us older golfers? Thanks so much. This video is excellent! There's hope for us strong grippers after all.

I've felt shamed in the past couple years about having a strong grip.... feeling much better now. I've also had golf pro's tell me i need lessons cause of it and actively worked on trying to have a more neutral grip or correct my swing which set me back months of progress. Wasn't till i watched DJ and few others state their unconventional swings and how they organically learned it that way as a kid. Unless you really have a jacked up swing, i say embrace what you have if you're sub 10 HC and improve what you have. I'm currently a 7 HC and am hoping to be scratch by end of the year.

this is EXACTLY where i have been for 3 years. Cannot change my strong grip, never will. Every golf coach I have ever seen tries to weak my grip and flatten my left wrist (right hand golfer).....it always makes me feel retarted and useless for the next 6 months.....I am now going to make the coach use my strong grip to make me better or find a better coach finally. I am also a 10 handicap and play once a week

10 handicap here. I have a natural disposition for a strong grip with my irons and have struggled with the dreaded hook shot and yes the low runner hooking to the left as well. I always tried to turn my left forearm on the back swing like Dan said but always thought that compensating for a strong grip wasn't correct and i had to develop a neutral grip which feels so alien to me. I also figured i wasn't turning my hips fast enough on my drives and turning the hips really helped my drives since my grip is bit more neutral with my driver. I figured i needed also to rotate those hips faster on my irons. This video reconfirmed both my slight forearm rotation on my backswing and the increased hip speed to compensate for my strong iron grip. So happy that i can now play with a strong grip but just need to make some adjustments which are definitely doable. More doable than trying to develop an awkward neutral grip.

Great video, had lessons trying to fix my strong grip and felt like an absolute beginner got me nowhere. And all the videos on KZbin are based on a balanced grip so I’ve previously damaged the swing even more by keeping the right arm on top like you said in the backswing! The best players in the world have non-textbook swings you just need to embrace it especially if you’ve played that way for years, would definitely still recommend beginners trying to go by the book but swing your swing!

I am naturally very open at impact, about 45 degrees in hips and 30 degrees in shoulders... massive slices. Tried to fight it but that only caused me to hang back on the right side and resulted in massive hooks. I've started griping really strong - 3-4 knuckles showing - and am now finally hitting it straight with very good contact. The real key is the shaft lean AND staying behind the ball. Any move ahead of the ball with the upper body and a strong grip is out of bounds left territory.
@method3412 жыл бұрын
Yup that upper body lunge is a killer. It's crucial to start with the lower body and try to keep my head behind it until after impact.

Hi Dan, I struggle with delivering to much dynamic loft resulting in a ball flight that is too high and weak. I’m interested what you recommend to help combat this?
@sveinnorrisnland66534 жыл бұрын
I just found out with a GC quad session that I had this problem, which was especially painful for my driver which should be flying 300 yards, but I was basically only going 260 and plugging in the fairway. What I did was get familiar with the definition of spin loft, and understand how you can manipulate that, which basically means having a delofted impact position and not too negative an attack angle. What I just did was setup as I usually did, but grip the club 10-15 degrees strong and then move the hands towards the target until you see the club face square up, and then focus on keeping this angle of the hands and club until impact. Then the only thing you need to do in the downswing is to commit to a powerful followthrough that will guarantee that you hips will be open at impact and all will be well. But I also read that if you have some mobility issues in your hips that prevent a strong followthrough, then the strong grip may not be for you. In that case a neutral grip and a more handsy swing may be your only option, with the length deficit that naturally comes with that.

Been playing for 4 years . First 2 years No idea what I was doing . Last year had a swing stuck with it got way better. This year wanted to get even better and noticed was chunking a lot and driver was a mess slice, pop ups. Took a good hour lesson with video, metrics, and I had a -13 swing path meaning way way way over the top. Part of it was grip. Changed my grip and now go inside out. I basically feel like I am aiming 45 degrees right. Wow with my irons . I hook 1/4 still at the range but the other 3 are either straight or 10 degrees right of target but at least 15 yards longer on every club. My 7 Iron I was hitting around 140 to 150 if I hit it really good. Now it is 155 to even 165 with a slight draw sometimes . My Wedge, 9 and 8 go way longer too. Not sure if grip works for Hybrids as i cant seem to figure those things out this season. Struggled all summer. Driver I don't slice but now I tend to push. Would love feedback on why my irons don't push as much with the grip and inside out but the driver seems to want to.

Please explain. I notice that when setting up i do tend to focus on the clubface-ball relation. I sometimes end up overthinking it as I try to analyze if the clubface is too open or too closed. I need to stop this so your comment stood out.

@@Silenced_by_nazi_youtube Just try not looking at the Ball as much. Glance at it if anything as you approach the bal or looking at your direction of shot. My woes came from mostly staring at the damn ball. Soon as I started trusting the feelings, you'll look down at the ball one last time b efore you hit and know you're right! YOu won't over think it because you'll feel right. Less going on = better shots.
@Silenced_by_nazi_youtube3 жыл бұрын
@@NonnyStrikes that makes sense...because the pros never hover around the ball. They set up to it and hit and it seems to go fine. I need to mentally do this when playing.
@NonnyStrikes3 жыл бұрын
@@Silenced_by_nazi_youtube warming up a bit is one of the best things to do. Stretch a little, get the blood going. Hit a few balls... and if they don't go great... don't sweat it. Look at it in the way you would if you were learning guitar. You wouldn't play blazing fast and accurate immediately. It would start with slow, repetitive motions. Learning what the pick does to make what noise... combined with how much pressure affects the tone of it. If you slow down.. and spend time understanding the weight of the golf club and how it reacts to you turning your body and moving your arms... it's incredible. Seriously one of the best feelings is hitting great shots...time after time. There are many doorways though. So that being the case..you have to be aware at all time of what you're doing physically. You see those guys on TV breathing and focusing. It's a mantra. I think if a person can progress positively with golf, they can do anything requiring mental strength. Almost anything. Cheers man. I can tell you're into it. Just keep that enthusiasm and focus more on you... take what I say... and make it your own.
