Bank you for your lessons Jim. About 10 years ago I got a Deering Good time, my biggest hurdle was being a guitar player instead of a banjo player first 🤣 My live instructor was Max B. around Tulsa. I'm almost 60 years old now and every since I lost my banjo in the stupid pawn shop about 7 years ago it felt like part of my soul disappeared. I drive an 18 wheeler from Tulsa to Dallas and back and I must say that even without having a banjo in my hands while driving i am enjoying your song tutorials and I'm seeing there's many ways a song can be played. I love your "I'll fly away " rendition" Max taught me a different way to play that song but I really like your way. I picked up new Recording King banjo and I enjoy just holding it in my lap! Thanks for helping me to get back to enjoying some much needed peace again! May God richly bless you sir!

Hi Jim! I discovered you during the pandemic stay-home, did all 10 lessons in a row and subscribed. Recently I tackled "Foggy Mt. Breakdown," which was challenging, but a rewarding step up. Comparing your lesson on "Foggy Mt. Breakdown," which you made a few years ago, with this "I'll Fly Away" tutorial, June 2020, I see you're back on concert pitch. Thanks! (Kidding!) I enjoy all of your lessons and look forward to whatever you do next. Thanks for such great help to all pickers.

Jim I've been working on this tune for months. I worked on the easier stuff in the beginners lesson too but I'd just kept tinkering with this one cause I love it so much. For the first time tonight I was able to play everything but the chorus in time with you (the part where you play it slow). I nearly cried lol. I love banjo so much! I've got to learn the walk up and I should have all the chorus down. This arrangement is my favorite for this song. I am going to play this tune till my tuners fall off!

Jim, This is one of my favorite videos of yours. I really appreciate you starting the video with the full tune. In some of your lessons, I’m not as familiar with the melody, so it is difficult for me to pick it up by ear. I find myself often forwarding your videos to the end to watch you play at speed and then going back to watch your technique. This format simplifies things. Thanks for all of the great content!

Got my banjo a year and a half ago and I found your beginner series. It was really frustrating at first because I had never played a stringed instrument before (percussionist background). But now I can watch one of these videos and figure out most any song although I still can't play very fast! Thanks for setting such a strong foundation with that beginner series. I recently got a mandolin as my college grad gift. Any chance you could do a beginner mandolin series? One can only hope! Cheers

Hi Jim! Thank you so much for making these videos, they really help me break down the songs into manageable sections and make me feel like I can actually play this thing! I have a question, during the C-chord sections it looks like you are doing something a little extra in the left hand, middle finger moving a little and the tune is different than what the tutorial seems to show. Do you explain that technique somewhere? I love the way it sounds and can’t quite replicate it
@JimPankey
@JimPankey 3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I posted this so without literally transcribing what I did there I'm not entirely sure. However, if you're spotting a difference I bet you can figure it out. Don't forget you can use the slowdown feature. Either way, where I break it down works... and you can play along with the intro.

I figured it out! The drive that comes from your right hand so naturally comes from years of playing in a band in front of an audience. When I listen to others on KZbin doing banjo tutorials they just never have that same pop. But in all the jam videos the players always add more personality to help them stand out more and to accentuate the other players. Did I nail it?

@@JimPankey Thanks for the encouragement. The performance went very well! I ended up playing it at two different churches this weekend, and both went wonderfully. I did run into a bit of a challenge leading up to it though. I printed off the music for it a few weeks ago but misplaced it. I had it on my computer and was going to just print another copy, but I ran out of ink, and so did the store. Thankfully church I played at on Christmas Eve had the song in their hymnal. So I didn't have to play it from memory or from someone's phone.

I'm pretty much a year in learning the banjo here in Sweden. I came from playing guitar and expected I'd hit the ground running. Your version of Old home place slowed me down enough to realize by learning the standard licks and rolls you can pretty much figure out a lot of songs. This one looks like a good one to do next. Any tips from you guys on other songs that are slower like this and sounds nice without a full band? Jim Pankey you are the GOAT of teaching!

So I learned cripple creek using your beginner series and decided I'd learn this as my second song on the banjo. I can play up to the chorus after a month of practice. I gotta learn to take baby steps lol. The timing on this is really difficult.

Yes, it would really make sense to finish the beginner series before jumping off the high dive here.

@@JimPankey Why thank you!! You have such a good personality, it is so fun to learn from your tutorials!! I just started playing the banjo a little over a month ago, and videos like this are helping so much! I don't read banjo tabs, so I really depend on KZbin videos! Haha! I wish I had started learning when I was a kid, but starting at 21 is better than never!!
