Bank you for your lessons Jim. About 10 years ago I got a Deering Good time, my biggest hurdle was being a guitar player instead of a banjo player first 🤣 My live instructor was Max B. around Tulsa. I'm almost 60 years old now and every since I lost my banjo in the stupid pawn shop about 7 years ago it felt like part of my soul disappeared. I drive an 18 wheeler from Tulsa to Dallas and back and I must say that even without having a banjo in my hands while driving i am enjoying your song tutorials and I'm seeing there's many ways a song can be played. I love your "I'll fly away " rendition" Max taught me a different way to play that song but I really like your way. I picked up new Recording King banjo and I enjoy just holding it in my lap! Thanks for helping me to get back to enjoying some much needed peace again! May God richly bless you sir!

Hi Jim! Thank you so much for making these videos, they really help me break down the songs into manageable sections and make me feel like I can actually play this thing! I have a question, during the C-chord sections it looks like you are doing something a little extra in the left hand, middle finger moving a little and the tune is different than what the tutorial seems to show. Do you explain that technique somewhere? I love the way it sounds and can’t quite replicate it
@JimPankey3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I posted this so without literally transcribing what I did there I'm not entirely sure. However, if you're spotting a difference I bet you can figure it out. Don't forget you can use the slowdown feature. Either way, where I break it down works... and you can play along with the intro.

@cb733 жыл бұрын
I figured it out! The drive that comes from your right hand so naturally comes from years of playing in a band in front of an audience. When I listen to others on KZbin doing banjo tutorials they just never have that same pop. But in all the jam videos the players always add more personality to help them stand out more and to accentuate the other players. Did I nail it?
@JimPankey3 жыл бұрын
Part of it comes from playing with others. Part of it comes from focusing on the tone and attack.

@@JimPankey Thanks for the encouragement. The performance went very well! I ended up playing it at two different churches this weekend, and both went wonderfully. I did run into a bit of a challenge leading up to it though. I printed off the music for it a few weeks ago but misplaced it. I had it on my computer and was going to just print another copy, but I ran out of ink, and so did the store. Thankfully church I played at on Christmas Eve had the song in their hymnal. So I didn't have to play it from memory or from someone's phone.
