Thank you so much! I really appreciate this, I really do! (Sorry for bothering you all the time) I was expecting for you to dive into each variation and go over it in detail rather than skimming it

No worries! Sorry it took so long (I only record every once in awhile and try to do a bunch of vids at once, and then release ~1/week or so). Hope it's helpful! :) Thanks for your support! 😄

Hey Charlie, sorry for the lengthy questions but what is your typical process for learning a new piece? Do you separate it into sections and perfect each one before moving onto the next one, or do you get all of the notes down before slow practice? And lastly, how do you slow practice, and what strategies do you use to not get bored?
@CharlieAlbrightPianist7 ай бұрын
Hi @samuellennox2441! No worries at all for the questions. When I learn a new piece, my process depends on things like how long I have to learn it (is the concert soon or far away), what kind of music it is (is it easier-to-read "classical" music like Mozart, or harder-to-read "contemporary classical" like Prokofiev?), etc. My first step is usually trying to learn the notes because I'm such an awful sight reader; generally, I start from the beginning and go a little bit at a time. I don't think I "perfect" a section before moving on, but some people probably do. While I'm learning those, I try to also make it musical as much as I can. When I can get it up to speed, the memorization usually comes pretty quickly for me. I'll also listen to various recordings to help get the piece in my ear and an idea for different interpretations. If it's a concerto, I'll often play along with different recordings to get a better feel of how the orchestra parts are. "Slow practicing" is a way of practicing that can help with lots of things including evening out notes, helping with technical passages, etc. It does often involve playing slowly, but also combining that with things like practicing the notes in an off-rhythm (i.e. long-short, short-long), staccato, etc. way. Check out the Learn to Play Piano with Charlie playlist (kzbin.info/aero/PLzbZE1Ty4bjVz_mjqf8oXoH_IlcYwxOdH), where I go into a lot more detail on some of these great questions. Thanks for your support! 😄

Variation 5 should be played with great delicacy and fragility. Approach it like your grandmother’s very fine china that you do not want to break.

What is shaping?
@CharlieAlbrightPianist7 ай бұрын
Shaping is when you shape the music (ie musical lines) to make it musical and not “mechanical” sounding. This can be done in a lot of ways, including using gradual dynamics, “pulling” on notes, etc. I kind of touch on the topic in some of my other LTP videos, so be sure to check out that playlist! 😄
