What about water sprouts. I have six satomi dogwoods and have not done any substantial pruning yet. I don’t want to create water sprouts as I have heard that they are very predisposed to such from pruning.

you appear to be pruning by heading off longer branches rather than finding a suitable lateral. is that advisable?

It's called Apple Scab and your tree needs to be sprayed several time during the spring during bud break; I think that you need a professional for a 30 ft. tree. Check it out, it might not be as expensive as you think. I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of the sprays; not so much for pruning.

what time of year is best...fall here in Saskatchewan, and I want this thing trimmed before the snow and -30F hit...can I prune it now???sure hope so...

I hope in the time since you made this video and now you actually learned how to prune !! Indescriminately , with regard to the location of the cut on a side branch, is called 'topping' . Ask what Buddha would do AND listen . If that fails AWJ would D !
