when you are riding normally and you want to engine brake to slow down, you need to keep the clutch engaged. this is the same when you are doing emergency braking -- you need to keep the clutch engaged after you down shift. as for the brakes, you want to pull them in at the same time. you want to downshift and pull in both brakes all in one motion.

That's what I think too. My instincts would be to regain control and maneuver around rather than stopping completely only to be crushed from behind.

Killing the engine (and do nothing else) is equivalent to engine braking in the gear you are at. The point of downshifting is to engine brake at LOWER gears (lower gears = more effective engine braking). Killing the engine also makes you vulnerable after you stop because you will need to start the bike back up in order to take off. In certain instances you may need to take off immediately to avoid secondary collisions. Hope that helps.

I think I'm starting to understand. So the right side is both braking at the same time whilst left side is just an engaged clutch and left foot tapping down? I didn't know you could downshift while engaged I thought you had to disengage at every shift.

I personally pull in the clutch, engage the front and rear brakes, and downshift at the same time. While my bike is stopping via the front and back brakes, I would let the clutch out (quickly) which starts the engine braking. But yeah, now that you brought this up, I found a couple articles about how it is bad to downshift during an emergency (I added a link in my video description). It is a pretty interesting read but is AGAINST what MSF teaches!

downshifting has saved my life MORE times than I can count.....honestly these MSF instructors are usually the ones that got like 10 crashes under their belt....obviously they can't ride worth a shit!

Definitely enjoyed you Learning to Ride series. Hoping to get a hold of a cbr500r to start. Honestly the gearing is somewhat confusing to me. Ive been driving stick for 5 years and autox a good bit. So its N-1-2-3-4-5? You A&M alumni?

Hmm how does that work you down shift but hold in the clutch the whole time? Also is the sequence of the brakes rear first then front? or at the same time?

No way on engine braking, thats redundant to the rear brake with little control. You should be downshifting to the correct gear to roll on an escape if needed and use the rear brake to control rear tire braking, not the engine. Just sayin...

not if you're an experienced rider, downshifting can MAJORLY slow you down, just go very easy on the rear.
