Geonosian seems like a strange language with many impossible sounds. But in reality, it's straightforward and easy to learn. So come and learn so you can understand everything that Poggle the Lesser says!

This was pretty much my takeaway from this video. Like, it was interesting, but if he's going to continuously disregard pretty much the only official source of translation, then what is he even doing? And yeah, that scholar part was pretty funny; It was sort of like the infamous bomb scene in the 1966 Batman movie, where when it happens you can't help but be like, "okay, this has got to be self-aware".

Klik Klak points at a sketch of the deathstar, and says "poka, Poka!" with a light a and more influence on the o. He was telling them, 'weapon weapon, right here guys!'. Utterly chilling. I reached out to the EC back when this first aired offering to help with the possibility of a clone wars one, but I didn't hear back

“Weapon weapon” I immediately recognized that from Hawaiian. “Mahi mahi” is literally “fish fish” but the true mean of a repeated word is that it’s a very large, powerful, or especially important type of that thing. So “mahi-mahi” is in essence “the big fish” not “fish fish.”

@@bluethunderbolt9631 I disagree on Wunderwaffe. In German a "Wunderwaffe" (wonderweapon) means a high tech weapon you pull out of your arse to turn a loss into a victory. A weapon far past what is the standard and/or far cheaper than thought possible. If you found a way to produce 1000 instead of 100 rifles in the same time, that rifle could still be described as a Wunderwaffe. Nowadays in German that is not really that true anymore, as its mostly used in a mocking way, as its connected to the harebrained Nazi plans and completely overblown propaganda. If someone tells you in German that you found a "Wunderwaffe" for something, they are telling you its a foolish idea and is going to fail or even backfire in likely a very predictable and hilarious way. Superwaffe (super weapon) is the correct term. Its used to describe stuff like nuclear weapons, weapons that go far past what normal weapons do.

@vurrunna
@vurrunna 4 жыл бұрын
This video is amazing, and I love how you've been able to give so much culture and life to Geonosians, a species generally perceived as barbaric (even by canonical sources). One thing to note is that Geonosians also speak with a complex array of pheromones and body movement, to the extent that they can sometimes seem to communicate through telepathy to outsiders. To go along with your description, I imagine that pheromones would be used to express more abstract ideas like mood, emotion, sarcasm, intensity, certainty, etc., while body language might be used as a form of conjugation, perhaps denoting tense, person, subject, object, etc. Also of note are the varying forms of Geonosian we encounter. This video covers the Geonosian spoken by Archduke Poggle the Lesser, but throughout Attack of the Clones we also hear Geonosian spoken by the workers and warriors, which appears to be an entirely different language (the sounds were even recorded from animals, a mix of calls from specific breeds of penguin and fruit bat)--this speech is also used in the Clone Wars series. Another example is the Geonosian spoken by Klik-Klak in Rebels, which is distinct from the speech of both Poggle and the other Geonosians, as well as the screeching noises made by Karina the Great (the Geonosian Queen with the zombie servants from the Clone Wars). To account for the difference between the common Geonosians and Poggle the Lesser, I posit that Geonosian society employs multiple languages, primarily a common tongue spoken by most workers and warriors (relying on pheremones and body language as much as sound) and a high tongue spoken by the aristocracy (consisting of more common spoken noises, and no doubt adapted to better suit interactions with offworlders). Poggle's use of high tongue likely indicates both his status and the significance of the occasion (the Barhundai and the Death Star plans), and he may rely on it overly much to cover up his origins in the worker class (Poggle the Lesser actually rose to the aristocracy after fighting in a Barahundai). Meanwhile, the speech of Klik-Klak and screeching of Karina the Great are likely examples of separate languages. Unlike many other species, Geonosians are highly isolationist, not just from the galaxy, but from one another; in a culture built upon remaining separate from other hives and the galaxy at large, it only makes sense that hives would develop their own languages, perhaps even moreso than usual. These languages still carry much of the same basic material of Geonosian speech, but may be applied differently--such as Klik-Klak, a worker class drone, using speech with similar annunciation as Poggle the Lesser (i.e. modified human voice acting vs. modified animal noises).

It's shocking how this video makes these bugs suddenly feel much more human and alive to me than any movie scene, comic or wookieepedia entry ever could. It's mad how much of an influence language can have. Before, to me these were bugs that made cool noises. Now, I wonder about their culture and rituals, the quirks of their language and understand their motivations. Another gem from you, Henry.

Awesome analysis, EC! Note that in canon, the language is called "Geonosian hive-mind ," which implies all Geonosians share thoughts to an extent, and probably helps clear out ambiguities when they talk with their own kind. Also, there's a deleted scene from Episode II ("Anakin and Padmé on Trial") that has more Geonosian sentences spoken by Poggle; I'd be curious to see you analyze them.

This sounds more aesthetically pleasing than Klingon from Star Trek. Perhaps the last line is the superlative and thus should be translated as "I pray they won't take our Greatest weapon (Poteko poka) and use it against us!" This would be an awesome Conlang, but Star Wars doesn't really do Conlangs... Update here is my attempt to type out everything in IPA: rː ǀkʷuaɪ-ɛdʊ ɑǀaɪǀ́ǀ̀ rː gui ˈǀɒ-di bɑɾɑ'hʊndi nn'ɑːǀ ʊlʍɑ θɾˈɑː ˈʊʃ-vɒl tidɒ ʊnǀʊǀ́ǀ̀ ii jɑst kɒ ǀbʊɛ nibʊ sikk an-oǀ ɒxɾi pɔtɛkɒ pɔkɑ kiǀɑ rːgɛ kʊrː kɑs im-i ɛrːkɑ Or even rː ǀkʷuaɪe̋dʊ ɑǀaɪǀ̀ǀ́ rː gui ˈǀɒdi bɑɾɑ'hʊndi nn'ɑːǀ ʊlʍɑ θɾˈɑː ˈʊʃvɒl tidɒ ʊnǀʊǀ̀ǀ́ ii jɑst kɒ ǀbʊe̋ nibʊ sikk anoǀ ɒxɾi pɔte̋kɒ pɔkɑ kiǀɑ rːge̋ kʊrː kɑs imi e̋rːkɑ

Poteko poka as a concept makes a lot of sense. It is used as a weapon, to hurt, poteka, but also is an instrumental weapon/action/move in the sense of over time, rather than just its potential for destruction. Like the difference between I have a lazer, and I have prolonged lazer capabilities. It’s not just a weapon but it’s an asset. And in their battle based society, evidenced by the gladiatorial pits, asset and weapon would likely be very close

Could ,,im-i eRRkah" technically be translated to ,,May the Force be with us"? The Geonosians probably don't belive in the Force the same way the Jedi and the Sith do but it probably exists in their culture and I wouldn't be surprised if they prayed to it but under a different name. I think the Force is the only real supernatural power in the Star Wars universe but different cultures and beings feel it, sense it and even use it in different ways and would therefore call it by different names and have different ways of expressing it

10:45 To drive the point home: In ancient Hebrew, calling something the same thing twice means that it is the MOST of that particular thing. "King of kings" is a king above everything that exists, even other kings, "Song of songs" is music that is so beautiful that it supercedes all other music when played or sung, etc. So I'd imagine that it'd work similarly here, where the phrase "poteka poka" could also be the Geonosian way of saying "A weapon that outclasses all other weapons" or even simply "a Weapon that kills weapons". Just food for thought.
