My wife and I have never been sports fans but we recently moved to a bigger city and they have a local NHL team. We both have fallen in love with the sport! We go see them play home games as often as we can and our Autistic son loves it too! It’s action packed and I’m amazed at how talented these guys are to not only skate, but to be so skilled at playing WHILE skating. The atmosphere inside the stadium is unreal.

My number one tip for someone who haven't watched much hockey yet is find something to connect with emotionally in addition to having a favourite team. Is it a second or third favourite team? Is it a player? Is it a certain skill set on the ice? Even when I'm watching the game as a neutral, e.g. neither team ranks among my favourites I tend to pick out certain things and look out for those while watching the game. That makes me more invested in the actual watching experience as opposed to the game just happening in the background while I'm constantly being distracted by social media or some other things within my reach.

@@TwistedWristerHockey I mean it's hard to luck for clues on where the puck is, if you're completely new to hockey and you have no idea what's really going on. As a German I grew up with soccer and started to get into hockey relatively late compared to Canadiens who grew up with hockey as their national sport. So I still remember pretty well how my first few games I watched went. I tried to guess where the puck was based on the players' movements and body language, but I really had no idea what was going on and just celebrated when the other fans were celebrating :D

I spent my first few games mostly just listening to the announcers and watching the game with more of a vague view. I didn't try to track the puck at all, and honeslty by the third game or so I was able to track it with no problem

I got into hockey last year with my native German ice hockey league, and now I've finally reached the Nhl. Next season will be the first full Nhl season I will be following. The thing I love most about watching hockey is its fast pace. It just goes from end to end so quickly and that makes it so exciting. Something I don't like is the moments when someone fires the Puck and you have no idea where its gone, thanks on your tips on that.

To be more precise about TV timeouts, there are three scheduled in each period, coming after the first normal stoppage after the 6, 10, and 14-minute marks of the period. This means not after an icing (or any other scenario where one team or the other isn't allowed to change), and not after a goal, but also not in the middle of a power play, not less than a minute after the previous TV timeout, and not in the last 30 seconds of any period or the last two minutes of the third period. Now, in the playoffs, there's one timeout after the ten-minute mark of each overtime period following the first stoppage of any kind (including icings etc.), where they may or may not cut to commercial but will still take two minutes to scrape the ice. I'm a football/soccer fan from Chile, South America. I've been incresingly interested in ice hockey, cause it's very dynamic and you can appreciate the amount of talent that is required for both ice skating and managing the puck. And since the puck rarely goes out the pitch, it makes it a constant come-and-go.

I used to always pair Soccer and Hockey together in the group of sports that I didn’t care for. Mainly because i did not grow up in a state where either one of them was big, and because they are usually low scoring. But I recently moved to Denver and started following the Avs. And man was I wrong. It is sooo fast paced and action packed, and the stadiums are electric when watching the games in public. Im still trying to learn all of the rules and lingo. But man Im falling in love with this sport.

I’m a newbie to hockey. Haven’t watched it much in my life and never played it. Lately I’ve been getting more and more into it after watching the Avalanche play a night early this month. I’ve been trying to catch more games and learn the rules and lingo and try to understand more about what’s going on. As to answer your question, I like the fast paced flow of the match. It’s pretty amazing to see how much control these guys have going that fast and to be able to track the puck in a split second where I can barely even see where it’s at lol 😂. The referee doesn’t put his arm up for icing. Linesman cover icing, offside, and all faceoffs except after goals and to start the period. And they break up fights.

NHL games are expensive to attend so if you are looking for a basic introduction see if there is a university or major junior team in your area. Attending in person allows the opportunity to observe what is happening on the whole ice surface. That will show you defensive zone sets, offensive zone sets, set plays, break outs, cycles and penalty killing and power play sets. The puck travels faster than a human so passing is important for zone entry plays. Anyway, just a bit off the top of my head.

I like that its much faster paced than Baseball. As a fan I'm way more invested in watching every moment of the games vrs just "monitoring" a baseball game as it's on. Baseball tends to drag on for me.

As an Australian I found hokey be a lot easier to understand than other North American sports like NFL or baseball and far more entertaining. It's faster , more free flowing and very physical like our Australian rules football but on ice. I'm pretty new. I used to watch a buddy casually at his bar league matches. But not NHL, really. What I like about hockey are the speed and the fact that, unlike (for example ) football (soccer) there aren't players faking injuries just to cheat themselves into a chance at a point. At least, not that I've noticed so far. They're just being mature about things for the most part and getting with the game (of course fights are a thing but they draw penalties, usually for both sides).

Im getting back into it! I grew up in the 90s' in Staten Island, New York; therefore I have been happy to see the Rangers and the Ducks play! I think watching it on a high definition tv helps a bunch! Not to mention compared to American football the rules/penalties are easier to understand. The best way for someone new to get into hockey is to see a game in person. You’ll quickly get an appreciation for how fast the play is, and you’ll hear sounds that just can’t be heard on TV.

I'll admit that I have a problem with zoning out when I'm watching games, this goes for every sport. Even if I don't have my phone near me I still go into my Nothing Box like ten seconds after sitting down and glueing my eyes to the TV, and half the period later or when a goal is scored I finally realize that i went mentally missing that whole time and don't recall what i just watched. This happens less when im at a game in person but still happens. Its frustrating. I also dont notice a lot of penalties, i know what they are but during live action i miss them until the whistle blows and i see the replay. Again, i can be looking at the incident and not notice it right away.

I honestly zone out as well. I think what does that for me is that I get too fixated on watching wherever the puck goes. Alternatively, when I see a speedy player make a pass, I'm curious to see where he's going from there. I can say the same after someone on defense rushes up to the point to contest a shot. It's all about choosing a little moment like that and seeing what that player does with the rest of his shift; at least, that's just one way I find myself appreciating the sport more. As an Aussie rules fan I like the fact that the game is always in motion for the most part Ice Hockey Is very similar any sport where the ball or puck in this case is in dispute is always more interesting Tracking the puck can be difficult but looking a pass ahead has helped me get a grip on it the more I watch the better I'll get The next part is to pick a team I've always liked the Colarado Avalanche so as of the end of this sentence I declare myself an Avs fan for life and will invest in a jersey If you really love hockey I encourage you to check out the AFL there are some similarities in the way the play progresses

I like catching glimpses of the benches both during play and breaks. For instance when David Ayres took over as emergency goalie during a Leaf game the Canes bench was full of players laughing-then the coach chewed them out for it and I knew seeing those two combinations that the Canes were going to win the game. The Leafs had no chance at that point-I totally disagreed with Kelly Rhudey when he said the Leafs were going to win.

I love the sport of hockey watching the NHL since the 90's when I was a young boy but as an adult the only thing I would change is that NHL needs to go back to the 1 vs 8 match-ups the Playoff format that the NHL have now I still don't understand it and as a die hard New York sports fan of the Tri-State Area, in the New York metro area I have 3 hometown teams to watch Rangers, Islanders, Devils that I enjoy on MSG Networks and yes I watch all 3 teams

I’m new to watching hockey, I enjoy how fast paced it is and how physical. I don’t really understand face-offs and those rules. How come the ref sometimes will fake drop it and then a player has to leave and a new player joins the face off? If you flinch is that like being disqualified from taking the face-off?

Great question. I welcome responses from anyone who has played hockey (I haven't), but I can also weigh in. I think refs can suck the momentum out of a game when they try to get someone to cheat in the circle or toss them. These players wear pounds of gear and skate miles each game, so why not just drop the puck and let 'em duel it out?

The majority of the best faceoff winners in the NHL cheat at it. Sometimes it's foot position and others it is stick position. The refs will fake drop the puck with every intention to drop it but didn't like something they saw. It is very annoying because the faceoff rules are super strict and would be better if they just allowed more leeway than what is happening currently. There is a new rule implemented lately where if a ref throws out a player, it is due to cheating but if the second player is also thrown out for cheating, it is a penalty. It is also a penalty if you touch the puck with your glove because too many players who fall down on faceoffs and just move the puck back to a teammate with their gloves.

I think people should try to recognize what kind of shots are being taken. Like, if the shot was purposely shot off the boards, for a deflection to the other side. Is the player shooting for a freeze in play, is the player shooting to get a deflection off a certain pad and freeze the goalie, so his teammate has an open net shot.

KZbin was so primitive back then, so I was surprised to see someone putting together a game-by-game analysis for a hockey team - and with so much character. If you’re going to your first game, sit in the nosebleeds. You’ll be able to see the puck easier than you would if you were sitting in the lower bowl. When you sit in the lower bowl, you’ll see the speed of the game easier, but depending on where you are, you might not be able to track the puck easier.

5:36 referees do not call icings, that is a responsibility of the linesmen. Referees only put their arms up during play to signal penalties

I am from the UK and I’ve been watching all of the big American sports lately and hockey is the one I’ve been struggling to watch the most. I think it’s because of how chaotic it is with how quick players move and the puck being hard to see. I am also not a fan of the NHL app. It’s poorly laid out and there is no app for Apple TV so I have to stream from my phone if I want to watch it on my TV.

In the early 2000’s they tested out a CGI trail that changed color depending on the speed of the puck. It didn’t last too long due to it being distracting. The puck idea could be a good idea though

If you buy NHL package, you can watch games on replay without knowing the score. That's what my brethren do in Scotland. Instead of watching at 3 AM, they watch it in the morning after the games ended or in the evening after work/ school.
