Hey guys I'll make a part 2 soon, so let me know what to include! Also which hit do you think was the dirtiest? (I didn’t include the Todd Bertuzzi sucker punch because this video was only of dirty body checks)

Its really good but can you do a video based on Matt Cookes dirty hits?
Kevin Stull Жыл бұрын
I can't remember the year this game took place, but it was between the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Dallas Stars and one of the Stars players made a nasty hit on Teemu Selanne that knocked him out of the game. Then, all hell broke loose during that game.
Cryonic Crusader Жыл бұрын
Dirtiest? Hard to say with all the head shots - it's close between Torres on Hossa and Cooke on Savard. In terms of ones you should include in part 2: Trevor Gillies's head shot and punches on Eric Tangradi, Trevor Gillies' jumping Cal Clutterbuck, Gary Suter's cross check to the face of Paul Kariya (I remember that in Nagano, he got booed every time he touched the puck for that because the Japanese fans wanted to see Paul Kariya play), Ulf Samuelsson's knee on Cam Neely, Brad Marchand low-bridging Sami Salo, Vaclav Varada's boarding of Krys Kolanos, Todd Bertuzzi on Steve Moore... those are all the ones I can think of right now. Well, and umpteen more knee-on-knee hits by Marchment and Cooke.

As a rugby fan and former player, we put so much emphasis on head contact in our sport nowadays, some of these hits make us look like school kids in a slapping contest.
Krehlmar9 ай бұрын
It's why I really respect rugby, they always tout not being football(soccer) and they're very physical but they also respect the game. Hockey nowdays is much better, especially in the EU, but most people don't understand how much damage that much of mass (the player) tackling a head can do. It's like two cars crashing at 30kmh, might seem slow but it basically becomes a 60kmh crash into a wall.

Yes and rightly so. Some people still don't realise how bad head injuries are.

The Rome/Horton hit was clean, should have been watching what was in front of him and not admiring his pass.
Punk Floyd21 күн бұрын
@Cory Garfield it was a bit late, but it wasn't dirty on the same level as these other cheap shots. For the editor to put it into the same category is an insult and shows pure ignorance about hockey and the situation. There is a world of difference between hitting someone slightly late versus deliberately trying to injure like most of these other clips.
John Schauder3 ай бұрын
A lot of the older ones were legal at the time…like Scott Stevens on Paul kariya and his one on Eric Lindros. Up until 2010 it was legal to target the head. The only reason some of those hits were because of boarderline elbowing, charging, interference, hit from behind, boarding or leaving the feet. As long as you stayed low and kept your elbow tucked in, you could blindside someone’s head with your shoulder KO them with no call. There were also way more fights and line brawls. Shit used to be crazy in the nhl
DevilzFan3 ай бұрын
Yup. Stevens hits were legal hits at the time. They would not fly in today's NHL, but completely legal hits then.

@Hugh Janus you must watch hockey strictly for the violence... When there's no skill, when you are a violent player because you have no skills, that shit shouldn't be allowed in game. It's selfish, make a career out of ending others careers. Pitiful. I like hockey for everything else, aside from the unnecessary, illegal violence. It literally is assault. Violence that is within the guidelines is cool with me, but some players really need a reality check, they think they can get away with anything.

The hit also cost the Islanders as they lost their best player, next playoff round, and super star player for multiple years. to be fair, that's not why his numbers went down so much, as the leagues scoring was an all time high in 93 and it went down every year after that, the 98-04 seasons had the lowest scoring ever. Guys with UNDER 80 POINTS were top 10 in 2004. Thats why guys like Sundin Iginla Alfredsson and Datsyuk don't have more career points, and especially Jagr. Jagr had 3 seasons in the KHL after the rangers, plus the 04 05 season, you take those into account and the era he played in? His adjusted points compared to say, Gretzky's prime era, would be likely about 2500 career points. Far from Wayne but, much more than everyone else.

Scott Stevens hit on Lindros was absolutely a dirty hit. Stevens went right for the head, as he had done throughout his career many times. . Stevens could have still put on a good clean hit, but he chose to target the head on a vulnerable player. Lindros could have avoided the head contact if he had his head up and seen it coming though.

15:10 the infamous Scott Steven hit on Kariya is a tough one to call. I would agree with the commentator - "guys, that's interference." the puck was gone, and while Steven *was* in the act of throwing a hit, he could and should have aborted the hit, which would have led to a sort of awkward collision sort of hit, but not an absolute plow through. then again i realize that, at live speed, it's hard for Stevens to change his mind in a millisecond. Still, I think he could have laid off at the last second, which would have avoided the concussion to Paul Kariya (it is very much in the NHL's interest to protect their skill players, the guys who sell tickets)

As an ice hockey player since 1968 on the organized and unorganized level I can categorically state that intentionally hitting an opposing player from behind and to the head is unethical, unfair and an extremely dangerous action. It is really the equivalent of attacking somebody from behind with a weapon. This comes from years of my own hockey player experience on the ice. Being hacked, hit, hooked, slashed and speared from behind is not fun nor safe and can be painfully crippling! Watching these ice hockey highlights of impulsive overaggressive unlawful physical contact makes one grimace!

Can tell the difference between who’s trying to finish their check and make a nice big clean hit and who’s actively making a conscious decision to hurt someone…those are the ones that make my stomach turn

I think you could argue every hit comes with the intention to hurt. Not severely in every case but definitely cause some damage

So most of these are absolutely dirty hits. It pretty much comes down to where and how they're hit.

There are several dirty hits here. However, back in the 1970's & 1980's this was common - as were fights. I remember when most players didn't even wear helmets. Many goalies didn't wear masks! Take a look at some older NHL footage and you will see violence on another level.

I've watched and played hockey for years. I love the sport. With that said...there is absolutely no place in the game for a dirty hit. The rule should be changed. If a player misses games due to a dirty hit...the b***h that caused the injury shall miss the same amount of time. Keep the game fast, competitive, physical and clean.

I'm 27 and just recently got into hockey. As a someone who loves physical sports, I would of loved to play hockey growing up. I wouldn't love getting hit anything similar to people in these videos
Dane Жыл бұрын
@Erik L yes hockey is the best sport!! Unfortunately though if you played as a kid you would deal with MANY dirty players. That's how i broke my collar bone when i was 15, the hit was so late that the ref didn't even see (puck was down in other teams end and i was still in my own defensive zone, i had passed the puck up ice). Incidents/injuries like this made local leagues here in Canada raise the age for hitting. Because of stupid people. Some young teens just play to hit, instead of playing good hockey and taking opportunities when they come, and knowing when to back off. It really always comes down to the player though in my opinion, raising the age made no difference. In fact i think it might have made it worse since teenagers were mad they had to wait longer to hit, and then they would hit even more dirty. But yea hockey is awesome and i still played after the break but i absolutely cannot stand dirty players! No player making an NHL salary should ever make dirty hits like the ones in this video, they should be banned and have their contracts terminated
turnerjazz Жыл бұрын
@Dane My son's been playing 5 years now and the single biggest problem is refs who won't call the dirty hits and leagues that won't enforce any real discipline. When kids figure out they can elbow kids in the head right in front of the ref and not even get a penalty, they learn to be dirty.

Stevens’ hit on Kariya was suspension-worthy. Very late hit, targeting the head. On top of that, shoulder pads at that time were built more like football pads - it’s a wonder Kariya stayed in the game.

Charles Richardson Жыл бұрын
@juhos3000 it's natural for people to dip their head right before impact, you see it in football all the time so yeah, it happens quick. Hit somebody in the head doesn't make it dirty, it's the intention behind the hit.
David Bartz Жыл бұрын
The difficult part is that so many people extend their legs through the hit which means if the timing is off then you're taking the guy's head off even if you didn't intend to.

If you aim at their head on purpose, it's a dirty hit. Period.

This is brutal stuff, I love it! Being an Aussie I don’t know the rules regarding what is legal and illegal when taking out your opponent
WhatsY0UTUB3 Жыл бұрын
in the current era any contact with the opponents head while you are hitting them in illegal. a lot of the older clips from an older era did not have this rule. scott stevens is a good example - the hit at 15:05 was considered clean when he did it. nowadays he'd be suspended 20 games probably
Richard Hahn4 ай бұрын
Scott Stevens literally got away with murder, especially against Lindross, he concussed him multiple times, and he never actually hit him with his shoulder. It was the elbow/forearm every time. He singlehandedly shortened his career.

I am not an NHL official, but a few of these clips look like clean hits. I saw a solid hip check and an open ice hit leading with the shoulder that connected with a puck carrier who had their head down. I followed hockey more in the 90s than I do today, but a few of these hits don’t look dirty to me. That isn’t to say that I’m today’s NHL they may not be illegal.

Thank you for the compilation. I appreciate clean hits, but detest dirty cheap shots that is intentionally trying to hurt players. These abusers do not belong in the game of hockey. After one incident, these abusers cannot be allowed to cause any more incidents and if they do then ban them from hockey. 3 dirty players stand out; Matt Cooke, Scott Stevens and Brad Marchand. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Zach Hamm Жыл бұрын
Exactly - Separate the man from the puck. If the separation results in big clean hit, great. But TRYING to hurt players, suspensions generally aren't long enough.

Lindros is my favorite player so this is tough to admit but based on the rules at the time Steven's was clean (at then time) Imo Matt Cooke and Dale Hunter are the dirtiest players to play the game. They both had some talent though (Hunter had a lot, Cooke could have been okay but choose to be a goon).

And with Scott Stevens, there are people that still look up to him as a hitter.
anlacombe7 ай бұрын
Some players are definitely cheapshot artists, but generally how dirty a hit is depends on who gets hit and who does the hitting, a star player will usually get the benefit of the doubt while the other player gets blamed for a dirty hit or not keeping their head up on the ice. Teams matter too, for example, maple leafs announcers were always ready to say a habs player was dirty, but put that same player in a leafs jersey and suddenly they became a tough gritty player who plays hard, the maple leafs announcers were no worse than other teams announcers its just an example

Players who do this crap should be criminally charged. Why they get away with it is beyond me, and the fact that they do is evidence of corruption.
