from a young child thought how sad is this song?Why do adults sing it? I read the pome's to someone today and told him, I said this pome could kill someone if not in the right frame of mind?, He agreed, said: " do you realize most people don't know that it's a Scottish poem? Written in 1788 by Robert Burns?" (I had just learned it myself from reading it I never knew )"Than later set to the music of a folk song.Translated into English not everyone loves poetry, like us" I'm grateful they found you, K It Finally hit me, today while reading it with a tear in my eye what it means. This is what I came up with and why its lasted 200 years (damn pome song always make me tear up or cry no matter what time of year it is) It's about connecting with others. The kind that binds you to someone forever, loyalty, friendship, kindness, love; Even though that person might not be with you anymore. It's about the human spirit's ability to hope for the future while enduring rough times by remembering these precious human attributes. Each year sees many suffer from both naturally created and man-made hardships. But with each there were others willing to step in an attempt to relieve some of that hardship, exercising the best of the human spirit. So even as a child I knew it was sad it doesn't just have to be played read on New Years Eve I bide you all hopefully a great 2018 good by 2017 I wont miss u lol

I don't think the verse or the song is sad at all. Nostalgic, maybe, but that is a world away from sad. Sad would be if the song were about someone who had died, but it is not about that. It is about old friends and remembering the times shared together. At a deeper level, it is about not forgetting your roots or the people you met along the way in this journey we call life.
@claired6328

It's very traditional, Originally if this song is on all friends & strangers join in a circle with crossed linked hands & dance inwards & out, this isn't a very good version on the song as the original is much faster & upbeat, its traditionally played on Hogmanay, Weddings etc

This is incorrect. the pronuniciation is wrong and original should be "joe" not "dear". I'm a distant relative of Rabbie Burns (Robert) and although I don't live in Scotland...can tell you this is wrong. I could go through the whole thing but I think you can find a better reference on ...if they pronounce 'tak" like "tack" you probably have found the right pronuniciation. gotta run...
@richardwarren8138

Jo, not "joe." One is a name, the other a term of endearment in language of the Scots.

It's a Scottish song not English. England is not the same as Scotland it's a separate country, the UK is a collection of 4 countries with in a union. It came about through the union of the Scottish and English crowns as the English king died with out a next in line. So please don't refer to Scotland as England as we have a much more independent a proud history and culture that dates back to the celts and before the Romans

I don't know about that part of Scotland being a "country" before England was. Perhaps the name "Scotland" was used to describe the "country" in the northern part of the island before the name "England" was used to describe the "country" in the southern part. Even that is questionable, as, in both parts, the "country" was made up of several tribal groups that, more or less, formed alliances against foreign enemies. By the time those groups joined together under one "king" and formed a true kingdom, the "country" in the southern part was already known as "England" (named for one of the Danish groups that invaded that part of the island). At any rate, England did not buy Scotland. The two kingdoms merged into a "United Kingdom" under a single monarch.
@DylanGames1000
@DylanGames1000 6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a country and it's called imperialism. They didn't have to "buy" them. Fucks sake the United Kingdom's capitol is in god damn London, ENGLAND! Scottish like to say they're their own independent country but... they're not. Neither is Australia.

The song is "traditional" in the sense that its origins are unknown, in the nature of a folk song. Robert Burns' role was to write down the words to the song after hearing it sung - and probably add some words of his own. And no one said it was "old English." That is a description of an obsolete form of the English language. The language of the verse of this song is clearly a mixture of ordinary English and the Scottish dialect of English. Arguably, some of that Scottish dialect is Celtic in origin, but, even if that is so, from a linguistic perspective, the verse is predominantly English. You are aware, I assume, that the video was produced by a linguistic website that purports to teach the English language. Whether the song has ethnic or nationalistic ties to Scotland is irrelevant to the language in which it is written.
