In lesson 16 we revise the Present tense (Things that are happening now) and I also introduce the word Mynd (To go/Going), which is a very useful word. We use Mynd to make lots of sentences and questions about places we are going to. For example, going to the shops, going to see friends, or my favourite, going to the pub for a pint or two, or three, or four... 😀

Helo. I'm learning Welsh (being a Breton helps a lot because of so many common words, and same mutations...:-) ). I love the Northern Welsh (which unfortunately seems rather rare on learning website). But listening to this video I have a question : I never heard "wy" (wyt ti) pronounced "oy" (as in Boy). Is it a Northern way of saying, and if so, is it a "global" Northern way or is it proper to a certain part of North Wales ? Another question : I really love sounds as the very aspired H (as in "Rho i mi...) and the "dark L" (as in "Cwsg nes gweld ein gilydd eto..." in Sul y blodau song) : are they more Northern Welsh sounds than Southern ? Diolch yn fawr

In North Wales wy is pronounced “oo” not “oy” as in South Wales. In Gwynedd it’s dach and dan. In Flintshire it’s dech and den.

OK, but I'm a bit lost : you say "oy" is a South Wales prononcing, but where I heard it was in a lesson of yours, whose titled specified "North Wales" beween parentesis, so 'm a bit lost; as I said. The reason why I chosed to listen to you was those parentesis "Northern Wales", but this "oy" seems to indicate that it's Souotnern, in fact. Afterwards, I saw in your bio, on the 2 websites you link us to, that you are from South Wales, which of course I totally respect ! :-) but : where go to, on websites, to find Welsh lessons based on Northern Welsh ? It seems ery hard to find !...) :-) Thanks a lot, diolch yn fawr.

The sentence "wyt ti'n mynd allan" in North Wales is translated to "are you going out". "You are going out" translated into North Welsh is "ti yn mynd allan".

The standard form taught in North Wales course books such as Mynediad is ‘Rwyt ti’n mynd allan’ (You are going out). So its best I stick with that for now. I’m from south Wales so we always drop the R off of Rwyt ti for the question and answer form. I won’t do that for the answer form next time if thats wrong for North Wales.

@@LearnWelshPodcast your videos are really good and informative. I did confirm what I previously posted with a north Welsh speaker before posting. Could it only be a north west dialect? Some more feedback from other noth Wales speakers would be appreciated. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I’m glad you enjoy the videos. The version of the sentence you suggested seems like more of an emphasised form of the sentence to me. ‘YOU are going out’ whereas the one I taught was more neutral. But hopefully we’ll hear from some other North Wales Welsh speakers to see if it is a specific form, dialect or if it is in standard use up North.
