Learn With Me - Hydrasynth: Ep08 - Envelopes Part 1

Having experimented with the filters, we move onto the envelopes, in particular we look at all the features they offer and experiment a little with the times and curvature.
In this series of videos you'll join me as I learn the ins and outs of the ASM Hydrasynth (Explorer). I've had it for about one month and used it to a limited degree alongside reading the manual. I'll demonstrate my end to end learning and exploration process starting with the basics of how to use the synth, through all the features, and ending with some sound design demonstrations.

I would love to see you explore the mixer module in depth- it's an easy module to overlook, but the Hydra mixer is not quite as straightforward as any other synth I've had my hands on. Often, I'll attempt to deconstruct a factory preset that I enjoy playing, only to find that the oscillators are all at zero in the mixer, the mutants are at default values, and the ring mod and noise don't appear to be the source either. This has perplexed me ever since I started using the Hydrasynth.

Thanks for your comment, and for watching. I didn't have a dedicated video on the mixer, but I intend to cover it as part of the general sound design examples. Where the mixer is all set to zero, it usually means that envelopes are modulating the mixer level in the mod matrix (or via a macro control set to a non zero level). I think I did this in "mutants part 3", though I probably rushed through it as I hadn't introduced the mod matrix yet.

I'm open to any type of video really; what I'd like is to get some degree of community input to guide the content I make, so this type of comment is very helpful. All my videos are one take, realtime so you can definitely (in theory) follow along with my process, but that's not my intent, so much as to demonstrate a general process of how the elements of the synth fit together. The latter episodes are going to be sound design demonstrations meaning meaning more context on why I'm doing what I'm doing, which probably means easier to follow along on your own synth. As well as that, I'm open to things like live streams or other more interactive approaches to designing sounds and making music. If you have any requests or more specific thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again, and I appreciate your support.

I really think I prefer the placement of the filter, resonance, drive knobs on the explorer and desktop versions Seems more comfortable for performing I have the 49 key og It's way up in the right corner

Thanks for watching, and for the comment. I feel like the Hydrasynths have something of an identity crisis. They want to be a live player's synth, but also a sound designer's synth. I find myself thinking that the whole range is good, but with a stronger commitment to a certain user base, they could have been great. Little UI/UX quirks and seemingly strange compromises leave me frustrated at times. I had considered the original version when it was launched but it wasn't a good fit for my setup so the explorer works nicely, but I'm using it for sound design where the 8 encoders on the desktop made more sense, but I couldn't imagine myself getting a Hydrasynth without the poly aftertouch keyboard. The pads are okay, but poly aftertouch grid controllers are easier to get hold of anyway.
