I call the partially funded True Expense the "YNAB discount". If I have $200 saved in car repairs, but I have a $600 repair...it only cost me $400 with the YNAB discount! Ideally I get them all funded, but this stops me from beating myself up too much if life happens.

Rule 5: keep it simple enough so that you don't mind keeping the system up to date. If you're lazy, it's not gonna last if you fixate on scrutinizing every single bill to extract 100 different categories.

I get why all your videos are targeted at people who are stressed out by a lack of money and thereby take that tone. But given that savings are at an all time high (for a very fortunate percentage of the population) it would be good to get a video on incentizing budgeting when your account is looking healthy. I can't get my sister to stay budgeting for an (inevitably) scarcer future cause right now she has a years worth of savings from the pandemic. She doesn't see the point.

Thanks Ben for the engaging way you touch on the frustration most people feel when (not) managing their money. I would say the bulk of videos and books on the subjects have a very daunting learning curve that cause lay folk to simply walk away, the situation unresolved. I will give this a try...

How do you get a month ahead?
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, good question! Each of the three rules has a part to play: Rule 1 allows you to make a plan before you spend, giving you a clear sense of what you want/need your money to do. This alone helped me immensely with getting ahead because I had clear expectations about what I could spend. Rule 2 helps you save for those non-monthly expenses, so you don't get set back when AAA comes due or your car breaks down. And Rule 3 helps you to maintain flexibility within your budget without going into debt and adjust your categories to be more realistic for your lifestyle. If you want to learn more about getting a month ahead, we have a free workshop called "Breaking the Paycheck to Paycheck Cycle" that goes into detail and allows you to ask more specific questions. You can find that here: www.youneedabudget.com/free-workshops/ Hope that helps! :) - Ben M

Thanks for the video. I have a question, despite everything, when creating a budget in YBAN, I do it for a specific month - it's so convenient for me. Am I able to somehow plan the expense, e.g. in 3 months, so as not to forget about it? But I would not like to use the money that I currently have for this, but only those that will appear in the month when I will have to spend it for this specific purpose.
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mariusz! Yes, while we recommend only budgeting the dollars you actually have, we definitely don't want you to forget about future expenses (especially those pesky true expenses!). You can plan ahead for those future expenses by creating goals on all your categories in YNAB. You can learn more about how to do that in the Set Up Your YNAB Budget video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5-Zfqp5nrx4hbs Hope that helps! :) - Ben M

What if you budget but you still swipe your card? since your 'budget' is just a arbitrary aim and not really a transfer of accounts from checking to saving or paying future bills but the money just sit in there and you have the debit card with you?
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
If you have linked your debit card, then that transaction will import into YNAB once it clears your bank (if you haven't linked it, you can put the transaction into YNAB yourself). Your budget will update with that information, so that you can see how much money you still have set aside for that category. If you overspend, you just follow Rule 3. Hope that helps! 🙂 - Ben M

Yes and no, during the great recession, fiscally responsible people were the main reason why more didn't go under. Where do you think the money that banks and credit card companies lend comes from? It's mostly money that's on loan from those that aren't spending every cent that comes their way as soon as it gets there. Sure, the profits mostly come from interest and fees, most of which is coming from the irresponsible, but the actual money that they lend comes from people depositing it rather than spending it.
