Moon is symbolized in Chinese culture. You can find the moon in many Chinese pieces of literature referring to 'hometown' or 'family members' or 'beloved ones'.

However, he is using fake Chinese not real Chinese. Mandarin is a barbarian language, that just can use some part of Chinese words, like Vietnamese, Korean, both can use some part of Chinese word. The ccp and Taiwan never use the real Chinese language to teach students.

@@fishwong2309 It's realy an odd saying. Chinese language is constantly developing, their is not such a "real Chinese language" in the world. In addition, Chinese characters are still used nowaday, which means that antient Chinese literary can still be read nowadays. That's enough to prove that Mandarin connects with traditional Chinese language, which may equals to "true Chinese language" as you say.

I learned the poem in ancient Chinese class when I was a high school student. Here in Japan, ancient Chinese is a compulsory subject in high schools. Japanese people learn ancient Chinese as a part of Japanese language because Japanese writing system was greatly affected by ancient Chinese.

Amazing! Is Modern Chinese a compulsory subject, too? In Spain, Latin is an optional subject that can be studied if chosen. It should be compulsory in most schools as it is the language which Spanish comes from. Nevertheless, it is considered obsolete and it is sometimes frowned upon...

@@kennethwong8843 Yeah, but as others have pointed out it is kinda true, it's just true for all languages. Try as it might, a language with very few noun declensions will never capture the feel of poetry in a language with many declensions like Latin. You might convey the meaning, you might even translate it into poetry of a type common in English, but you'll never get the exact spirit of the original text because the languages work so differently that you really can't draw exact parallels. However, you are exactly right that this can become problematic. Keeping with my latin example, educated English speakers forced latin grammar rules on a language that was originally of Germanic origin, and your ability to understand those rules were major class indicators with a lot of racial bias thrown in for flavor. I'm not familiar with Chinese ethnocentrism, being that I am from the west, however I have seen it do enough harm here that I'm very glad you pointed it out. We must remember that every culture is equally valid and beautiful, but also that these things can only be fully appreciated in their proper contexts.

Impressive! Actually reading poems is much more difficult than reading modern articles. This one is the first poem that kids learn in primary school, so it does not require knowledge of chinese history. But in many others, you have to master many history facts and cultural concepts to understand them, which is quite difficult even for many chinese. In ancient china dynasty, the highly ranked officials are elected from writing examinations: writing poems or explaining the meaning of sentences written by Confucius and their students.

It's a very special poem. Li Bai uses the moonlight to direct his attention - the light is the director of the scene. He follows the light and where does it lead? From the foot of his bed [INSIDE] to his window [OUTSIDE] to the shimmering frost on the ground - then [UP] to the light of the full moon. Here, Li Bai goes [IN] again, but this time it is deep [WITHIN] himself. As the moon is the same everywhere, he could just as well be home. He comes to his senses and realizes, sadly, that he is NOT home where he longs to be -- thus, he "bows his head". Such a simple gesture for such a deep emotion.

Because of his loneliness far away from his home town, his heart felt cold (lonely) therefore seeing a illusion of morning frost on the ground mirage by the moonlight or Maybe it's hinting the time during the autumn (probably Autumn Moon Festival is approaching) whereby frosting on the ground or grass occurs every morning.

Yup, i can confirm this is also the first Chinese poem taught in Singapore Chinese education syllabus. Can't remember whether it taught during Primary or Secondary. this may be the ONLY Chinese poem that most of us can remember after gradating..unless you are those straight A students or Scholar or new citizen from china. i doubt any of us can quote any other chinese poems.

The poem is profound and the meaning apparent but to write a 4 pages long essay on this sounds like cooks on their blogs describing in 8 pages the richness of an avocado on toast. 😂

this is a very straight forward poem which is about somebody thinking his distant village from his bed in front of the window at night. It does not need a 4 pages essay to disect it.

Oh my god, no wonder that poem sounded so familiar when you read it. We also studied that poem in Vietnam. It goes by the name "Tĩnh dạ tứ" here. Textbooks had 3 versions: original, literal translation and poetic translation. I always hated studying classical poetry, since I couldn't understand the original.

Its a beautiful poem .i can see the moonlight on the window sill of an abandoned house that was near my farm where i grew up. Each full moon especially in the frosty winter month it brings me back to that window sill. If i went there to see it on a cold winter night the ghosts would be with me. Better to ventere there in my mind safe and the illusion is there forever.
