We need more of this kind of stuff! There is so much out there, and tons of resources for learning it all, but there seems to be very little in the way of illustrating the broader picture and tying it all together. I would LOVE to see a series that covers both the front-end and back-end development and deployment of a basic web application using some of these tools and frameworks so we can see first-hand how it all works together. I've yet to find anything like that though.

Just learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, some basic terminal commands, a Distributed Version Control System (Git, Mercurial, SVN, etc), Meteor, MongoDB and maybe ReactJs and a CSS frontend framework (Bootstrap, Materialize, Material UI, etc). That will be much more than enough to become a web developer! and more importantly you will be able to develop a full featured web application like in no time!! stuff like testing, protocols, web platforms, server management, etc come after! That's my humble suggestion. I watched this video the last year and tried to follow the recommended path (having already experience in frontend technologies and relational database management) but I felt it was literally too much! there are some steps that are unnecessary or are not a concern for a beginner! But thanks for the video anyway... Of course this is also a matter of choice, I have chosen the above stack!

+Andrés Alejandro García Hurtado Roughly how long do you think it would take to learn those technologies, and would it be okay to substitute Angular for Meteor?
@andresalejandrogarciahurta5856
@andresalejandrogarciahurta5856 9 жыл бұрын
+Rashawn Jacobs It might take you from three to five months to understand and get used to them, and the rest is just a whole lot of practice. Meteor is actually a platform (client + server + database + other things) to develop web and hybrid mobile applications written in pure Javascript. That being said, you can detach the default javascript front-end framework (Blaze) and use any other you want (as long as you are able to integrate it with the Meteor ecosystem or use an existing package to do so). Meteor currently supports natively three different javascript front-end frameworks, Blaze (default), Angular and React. So technically, you cannot substitute Angular for Meteor, you can actually use Angular with Meteor.

+Andrés Alejandro García Hurtado I've learned HTML, PHP, CSS, MySQL, basic JS, jQuery, Wireframes and CMS's like Bootstrap, WordPress, Web hosting and quite a lot of theory and history behind the web development, all in my first ~8 months of my bachelor. Currently working on learning JavaScript fully, but the language is shite. Utter rubbish imho. It is God, and I am the lonely ant on the other side of the magnifying glass. So. Tired. Of. JavaScript. Until I realized I've only just started 2 weeks ago on learning JS.

Thank for your great advice! With the skill you said is enough to be front-end or full-stack web developer? Because meteor is full stack framework. What if i replace meteor with nodejs, is it ok?

I started learning web designing half a year ago. Then I was caught up in coding, so I thought front-end development would be fun, so I digged more about Javascript and Jquery. It's never easy for me to move from designing background to web development. Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed because there are so many things to learn and I have no idea where to start or what I really need to learn. Now I find your video and it helps me see a clearer and bigger picture of web development, it also freaks me out lol.

I am a web developer for one of the largest tax and accounting software firms in the world and I can say that this video is spot on. And for anyone wondering, yes you have to learn a unit test frameworks! I would recommend everyone learn karma and jasmine. Things like Grunt, Bower, Node are necessities. Every good web developer knows these tools. And for server side stuff, I would learn .Net (Asp.Net Web API 2.0 framework) or Java (Tomcat)... possibly with Python's Django. Micro service architectures exposed through REST API's are the future!!! Great video!

It's great that you've put all of the necessary tools needed for a web developer right now, but it would be cool if you could kind of give an idea of what it means to have actually mastered a certain tool. For example, I'm sure most of us can say we know CSS3 very well, but what would make someone an EXPERT at CSS and a valuable resource to a potential employee? If we are at the point where we are creating variables and our own mixins and using SASS functions and loops? Or is there a deeper layer than that. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great videos, I love your channel!

Ethan Peyton Haha, I hear you...no need to memorize the map here, just consult with it from time to time as you're knocking stuff out. At the end of the day, it's much simpler than all the detail I needed to include... If you went frontend, you'd really learn say HTML+CSS+JS+Angular and tooling around that stack. If you went backend, you'd learn say HTML+CSS+JS+Ruby on Rails and tooling around that stack. Not as daunting when you think of it like that.

Thank you very much for this video. I was very excited to see this updated, as your 2014 mind map has served for my learning curriculum in front-end development. Question posed to anyone interested in answering: I have built two personal projects using Angular's controllers, custom directives, services (utilizing $q for JSON encoded by PHP from a MySQL database). I understand first-class functions in JS, as well as closures and basic functional programming. With basic AngularJS skills on my resume, I have recruiters contacting me about jobs that do not contain 'junior' at the beginning. I then tell them that I consider myself more of a junior-level candidate, and then I never hear back. (I am trying to switch from a career in academic research.) When I have the basics of all of the front-end stuff down, should I limit myself to only junior-level roles? (I need to learn SSH, unit testing still)

+Francois van der Merwe Thanks! I think at this point, the biggest things I'd emphasize: - React + Redux is an awesome frontend framework combo - Webpack is the build system to choose these days (you often just need npm scripts + webpack, no grunt/gulp, too) - Docker is a must-start-learning for backend/devops personnel - Tutum & Rancher are great docker UI's - GoLang is picking up steam everywhere I notice and is great for microservices as is Node.js

So if you go frontend, you'd learn say HTML+CSS+JS+Angular and tools around that stack. If you go backend, you'd learn say HTML+CSS+JS+Ruby on Rails and tools around that stack. Not quite as bad if you think of it that way.

I'm not going to lie.. if you know a little bit from everything you just explained on this video, you're a god. If I don't use it every day, I'll forget about it. lol idk if it's the same for everyone else, but I can say I've fiddled with everything in this video, but only a master in HTML, CSS, Jquery, Node, PHP and that's it.

Great video. As a graphic designer with basic front end knowledge looking at ways to further develop my career, front-end dev is definitely something that interests me. It is great to see such a clear breakdown of key skills/frameworks/languages that I need to attain to achieve my career changing goal. Like others, be great to see 2016 version to help me make up my mind :-)

I started out with PHP, went to Node and now I'm on the Microsoft stack and I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd recommend staying away from ASP.NET. It makes PHP look like a child's toy, and Node like a disorganized mess. On top of that, ASP.NET comes with its own client side packaging implementation that's way easier to grasp than AMD ever was. My advice is, look at what jobs in your area are looking for. I live in Seattle so ignoring ASP.NET is pretty stupid, especially since with a bit of knowledge and confidence you will find a job here with no issues whatsoever.

For anyone who is new to web development, I've been developing since I got my very first computer.. and even watching this now (after 12 years of development) I still think it's a LOT. But after you start to play with one, the next one will become easier. After I learned PHP, everything else became easier (except javascript/jquery lol). it's not bad if you really love it. I've always told people who ask me about development.. you have to love it. If you don't love it, you wont learn anything.

Great Vid LearnCode.academy!! Thank you so much for putting this up. Could you also give an insight in who is an Interaction designer vs User Experience Designer vs UI Designer vs Web Designer. Which role is more analytical and problem solving vs being more skill set savvy like lets say front end developers? Or am I missing something here. Thanks a bunch!
@learncodeacademy
@learncodeacademy 9 жыл бұрын
Archana Rao Hmm, great question. So to be honest, all of those that you mentioned are very much similar. It's really dependent on the company and what they determine that title to mean. That keyword "designer" to some companies means graphic designer, to others, it means coder. UI, User Experience, Interaction...can all mean the same thing. It's the same thing on the backend...am I a web developer, web engineer, software architect, fullstack developer? Depends on the company. It's really more about your skillset and what skillset the position needs.

You recommended to stay away from C#.NET. Would you clarify your point please ? . I am a newbie to the field , I have done some researches to decide which back end technology to start with and I chose ASP.NET MVC framework over PHP because I felt it is easier to do things right (eg : oop design and layers) and its easier to maintain in the long term.
