Hello Ganesh! First of all I would like to give you a big "Thank you" for your great videos and the lessons u are doing on KZbin...they are very useful!!! But I just came over a little "task". I just have read a Sentence in an other lesson book and I answered it wrong... Paul......(drive) to Paris five times this year. As I thought of a kind of experience thing I answered the question with "has driven" but I was wrong. According to my book the right answer is "Paul drove to Paris five times this year. And the second one is: I.......(see) Tom and Jerry just a few minutes ago. As I thought of a recent action that is just finished I answered the question with "have seen" but again I was wrong again. According to the book the right answer is "I saw Tom and Jerry just a few minutes ago" So I quite a little bit confused. Maybe you can help me getting that knot out of my head. Thank you in advance!!!
@LearnEnglishLab6 жыл бұрын
1) The problem might be that your textbook lacks context. I would say "Paul drove..." if we're in December, and the year is almost over, so he won't be driving another time. But, at any other time of year, I would say "has driven" because the time period is unfinished. 2) When you have an exact time expression, you cannot use the present perfect (I mention this in the video). So, "I saw Tom and Jerry just a few minutes ago" is correct.

Thank you for magnanimously providing us with free content having easy to understand concepts! It’s because of you that I and the other people here in the comments and who had watched your video/s, love to learn more English. I hope that you help more people in the future. Wish you all the best good sir, health, life, career and other things that are important to you. One question though, I read a book before and saw these sentences “It had been an exception to the rule that I’d gotten to take a mulligan in this bizarre world.” What kind of verb tense is that supposed to be, teacher? I’m confused. When I looked up the notes I had copied from your lessons, I didn’t find anything that could answer my question. I can’t tell if it’s in the past perfect tense when the rule says that when it has the word “had” before it, it means it happened first. How about when there are two sentences that each have “had” before them? Which comes first? And is this grammatically correct? Thank you in advance teacher! P.S. I have a hard time sleeping when I my mind is full of unanswered questions. :(
@hykhdl2 жыл бұрын
im so late but i think its past perfect continuous because of the 'had been' and 'I'd=I had gotten'. As for which came first, its the subject getting another chance (mulligan) in the world since AFTER they got the chance was the exception made.
