Reading is a fantastic way to learn or improve a language. I´m a German native speaker and ever since I began learning English as my second language in grade 3 I had so many problems with this rather simple language (and nearly failed my class because of it). But when I started reading English novels about a years ago, I read everyday up to 10 hours (I have to admit, I got a little obsessed with the English language and had a lot of free time back then) but now I´m actually the best in class. I started thinking in English and even dreaming in English. If I have use a dictionary, it´s only because I know a vocabuary, but forgot the German word for it- it´s crazy.

It's really interesting and useful. I love to know more words. I am trying it for more than 10 years. Still I am not convinced with my improvement. The main point as you have highlighted, i had focused on the meaning of words rather than understanding the context of the article. But one challenge i could see, is the continuing interest and passion for improvement in vocabulary. Some times, it gives hyper active energy and passion to read everything and other times, the mind just drains and loses energy since i am a working professional. So it gives a feel that development in this area occurs in patches and not consistent. So i decided to focus on area of interest and look for fresh and reverberating words that could kindle the curiosity. Its a long term process. But the task looks daunting and baffling. Reading daily 1 hour is an uphill task which requires patience and perseverance. The goal should be fixed with clear vision.
