Actually, in my opinion, the term 'Indian accent' is pretty much misleading. Because India has so many languages and a person's English is influenced by their respective language. This accent is predominantly seen among Hindi (or languages similar to Hindi) speaking people. People from southern India have different accents with respect to their languages. Especially Tamilar's English accent is somewhat different from this Indian accent.

One thing I can say about Deepika is that she doesn't need to change her accent because she knows how to pronounce words and give structure to a sentence. In India, she would learn English in schools alongside Hindi. That way she did not lose her accent since her classmates and teachers are also Indians. However if she were to learn a new language outside of school without a trainer, imitation may seem essential.

what they mentioned in the video was right, though. we don't say "speak yourself" in normal speech. he used that specific term bc it tied in w a theme that they were exploring personally through their music and it was a title of an era, making it grammatically correct to be used in that sentence. what he meant by "speak yourself" was definitely to express ourselves and recognize who we are as a person and to take time to sit w our thoughts.

I think Indian accent is the easiest one because we speak quite clearly. As someone already mentioned in the comments, Indian accent can be misleading term as we have many languages here. Our accent depends on our mother tongue. Our English will sound just like our native language fairly, like Hindi speaking people, Tamil speaking people, Gujarati speaking people, we all sound quite different. This difference is due to unique intonation of different languages.
@Vor567tez
@Vor567tez Жыл бұрын
How is "Indian accent" is misleading? China also has many language and that can alter the accent just like Indian's. But do we care ? USA's each state has their own accent but most of us rn't even aware of that bcs we usually can't distinguish btw them and frankly we don't even care. So we club them all as American accent. I am trying to say calling Indian accent as Indian accent is right bcs the difference can only be understood by native Indians , who are raised here but the difference can't be understood by others as they rn't familiar with language diversity. It doesn't matter if someone from Southern or Northern India speaking English in foreign country, to them it will be always Indian. As they don't see the division that we do. Just like we Indians don't care if the American is from East or West. Also "Indians hv clear accent" is absurd bcs Indians themselves are listening to the Indian accent since childhood and language that directly influence them. Thus, they will be able to understand the accent easily but it will be difficult for other countries to understand us. Just like we will hv difficulty to understand their's.

So here are my thoughts on Indian accents and Indian English. As you mentioned, communication is definitely the primary goal of any language - thick accents sometimes hinder communication. However, as we have American and Australian accents, which often use different terms for the same things and even different spellings for some words, I think Indian English should also be distinguished, similar to American English and Australian English, as India has the second-largest English-speaking population worldwide and Indians are everywhere nowadays. I know English is the second language in India, and we have different accents based on the native languages spoken here. However, there is also a somewhat neutral English that is not heavily accented but distinctly Indian - similar to what Deepika speaks.

Indian English and Indian accent are already among the 5 officially registered English accents. The other four are American, British, Paccific(Australia+New Zealand) and Nigerian. Also just like America has several dialects and regional accents like, Southern, African American, Mid-west etc. , Indian accent too change from state to state. So nowadays, it's perfectly fine to speak in Indian accent anywhere in the world. It's a clear, and crisp variant.

No one should ever change their accent I think...the main purpose of learning a new language is to be able to communicate with other people...what does accent have to do with it? One's accent tells about their nationality and origin and I think one should take pride in that. *Edit:* I was only talking about english over here. For other languages there exists only a single accent, the one which is spoken by the natives. So you obviously won't go and create your very own accent. But when it comes to English, it's spoken globally and if there already exists an accent which is spoken by so many people of your country and you have already learnt that, then what's the point in changing yourself? Ofcourse if you are learning it and you choose to speak some foreign accent from the beginning, then that's your choice.

@@myhomegwalior6095 that is a different case but when it comes to English, it is spoken globally by so many countries! So whose accent would you imitate? But yes, in the end it's a personal choice so you do you😊

Kindly don't term it as "Indian Accent" as Indian accent itself varies from region and even depends on the person as many of our accents are influenced by foreign ones as of media and most of us definitely do not speak in the "American perception" of an Indian accent .

RM was the first person to truly motivate me to improve my English skills without living abroad ! Before that, any one I know with this level of fluency is either born in an English speaking country or have studied aboard for at least one-two years! So I used to have the impression of "you will never be able to speak fluent English unless you study abroad and interact with the native speakers in their environment" RM proved me wrong and gave me a hope to look for alternative ways to improve my English.

Wanna hear how I became good at speaking English? Here's my story: 2 years ago I became a very big fan BTS, but they were Koreans I barely understood what they said so I decided to learn Korean language... after about 6 month I somehow ended up being fluent in English😂💜(My English was not at all good before I started stanning BTS). Rm learnt English watching "Friends" and I learnt English watching BTS.

The reason Deepika can speak such good english is because she is Indian. Majority of schools in India nowadays mandate english in schools, and even if some children go to a non- english medium school, children always have some kind of exposure to it. And often it's extremely difficult to survive in India without being able to speak English. Many ads, news shows, tv shows, etc are all in English. English is also becoming so popular that, many people are forgetting their own native language. And another thing is, since English is considered to be an official language of India, you can consider the "Indian Accent" as "Indian English."

English is one of the main languages in India. Kids learn English since they start going to school. We have our own kind of English just like British English or American English. English accent changes in India to each individual due to the native language he or she speaks as almost every state in India has its own language.

It maybe just his stepping stone to learn the language, because the way he delivers it and his accent, watching a sitcom is not enough to learn that. He probably went to English class to improve it like most koreans do. Oh sorry about my English I'm still learning. 😅

As an Indian, we can read and write English pretty well, given that the person has studied in English medium school, if not, even that doesn't become barrier in most people's lives because higher education after class 12th is pretty much in English unless you chose to study in your mother tongue in colleges. The issue becomes fluency and grammar. I can write well but i know there must be plenty grammar mistakes in my sentences and this happens because we read British English, watch American English, speak Indian English and 50-60% people pretty much mix every possible language they speak living India while speaking confusing themselves😂. As BTS army, i don't know if you noticed while researching or not, RM's fluency and vocabulary improvement even more after 2016, since they blew up in the west, to the point that he mostly speaks in English in major press conferences. Other members are also working on their English and have improved greatly since 2016 but need more fluency. It's huge achievement, i must say.

I personally feel that Deepika and RM's English accents are quite inspiring and amazing. Just like she explained, RM uses subtle word play and idiomatic phrases in his English even while it is not his birth language, and quite importantly is highly different from his birth language. Since I am an ARMY (a part of BTS's fandom), I have known that his English in their earlier years was not this good. Even though he knew the language from quite a young age, 8 or 9 as he mentioned I suppose, his English was still not that good. He said that his mother forcibly used to make him watch Friends (worked for him though 😂), you can see it is not only the knowledge of grammar rules and good vocabulary that makes your speaking impressive, but also the skill and will to learn it passionately and to be ready to have a scope and room for improvement. You don't master a language in a day but through consistent effort. Also, I feel the other BTS members, especially Yoongi, Hoseok and Jimin, have also improved their English quite a lot. While the first two attended English classes, Jimin has learnt it from Netflix, showing it is just your will that matters. Regarding Deepika, I feel that her sentence structure and amazing thought process to make her sentence perfect is just mesmerizing. She has an amazing confidence and the way she voices herself out is fantastic. She has this power that she can change the tone of her speech, she can make the words speak for themselves. What I mean to say is that she can be persuasive with her words like if you are in the room, she speaks like, "You have to listen to me." and you cannot ignore her when she speaks. She and RM really inspire me. I am also learning a new language - Korean. I am learning it through KZbin and Google. If you listen to people who are native speakers of the language you desire to learn, that's very helpful.
