At 8:41 my driving instructor always told me that you must indicate right when passing a parked vehicle or some other object on the side of the road; he did not do this at anytime during the test.
@JamesThompson978 жыл бұрын
Nope, you never indicate when overtaking parked vehicles; only when you're overtaking moving vehicles.
@redblade438 жыл бұрын
+James Thompson You do need to mirror, then indicate right and look over you shoulder before you "swing out to the right" from any stationary object! Look at the video at 8:41 again, the instructor should have explained this to the pupil.

The wording that should be used by instructors is " Signal if it is of benefit to others." , if the road is clear, no traffic, no pedestrian, cyclists etc etc why bother signalling at all? It just means you are taking your hand off the wheel to carry out an unnecessary action.

as opposed to crossing your arms over and tangling the shit out of yourself?
@maccas42688 жыл бұрын
If you tangle your arms when crossing them then you're doing something wrong. Crossing your arms is also a much smoother turn and if you take a tight left corner and feed the wheel then you're going into the on coming lane. It's all down to preference but I've seen first hand how feeding the wheel can cause accidents.

anyone give me a list of the things they do for the full test?? as i've heard it alot harder to get the full now?
@richardwilliams52509 жыл бұрын
It's easily available online, but as a general guide the test lasts 35-40 minutes with a maximum route length of 8-9 miles. They generally follow a pre-set route but the DVSA don't publish the routes anymore. You can probably find the old test routes for your test centre online somewhere. The test includes a mixture of roads including residential, single and dual carriageway and can involve national speed limit routes but no motorways. There's one reversing manoeuvre picked at random - turn in the road, reverse around a corner to the left, reverse (parallel) park, bay park (if the test centre has a car park) and reverse round a corner to the right (rarely tested on the car L-test but the examiner is allowed to choose it if they want to). There's also 10 minutes (approx.) of independent driving which can be either following a list of three directions (possibly with a map) or following road signs to a destination. You could get a combination of both of these (so the examiner may give you some directions and say "and then follow the road signs to ...") They'll always tell you when they are starting the independent section and when the independent section has finished. They will do three or four controlled stops where they get the candidate to park on the left and then pull away again, they'll often do these to check your normal starts as well as hill starts and angled starts (so getting you to park close to a car then pulling away from behind it). On some driving tests (picked at random) they also do an emergency stop (I think it's 1 in 3 tests). To pass you need to commit no more than 15 driver faults with no serious or dangerous faults. The test isn't easy to pass - the national pass rate is around 45%, but you will pass if you demonstrate that you're a careful, competent and safe driver.

jpcerta We have a 3 second rule of thumb thing here in the UK. So if you are stationary for more than 3 seconds (e.g. traffic lights), you apply your handbrake and flick into neutral. It's not a rule though; I avoid using the handbrake as much as possible during lessons, and I never get noted for it. I think it's more to stop people burning their clutches, especially on hills where people will happily sit in traffic with the clutch half disengaged to stop rolling back.

+kiloman3 I get mad here in the US when fat cars are parked on both sides of the road in residential streets, because it's narrow for 2 cars passing each other. Even worse when large trucks are parked on a T-intersection, because they block your view when turning.

+Little Lynkx the roads are very narrow in the UK often, so when people park you have to work your way around it. the people coming in the opposite direction can see the cars too, they ARE aware that people coming opposite them will be coming down there side.

+Little Lynkx In our highway code a parked car is seen as an obstruction therefore if a car is parked in your lane you have to give way to traffic in the opposite lane. Sadly our roads were constructed hundreds of years ago when it was only horse and carriages.

I heard that it's illegal to film driving tests...so is this a mock test? and is this learner driver an actual learner or just acting for the video?

Yes this is a mock test, he's already got a full UK driving license (it's pink), provisional driver's licenses are green. The DVSA will not allow you to record an actual test.

Excessive use of handbrake and no signal when moving into the opposite lane due to a parked car? What in the world is this, haha.

There is no requirement to use an indicator to indicate going around a stationary vehicle, it can also often be mis-intepreted or cause confusion. I've been behind a car stopped behind a parked car and indicated right, right by a turning, after the oncoming traffic flow had stopped, I was expecting her to turn right, instead she just drove round the stationary vehicle and straight on.

Okay but what if she didn't use her blinkers? You would've maybe assumed she was going to park behind this parked car? When you're using your blinkers, it indicates you're doing a move so other people expect you to do something else than just drive plain straight.

No you wouldn't... If you are following a car that is driving, and then stops behind a stationary parked car, and she can't go round it because of oncoming traffic, why on earth would I think she is parking?! Normally when people are driving and want to park, they signal left to indicate they are pulling over to park and you can go round them. If she doesn't indicate the majority of people would naturally assume (as did I) that she was waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear before going around the parked car, not that she was parking...... she didn't need to indicate, as that only caused confusion, as she happened to stop right next to a turning.
