I want to replace 2 hours a day I spend watching TV with 2 hours a day learning French, so that within 2 years I can start watching French, Swiss, Luxembourg, Belgian, Québécois and Martinique TV for 10 hours a day

Salut Cindy! I totally agree with everything you've said. I started re-learning French in October 2015 after a gap of 14 years. At the beginning, I used Duolingo and a bit of KZbin. Then I enrolled at Alliance Française the following April and did an A1 course. Due to the fact that I was very much an active learner, I had gained so much in a few months that at the end of the year, I sat for the A2 exam and passed it with flying colours. Unfortunately, since late 2016 to date I've been doing a Masters course that has taken up all my time, so I've not been actively learning French. However, I still watch French KZbin videos, listen to songs, read a lot of content everyday, I even talk to myself as much as possible (because I live in an Anglophone country, no one to talk to haha), and I've definitely made a lot of progress. I can understand a good percent of a French news bulletin, maybe up to 70%, but with subtitles I can grasp up to 95%. I still have trouble with movies, sitcoms and some songs, too much slang and they talk too quick! So I'd judge myself as maaaaybe a B2. As for future plans, I plan on returning to AF, but I'm not sure when, but most probably not this year. My dream is to live in a Francophone country for a protracted amount of time, I'm sure I'll gain loads when I'll be speaking regularly.

There are several factors in studying French . One place I discovered which successfully combines these is the Magic language method (look for it on google) definately the no.1 resource that I have ever seen. Check out all the extraordinary information .

Hey It's 6months that I have been having french classes on a daily basis in a francophone country, it's the best decision that I have ever made, I made lots of friends and trust me my French has greatly improved, in six months I have been able to attain Level B2 in French, it's truly nice I can get along with people and be able to express myself in any aspect.

Nice. But who defines fluency? A large number of native born English people would not pass any academic definition of fluency in the English language, far too many "mistakes". But they succeed in communicating. I think it was reported that 30% of native born English people would fail the exam for citizenship required of an immigrant. So as a brit expat I'd just like to say that after more than 10 years I can't keep up with fast talkers, most will slow down and use simpler terms if I apologise for not getting what they said first time. Perhaps we should think of this as interactive exchange rather than fluency (outflowing).

Merci beaucoup Cindy. Your lessons are excellent. I am relearning French after gaining an 'O'level decades ago! I can read and write at intermediate level but speak as a beginner. As for hearing French well! We live in France for some of the year and the locals are very pleasant but speak too fast. If they wrote it down then I would understand! By the way congratulations on your wonderful news and hope you stay well for the rest of the time. Salut. Mandy

Merci, Cindy! I’m moving to Paris this year and my plan is to take 4 one-hour lessons per week. I will utilize my freetime to immerse myself completely in the language. I figure I can self-study for at least 3-4 h a day, watching movies, reading books, going to museums and listening to podcasts. My hope is to reach fluency in 18 months. Bonne journée! 🇸🇪🇫🇷

Also, knowing other languages makes it easier to learn French, like Latin, because lots of words have roots in Latin. Also, some Spanish verbs also have the same form, for instance, "dormir" both in Spanish and French means the same. Also, if taking a closer look onto the matter, even English itself has lots of similarities with French, because obviously English derivates from French and German. I say this because I learned Spanish, Latin and German (not fluently, though I remember something). And Latin is a mother of almost all European languages, plus Greek. So, technically if a person knows Latin and Greek (Ancient one) - it will be easier to learn other European languages.

Im a french girl and there is a mistake that you ( english native) constantly do : using « pour » to say « thanks you for watching » or thanks you for being here because in english for can be used in different ways but in french its different you have to say merci d’avoir regarder or merci d’être venu you must use de or d’ you talk about the act of someone. I know french is really difficult, I reassure you a good part of english people does many mistakes in their own language like me here in english lmaoo By the way im looking for someone who wants to learn french/ become fluent inbecause i wants to become fluent in english too. We’ll speak together to learn !

If you're forced to learn French because of school, work, or whatever, you can also try to learn it by venting your frustration. Take it to the French internet, like discord servers, reddit subs, whatever, open deepl, or Google translate and start complaining about how bad the AZERTY layout is, how little sense it makes that French verb conjugation in the present tense serves no function when most of it is not even distinguished in pronunciation and you still need the personal pronouns to avoid ambiguity anyway, etc. It's important that you hand type the translations you get, listen to feedback when you make mistakes and you'll find that eventually you'll need to rely less and less on translation and you can go on long tirades about how you would prefer not to learn French in French without the need to look up a single word. At that point you've learned French and you've made it everyone else's problem.

Morning Cindy, I have a request for when get back to making videos. I just watched kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIrHkKGurpyShMk and love it. I would love for you to make some videos of you just telling a story or giving advice in French, using your own words at normal speed with subtitles. Personally, I'd like to hear about your struggles with speaking English, your first experiences in England using the language, maybe what you found frustrating about using a new language, some times when it felt great to be able to communicate in a 2nd language etc. I'm sure you have dozens of stories about your language endeavors. It's nice to hear these things in conversational French just like you would use if you were here telling us the story in person. It feels very authentic and genuine and yet, with the subtitles I actually learn new expressions and can look up the words I don't know. Thanks again. I'm heading to your Patreon now to make a donation as a thanks for your time. I know it is valuable! JT en Louisianne

Do you have a good grammar book and / or some self-study books you enjoy working with? I would find a set you really enjoy and like the look of, that goes from beginners to advanced, and work my way through them, making sure you understand and retain each section before moving on to the next. A good grammar book would also come in handy if the explanations in the study book don't give enough detail or if you need a quick reminder about a particular rule.
