This took me back to my childhood. My mother was nurse at a clinic next to the BMW plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria in the late 70s and early 80s. Sometime, during school holidays, I would go to work with her. My highlight was the factory visits she used to do to treat her out patients, including at BMW. You can imagine the excitement of a 10 year boy inside the factory where they made the ultimate driving machine (even if I had to stay in the car).
@FaustoZoppi Жыл бұрын
I was in the army in the mid 80s in S.A. based in Kroonstadt. We would hitch-hike back home to Cape Town when we had leave. Even sometimes just for the weekend, even though it was about 1215 km each way. One day on a Friday evening, a guy traveling from Johannesburg to Cape Town picked us up in a car just like this one. He picked us up because he was tired and needed someone to share the driving. His only stipulation to us was that we share the driving and go fast as he told us to drive to be in Cape Town for breakfast. The trip usually took around 12 hours at an average of 110 km/h with a couple of stops for fuel in those days. That trip took us around 8 hours going at about 160 km/h on average on empty roads in the middle of the night through the desert. What a thrill. Not sure we could have done it in any other car at the time.

I thought it was a GTI! I tried to pul away from him as I had some serious power....well I could not drop this guy and he stuck to me like glue! As I got to the top of the hill I gave it full gas down the other side.....before I knew it this BMW M535i flew past me like he was doing 120km/h on a parking lot! Restored ? change all fluids in it (oil, fuel, water/cooling, brakes liquid +all filters, change the gearbox oil), ball-bearings +joints, check brakes pads + rotors, fresh tires on both sets of rims, check exhaust to not be rotten, wash-it, vacuum & clean inside-out and simply drive it just like that, patina on it is perfection, really.. if this time capsule would be mine no need for fresh paint to worry about paint scratches, chips & dents, this would be it..

Great episode, something about this one really represents how cars used to be appreciated a lot more in the past, for many they were big parts of our lives and families in an emotional way, they had their good days and their bad days the same way people do and you got from them what you put in. Modern cars are more like tools than anything else, soulless and disposable. Technology has moved on and they are better than ever at what they are designed for but somehow they have lost their 'magic' and I can't imagine we will ever get that back.
@charl_k2 жыл бұрын
Just hearing (and seeing) it's a ZA car gave me goosebumps. If possible, you should do a special on ZA homologation Beemers, the 333i, the 325iS (with Alpina bits to make it a 2.7 screamer and M-technic body kit), 745i (with, I think, either the M1 6 cylinder or a 3.5ltr turbo). Back in the 80s and 90s South African engineers were very creative in keeping us motorsport addicts entertained. Those cars were legends here in ZA, driven by legendary drivers, Tony Viana, Deon Joubett and co. I assume that some of those cars were imported to the UK. Coincidentally I regularly see 2 E12s in my neighbourhood, and though I'm a Mercedes driver, I still stare, they've always had a certain appeal.

So lovely to see the mahoosive smile on the owners face once they got it running. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple of tears behind his glasses and he maybe felt quite choked up to get his much-loved beautiful Beemer running again.

Love this series! I spent the last 4 months bedridden with diarrhea after a recent trip to Thailand and these vids have been helping me cope with the drastic change in lifestyle. Thanks for all the hard work with these videos.

I live in Chorley and love the Late Brake Show-what an amazing story and an even more amazing car. I hope Peter gets it back on the road and if I see him in it. I will say hello!

I am Indian. So sweet to hear the engine restart after 3 decades. It’s like reuniting with our good old childhood friend. Awesome video, hope to see the restored car.

I drive a Euro spec 1983 BMW e28 520i daily. It was fully restored by BMW technicians using all OEM BMW parts. It has the complete original interior in pristine condition. It was imported from Germany in 1983 and has had only 2 owners before me. I bought it from the original owner after he rebought it from the second owner and fully restored it. Runs and looks like new. It's such a joy to drive.

I love these videos even if it was just a boring old 1L fiesta or something just for the mechanical fault finding and startup section. Don't ever stop Jonny!

Just wow!!! What a dream barn find. Possibly the best episode yet ... Although the 912 burried in the garden was cool
