Love this interview with Brenda Parker. Thank you for mentioning my book BURIED LIVES: THE ENSLAVED PEOPLE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON'S MOUNT VERNON. My hope for this book is that the lives of the enslaved community will step out of the shadows and into the spotlight. One of the people I highlight in the book is Caroline, this woman is one of the people Brenda interprets at Mount Vernon. I've seen Brenda at work and she does a masterful job of bringing dignity and truth to light for visitors to Mount Vernon.

Most of the slaves lived good lives compared to war fighting back in Africa

Are you seriously comparing that to war? Almost ANYTHING is better than war. No shit, bozo!

Would you rather be a slave if it meant you were safe? Or would you rather be a free person and engaged with the politics and conflicts of your country? You are also aware that the colonies were also in a state of constant warfare with native resistance and other imperial powers, right?

You do know that was how slavery was rationalized to soothe the enslavers conscience? Would like to be sold and separated from your family, and to be under the constant threat of rape if you're a female. If slavery was so benevolent why were enslaved people willing to escape even under threat of death.
