THE ROBERT E. LEE is a famous steamship, named after the general. WAITING FOR THE ROBERT E. LEE WAS THE title of one of the songs in THE JAZZ SINGER, the first "talking" movie. Neil Diamond sang ON THE ROBERT E. LEE in his 1980 remake of THE JAZZ SINGER. The number you referenced is the number of the print, not the date it was created. Prints like that are done in a limited run to increase their value.

honestly, the art exists, either you can have it & enjoy it but not dismiss its history, or you can sell it & someone else will love it. I personally think it's fine, like you said, its titled for the name of the ship & its of a ship, not a portrait of the man himself

Steamboats are an icon of Americana. Heck, the very first Mickey Mouse cartoon is famously named “Steamboat Willie”! They were a major part of commerce up and down the Mississippi River. You should totally hang it up and enjoy the beautiful drawing you bought, even if the boat was named after Robert E Lee.

As someone who spent 6 years studying the US Civil War you can hang it up. Robert E. Lee was a confederate general in the American civil war, and yes, unfortunately, his family did own slaves, however before 1861 he was one of the most respected generals in the US army, and after the war he did what he could to help the south rebuild which included doing a lot of work to ensure that the former slaves could get jobs, homes, and had access to education. For what it's worth he was also a very strong Christian, and spent a lot of time reading the Bible and praying. He did come to see slavery as wrong before the end of the war and set his slaves free. He also gave them the chance and resources to leave to go north or he told them they could stay and work for him, offering wages (fare for the time or not is up to other people to decide) and paid for the houses they'd been living in to be rebuilt to be more comfortable. His example was short lived since he died 5 years after the war

He also said the slave owners did them a favor by kidnapping them from Africa as it’s better to be a slave in America than a free man in Africa… so yeah, still a massive piece of shit

This is very much the once-standard hagiographic account of Lee found in "Lost Cause" revisionist accounts of the Civil War. It is now widely understood that Lee was neither an especially kind or generous slave master nor even a particularly competent general. However, with many in the Southern political class wholly disgraced by the bombast of their racist imaginings and the incompetence of their leadership, Lee (and other CSA military officers) became rallying points for Southern revisionist memory. In keeping with certain late-Victorian sensibilities, Lee and his officers became romanticized as modern-day knights representative of an eclipsed Southern chivalric golden age. New fraternal and veteran societies erected memorials to Lee, Jackson, and the rest, but most crucially authored generations of textbooks lionizing the valor and kindly virtues of General Lee - myths which endured and continued to endure for a century. Was Lee atypical among Southern plantation elites? Perhaps not. Lee was a product of his era, class, and region. His livelihood, like many other wealthy Southern men, was tied up in the ownership of other human beings. That said, though he occasionally espoused a view that slavery was immoral, he more often recommended slavery of Black Americans continue indefinitely, forever, as he believed they lacked the same intellectual capacity as Whites. He opposed abolition and efforts during Reconstruction to economically and socially integrate freed Blacks into wider American society. All of this said, as other commenters pointed out, the sketch is of a postbellum steamboat renowned for its racing speed. I struggle to identify her particular work, but it was a very frequent subject for sketch artists for many decades. Other than its namesake, the boat has no connection to the Confederacy or the Civil War and is a fine piece of Americana and the steam era in particular.

That certainly doesn't right the wrongs he did. I don't get people's weird justifications for slavery, confederacy, etc.. 🤔🤔

For those people saying “well it was only named after him so it’s okay”. Let me remind you it was named after a racist man who commanded armies to kill over 100,000 Union soldiers in a fight to keep Africans enslaved. I wasn’t like the person who named the boat didn’t know that.

The thing is- it is really controversial today: how many entities in the southern US are still glorifying confederate army memorabilia, statues, etc. Ultimately the civil war was about slavery. So it is no longer considered acceptable to revere any former representative of the army that fought to keep slavery around. So even if the ship had been named after the war - it is considered unacceptable - the more so the more recently said naming occured. So I am afraid I wouldn't recommend hanging the picture.
