Remember that these rooms are often designed by the "family head" to spend time with family, but they often do not care about it. A lot of people actually make theatres in their basements to enjoy with their families, but all other people would rather chill in a bright living room. These also aren't necessarily very rich people, as all you need for that is a projector, a sound system, a device to play back video and a few chairs/sofas. All are common items that can be found for fairly cheap if you know what you're looking for.

They had hundreds of servants, their whole family tree, as well as large groups of guests living there with them. They were expected to host huge events and had extravagance to impress even more elite guests. In the case of castles, they also had troops and huge compounds with everything they could ever need. Everything was accounted for, and there was logical reason for them never even visit large parts of the house. Building these huge twenty bedroom mansions makes no sense in the modern world, so of course you're trying to fill it with nonsense rooms and furniture.

There actually was a shoe shining room, which doesn’t sound that crazy in a golf club until you realise that there were like maybe 20 people a day on average attending the club most of whom didn’t use the room once. It was such a strange place to work because the exterior of everything was so gaudy and expensive looking but as a member of staff as soon as you cross the ‘staff only’ boundary you are surrounded by paper thin walls and an underground staff room with an ancient microwave and a flickering light.

Big manor houses made sense when people who owned such houses also had staff and held extravagant parties where guests stayed for days. Now a big house like that is just an eccentric collection of taste and interests meant to display how much wealth they have.
@edisonlima46472 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Also, back when those kind of manorial homes were originally built, one would seldom travel further than the next county, so having loads of rooms in your house for different hobbies and activities made sense if you could afford it. If you were 18th Century arostocrat you had to have a library, a hunting lodge, a tennis court, gardens, a smith... because if you didn't, nobody -and no city in your reach- would. And you would often entertain visitors who would ask to use your installations. Now you can have any service, club and sport somewhere reachable by car in 20 minutes and you seat all alone in your smallest room while silence echoes in your other unused 40 rooms.

okay it is hilarious that she panicked about having so many limes in her kitchen that she just went on a fake monologue about how much she loved limes, but on the other hand, her kitchen is very nice. it's cozy and green and feels like a place people actually live rather than the soulless, minimalist nightmare that a lot of rich houses fall into. plus, her house isn't obnoxiously, unusably big like the ones in the video.
