Hello I’m Samantha, and I’m not blind but i know someone that is going blind. She’s one of my bestest friends and when she is 15 she will be blind, right now she’s night blind and she’s trying to learn Braille. She was really happy that I was learning Braille because she wanted someone else to understand

Hey Kayla, this is an inspiring video because braille is, like you said, a very difficult language to learn. After attending a residential school for the blind as a teen, I saw many people who could read braille faster than any side of the person I knew. I was so impressed with this, But was never offered braille while attending this residential school, as I had some residual vision. I have been criticized by other braille readers, for not being able to read braille and it has only been in the last five years that I have not been able to read in large print, only on a CC TV. I am in my 60th year, yes 60, and I am strongly considering learning braille now just to say I “can do it“your video is inspiring me to take the steps necessary to learn this language in this stage of my life. I am certain that this skill will serve you well! I am so proud and excited that younger visually impaired people are using braille as it is such a beneficial tool in our toolbox! Thanks for the great video!

Bama Blind thanks so much for your comment! I didn’t really have any interest in learning it when I was younger because I could read large print. But now, like you, I can’t read large print anymore so learning braille has been great for me. I hope you do take the plunge to learn it and I wish you good luck with it ❤️

(Uncontracted braille, anyway. Yes, contracted brl (see what I did, there) is a lot of memorization, but a lot of them make sense, the way texting does - like, ppl [people], or alw [always].) And, yes, reading tactilely is a long transition.)

You should sign up for Hadley School for the Blind! Im a student with them and they are teaching me braille. It's free! If you can't read large print they will send you a tape, so you have to be signed up for the NLS talking book player program, which is also free. Good luck!

Leslie Ligon I disagree. I’m 63 & have learning disabilities. Do not minimize the adaptation to this complexed language. For many readers it will be daunting & take time & patience. Each person learns at their own rate and style. My short term memory loss will affect my success but it won’t stop me!

Hi Cayla with a C from Brian with an I. I found this video searching for how I can learn Braille. I became legally blind later in life from diabetic retinopathy. I got a book from Amazon on the subject and came looking for other resources. Thank you so very much for being such an amazing resource for me. You are so kind and inspirational but most of all a good teacher. I had no idea how to begin learning and now I have your great idea to start with a muffin pan and tennis balls. That seems like a such a great start especially since it’s so viewable to us with low vision and makes it more hands on. You’re really great for doing all this. I see there are other videos about things I struggle with like Uber and phone or computer screens. Uber is a nightmare I once opened a car door and the girl was not my Uber driver so she screamed. Most awkward situation ever lol. Anyway I subscribed to your channel and I’m so glad to know someone else out there can relate and can maybe help me figure all this out. Please keep making videos and guiding us new people on how to survive what no one close to us can begin to understand. :)

I started learning braille when I was three because my parents pushed really hard for me to learn it early. My fingers are super sensitive to everything now; I’m almost 23, and have kept up reading Braille frequently. I think this is why my fingers are so sensitive to textural differences. It’s interesting for me to see when and how other people learned it, because I don’t know that many people who can actually read it even though I know several blind people.

About a year ago I started teaching myself braille. So far I only know uncontracted and will start classes soon. I started wrighting on a full sgeet slate and stylus. Which is backwards. Now my future braille teacher started showing me on a perkins. Now I am using hers until i get my own. I picked up writing pretty fast. But like you said the most trouble i have is reading. It is hard for me to figure out the letters. But if I sit down and really attempt I get frusturated, but I can do it. I think I just think I cant when I can. But I love braille. Especially a perkins. Thats super fun to use all the time.

Thanks for sharing the tennis ball demonstration. I have been learning Braille online (for sighted users), which comes with the challenge of learning the six key entry after years of being a touch typist! A way to practice simply like this is cool. I have recently been diagnosed with a rod-cone dystrophy, but currently only my night vision is appreciably affected. I’m told it’s likely I’ll retain central vision most of my life (I’m in my early 40s), but I’d like to at least have the memorisation of Braille set in case I ever need it! Plus is gives me something relatively useful to focus on. :-)

My first year of high school, again I had more gr. 1 brl but I never did finish. In college I learned about the music code in my research. I was mad!! I was never even told of this, and all through jr. high and sr. high I was playing piano. I had to memorize everything from print music, and hours of practice to get the notes in my fingers!! College was no different. I tried to teach myself the music code, but I need to practice more. So again as an adult I am trying again. Reading is very difficult. I like to find a good friend to practice with. I think that would be fun and encouraging.

For those who don’t much about Braille, a news letter for example ends up being the size of a short book, braille letters are also used as numbers also, you have to learn how to have sensitive touch so that you don’t go too fast and get each dot, it is a row of three dots in two rows

I’m so scared! I’m 63 & almost totally blind. CRVO (w/ischemic) turned to Glaucoma in 7 months for me in 2016. I was totally blind in my left eye. But 6 months ago my vision quickly began to diminish in my right eye. I can no longer read, see colors or any central vision. I have less than 30% left. But I decided to learn Braille so I can continue to read! And assist me with my Drum lessons. I made a vow to myself that I would learn something I’ve always wanted to do before I lose all my sight! Call it “My Vision Bucket list” I will complete these activities before I’m totally in the dark! But I’m severely ADHD so learning a complex system like Braille at my age is daunting. I did find the NLS program through the Library of Congress so I’m excited that they offer free assistance & aids fo low vision & blind people. Thanks for your help. This is an excellent video. Thank you so much for making this video on Braille. I work at a center that serves children with disabilities here in Brazil, and I serve students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities and would like to exchange and share experiences and learn from you in the USA. My name is José Alípio and I am a teacher, I attend students with disabilities at CRAEDI, Brazil.

Cayla - with a C...Great video. Life is such a random thing. I was sat here today with my supermarket shopping that was delivered yesterday. We're all going for deliveries with COVID. Amongst it - a box of Ibuprofen. Well I'm looking at this box of Ibuprofen and think, hmmmmm it's got Braille. Of course I know what it is - in terms of the intention - but I decided to look into the matter. What a wonderful and tactile use of what is essentially a relatively simple dot code. When I say simple - I mean there are six dots. After that it escalates exponentially. Well I managed to figure out - that on the box of tablets, it said, in Braille - Ibuprofen 200mg - just the letters. Not with my fingers though. I think I can detect an I or E..... maybe a B..... but I need bigger Braille - more like the tennis balls ! I have no issues with my vision by the way - well other than at 51 just moving things to arms length to focus. But truly it's fascinating and my visit was by pure fluke !! I've watched some vids and see people reading stuff at full speed !! Truly amazing !! Hi from England by the way.

So few resources for learning Braille on Amazon or others. Not sure how to find free or inexpensive training. I did find a cool resource I believe in Canada called the Braille Store. A learning cube for my keychain was the best. Never could find flash cards so been making my own. Maybe someone should market this. Especially ones with raised dots. Anyway thanks for what you do and mentioning other tubes for me to learn from. One of the worst things about losing your eyesight is feeling you’re the only one going through it and no one understanding what you feel.

I use zoom tax for a long time and I’m at the point now where I probably need to learn to screen reader but when I try to go to to the rehabilitation Center to use it the teacher basically just yelled at me and got upset because I had trouble remembering the combinations and ended up just leaving it was so terrible so I would love to find out if there’s like a home version of how do use a screen reader I’m teaching myself braille I oddly enough I was legally blind it but the state I live in they refuse to teach people that are legal blind braille they only teach people that are totally blind braille yeah I know I have it I live in the most ass backwards state ever. And because I learn to read sightedly and I kind of learned a weird way because I was usually paired as a child I have a terrible time with grade one braille because I’m used to looking at a word knowing what it is but I can’t spell I can’t remember the order of the words I know what it is when I look at it but I can’t spell so I have the same problem when I try to read in grade one trying to figure out all the letters together I have no clue it’s really frustrating really really frustrating I have had a great one braille book four years and I still to this day cannot read it it’s so frustrating I’m hoping that learning grade 2 would be easier for me but I really have no idea I wish they would print stuff and jumbo braille but I have a feeling I do have a Brailer that has a jumbo braille foot on it so I may just have to write my own stuff maybe

Hi Cayla. I have a specific question with braille. I was looking for the word, "Freedom." I used a translator on the internet and I see that they put a comma before the word. I thought "Freedom" had 20 dots in total. Could you help? Thanks!
@CaylawithaC
@CaylawithaC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m not sure why they would’ve put a comma in front of the word. I think 20 dots in total should be correct. The only thing I can think of is maybe it wasn’t a comma and it was a dot 6 which would make the F capital.

Strawberry Seed Reading a novel in braille is a lofty goal, not to say that it can’t be done but as a rehabilitation counselor for the blind and a student at a residential blind school, my experience is that, if braille is your primary or first language of literacy, One is able to read very quickly and very effectively with their fingers. I have had many, many braille users, ones who only read braille, tell me that it is very taxing on the fingers. I had a teacher in eighth grade, who took the time out of her school day, to read a novel to me. She could read extremely fast with all kinds of dramatic inflection. She was an English teacher at the school for the blind and she said that one of the most difficult things to do is, read a novel. I hope you achieve this goal and good luck with it. It is great that Kayla has posted this video to initiate this dialogue.
