Rosehips form on wild rose bushes after they have flowered as a bright red dry fruit filled with itchy seeds.. We used to collect them as children and take them to school where they were sold for school funds. The company that bought them made them into rose hip syrup , a red sweet viscous fluid given to young children as a vitamin supplement. It all started during WW2. My mother used to pour some onto custard for our sweet course when she had no tinned fruit/ bottled fruit left. Rosehips have many times the vitamin C content of oranges which were very scarce in wartime , whereas the hedgerows abounded in rosehips to make the supplement for babies. I think it's quite normal to refer to say " the Nixon Era " as a name for a president's time in office.

It's that grouping thing - " A parliament of owls " , like " a murder of crows ". They were all originally listed in an old text printed in England hunners of years ago.

The hiker's snack mix is something I've never heard of before. It took me forever to figure it out. The LA Times puzzles have been a nice change of pace even though they're not super different.

Chris had Esso as an NYT big crossword clue and explained it was one of the main oil companies operating petrol stations in Canada. They used to be the main one in the UK but not so much , now.

It's funny how the LAT has a slightly different set of common answers from the NYT: TIER, ERA, RELIC, VISIT. Also AWL is a leatherworking tool, and TCM shows old movies, evidently including ones from the silent era once a week.

Did it about 25 minutes, but had to check and look up things.
