Was wondering if you ever put a cell cam right inside the bedding area to get an inventory of the bucks around. I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of the cuddyback cams that link together in order to figure out the comings and goings and coordinating that with wind direction to come up with a plan. Your thoughts.
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
I love cell cams... But every time I put them over a bed deer get really spooky... Even up high, nothing seems to get past a buck in his bedding area... I like to put them on the exit trail About where I would hunt... Lot less negative reaction that way
@cvongall663 жыл бұрын
@@thehuntingbeast thanks for the insight. Makes alot sense. I noticed that they notice and I almost never see them again on the same trail. Definitely going to use them to pattern the other hunters using the same dnr as me. Maybe I can use their scent to my advantage of they consistently do the same thing all the time. Don't want to screw up their hunt but one guy doesn't need 390 acres for himself.

@stevepalmateer3 жыл бұрын
Best piece of advice Mr. Infalt ever gave me was to get out in January/February and track deer around all day in the snow. Certainly not where they'll be October 1st, but I still learn more about the land and about the deer and how they behave by doing that, than any camera I've ever paid for.

I was able to get out and scout a few times this past week in the light snow we had. Found a bunch of the biggest rubs I've ever found, middle of my chest - middle of the rub! Big tracks still using the area too. Now we are getting hammered with snow. 2' today, more on the way. I will drive around and look for tracks, but I leave them alone when we get real deep snow. Should yard them up if it stays like this. Sheds should be pretty concentrated.
@mrd48653 жыл бұрын
Ended up with a little under 3' and it's still snowing. Feel bad for the deer when it gets like this. We don't usually get this much snow, so it's out of the ordinary for them. Supposed to get 10" more this weekend.

Thanks for the ideas. Question: I hunt a refuge in MD. They only allow hiking established trails or on the roads during non hunt times. No going off trail or road into the woods. How can I scout with these limitations. Maybe I'd be better going farther to public i can scout...
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
Great question... Sounds like you need to do more in season scouting and map scouting on that property, but at this time of year its probably a good time to go learn different "new" areas where you can scout.

Scout scout scout hunt. I've been logging some miles on pieces of public here in central Michigan. It's about my only source of exercise this time of year and very fun as well. Very similar habitat with the dogwood thickets. Trying to hug the bedding areas a little closer than I have in years past. Thanks for the pointers...they sure have helped!

Nice way of breaking down Dave's propertie and where the bucks bed and how you guys hunt them . The funny thing is you can do the same on public. I love hunting both and figuring them out . Always love the videos it motivates me to get out and scout. Hope see you in the marsh

It definitely helps to have someone like Dan making videos! I don't know anyone near me that takes it as seriously as I do. I guess I'm kind of a lone wolf anyway, but sometimes I'll be wading through waist deep freezing water and I think..."What am I doing?" Then I think..."Well Dan would do it and he's a little older than me, so I'll suck it up and not be a sissy." lol
@billweihl28593 жыл бұрын
Very informative info Dan, I did this exact thing right after the first of the year here in Michigan and I found numerous active buck beds but no shed yet but it may of been a little early yet so I'm going to head back again here soon and see what I find. Already picked out a few trees to sit in but I don't leave them in there cause I usually hang and hunt but I did learn a different path to get there so we will see. It's a great time of year to do your homework in the woods and quite a few people don't cause of the weather but come spring and the snows gone and so are the tracks. Stay safe and healthy this winter and get ready for those long beards soon.

Dan what are your feelings towards this heavy arrow trend? 500+gr arrows
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
I like fast and light with a fixed blade broad head... Accurate to greater distances, and gets to the deer faster. Its a trend... When heavy alum arrows were the trend, people went wild for the new at the time light carbon arrows... And for good reason.

Great video Dan. Do you bump does when trying to get close to the buck bedding to hunt? How do you hunt if and when it happens? Thanks
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes... Most of the areas I hunt are pretty low density so it dont happen as often to me as others, but it still happen fairly regular. I try not to, but if it happens I dont worry about it. Sometimes it screws up your hunt, but often the buck still comes out.

This is legit one of the best videos you have done in a while, it hits home so good because of how good you explain the past hunts, which I watched and the map diagrams too. How big would you say the main buck bedding area is on that small ridge? It looks relatively small?
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
That little ridge is about 15 yards long, and there is some spotty satellite bedding in about a 20 foot circle above that. And the lower area has spots on the tree islands and points around the grass, about 1/4 acre. The 1st spot, where I killed my buck is about a 75 foot line along the transition with scattered beds.

Do bucks bed in the exact same spot near a rub or will they bed an arms reach of a previous bed?
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
I believe they pick spots with several factors in mind, scent, vision, sound of approach, etc... They will bed in the exact spot over and over, BUT, they have other spots really close by for different winds, or for thermal changes. Like on ridges where its common to see deer get up and move when t he dropping thermals starts to rise later in the morning when things heat up.
