Learning Glen Helen from a Top 20 Pro! - JWalk vs Jerry Robin POV

Decided to let Jerry Robin @Jerry_Robin70 take my DJI Osmo Action 4 around the legendary Glen Helen Motocross track so I can try to learn from him and figure out this hard pack slippery dirt! Although he's originally from Minnesota, Jerry has lived in Southern California for the last 4-5 years and has these conditions dialed.

He is carrying more speed during the turn but what made the biggest impression to me was how much faster that yamaha would accelerate on the exits!!! It revs to the moon with lightning speed😮😮 When I first saw your pov I thought "well.... He is faster than anyone on the track....." then that yamaha passed by and was gone 😮😮😮😮

I love the videos, Jeff. You do a great job sharing your chance for national points each year. It is a lot of fun to follow along. I always wondered if the amount of oversteer you appear to have in the turns could be a hindrance. Jerry's front fender "holds a line" a little better. Maybe that's a technique adjustment, line selection, or bike set-up, IDK but it sure looks easier. As for trusting your tires..is it common to tune with tire pressures and tube wights? A heavy-duty tube will add some dampening, a little extra stiffness, and a little extra durability...which should allow you to run lower pressures. Maybe you already do that stuff or it's not a thing, but it should be a thing.

it's so interesting because according to all the media tests and stuff the yamaha is a lot more nervous and twitchy, but in reality having it setup right makes the biggest difference.

Honestly his forks look too soft on the compression. He's blowing through his travel and getting into the harsher end portion of the stroke. The gasgas bikes are typically pretty soft from the factory, too... Especially compared to the yamaha. Great for comfort, but when you start ripping it gets choppy. Though I'm sure both of these guys have different valving at this point.

I think some of it is bike setup for sure. The way you enter corners, I might would suggest lowering your forks in your clamps a few mil. (Raise the front). I feel when you’re coming into the rough sections hard braking, it’s causing tons of weight on the front and getting the unsettled chassis look and feel. Would be curious where your forks are in the clamps. But I think this allowing him to carry in momentum off the brakes upon entry give him a smoother apex and exit as well as a settled chassis upon entry. This is all coming from a guy who would give his left nut to ride like you lol. I’m just a guy who loves wrenching on bikes, studying bike setup and riding. Keep on keepin on Jeff. We always have to be a student, keep learning and studying.

Eiii Jeff, in my opinion the biggest diference is on corners and how you both aproach them... Jerry rides smoother make the corners open rounded, while you aproach It more aggresive and try to cut the corners in two or three, on the breaking you brake later than Jerry wich makes you enter the corners faster but with less control and not as ready as Jerry wich makes you corner not very smooth, Jerry stop accelerating early before the corners and don't use the brakes as much as you, he uses more the engine break. I'm from Spain and here most of the terrain are hard pack as roads😅, the better way to ride hard pack is ride very smooth, focus on don't hit your brakes too hard and use more the engine brake, on the corners just let the bike run on the beggining, try to round them as much as you can and use the whole track from outside to inside, and at least on leaving the corner dont be aggresive with the gas, just increase the bike speed on a lineal way, in resume, the key, ride smooth and try to mantain a regular speed all over the track instead being aggresive

I think it's more throttle control is his bigger advantage. You seemed to be revving higher quicker out of turns so I'm sure there's lost traction but yes carrying the moment through the corners will allow for more room for throttle control. Your both faster then I'll ever be but that's just what my eyes and ears are telling me. Regardless your doing enough of the right things to be at the level your at so keep it ripping lol

Wow his throttle control is really good. He is carrying so much momentum he just rolls through the corners and applies power perfectly and at the right time. He also uses whole track to set himself up for the corners very well. Lots of guys on the throttle way to early in corners and rear end spins and kicks out. It feels fast but not. His roll speed in the corners is out of this world. Wow it really looks like speed into the corner just makes everything easier. If you come in too slow, you have to adjust throttle and upset the bike and you just make things harder for yourself. This is a great video to learn from. It's rare for someone to honestly critique themselves on video. Props for that and best wishes in your nationals!!!

Jerry gets such a good drive out of every corner it almost looks like the difference between a 250 and a 450. i wonder if that's more from his setup tuning compared to yours or maybe more trust in the tires, (obviously line choice too). you seem to carry more entry speed and roll through more while he pushes harder on the exits. its a lot of personal preference in style but i learned a lot from the back to back.

I was waiting for the comment at 13:15 and im pretty sure most of the time he tries to get a straight braking stage, whereas you try to take a smooth round entry to the corners, but therefore he can brake harder and more controlled. Sometimes we get stuck with a line that we want to hit at all cost that we loose so much speed while trying to hold this line... most of the time it seems to be the fastest when you "just hammer" the corner and dont worry too much about which line to take as long as there are ruts. But on the other hand on dry hardpack tracks you gotta watch your lines a lot more again and to be able to connect corner to corner in a smooth line, but also the same with as straight braking stages as possible to be able to brake as hard as possible without having a hard time. Really nice to be able to compare you two although you are not even that far away from each other.. I've been watching a lot of AMA Nationals GoPro footage recently to get a better feeling of how the fastest guys attack the track, but that isnt even translatable to the tracks i race and ride on.. So good job with this comparison, this condition is much more translatable to regional tracks in germany than the fully ripped Nationals in the USA hahaha

It seems like he’s scrubbing all the jumps. Also seems to get better traction out of the corners? His bike seems to just jump forward to the next turn. And yes more trust in the tires, seems to switch direction faster and get on the gas quicker. Like you said he’s a top 20 rider, fantastic!

Listen to his off throttle periods in corners. You sound like you full shutoff the throttle and coast for longer duration mid corner until you hit your target point and Jerry has extremely short periods off and returns to some level of throttle on to maintain drive until he hits his target point to really fully turn in the corner. Hope that makes sense but that audible difference seemed really noticeable.

Suspension is huge for hard pack And I think a ECU change will help even more so than suspension. Hard pack you cannot twist it hard or else you will feel loose and uncomfortable. I think you need a ecu change for hard pack Cali dirt. Your ecu is set for sand and very deep soil which is where you need a heavy hitting bike.

Jerry cuts the corner to the inside + utilizes the low end torque of the Yamaha which allows him to accelerate and exit the turns quicker. On the straights, i would say you carry higher top speed, but Jerry does not brake so hard and utilize the engine braking better on entry turns, which allows him to maintain higher coasting speed. Jeff, on such hardpacks try to cut the corners more from the inside. I know you love to take the outside more, but sometimes is not beneficial as this track proves it.

FYI where I ride here in Australia GH looks like a loamy sand track. Suggestion if you have time you tube Appin mx especially the practice track for hard packed it’s blue grooved and like cement by the afternoons.

Let me start by saying you're way faster than me, but I watch enough and ride enough to pick up on a couple of things. It looks like a lot of the turns you're turning two, maybe three times within one turn. In comparison to Jerry's cam, he's got one smooth motion through the turn. Compare 6:30 to 11:49

move your levers in more, soften up the front, glen has nasty chop, levers in will help with elbows dropping. Note that he doesnt use his middle finger for levers, that also helps force elbows up and will help you loosen your grip which will help with arm pump a TON. out west our tracks do not develop the ruts your used to and our dirts not as sticky so you have to find features mid corner to pivot off of. Momentum is key here too just like a sand track except how you get the momentum is different. He's ripping those last few laps, great comparison bud.

Your bike is oversteering compared to Jerry’s thus the difference in corner line choice and exit speed as well as lean angle confidence/tire trust. It looks like on-throttle your bike steps out in the rear so try taking some LSC out of the shock. This will settle the back end through the apex and exit of the corner without affecting ride height and bump absorption through the chop. This should also help keep the front end higher through said chop and eliminate some of the headshake and harshness you are feeling which is likely the fork riding too low in the stroke. Theres a hell of a lot that goes into setup as you well know so ill just say the broader idea here is that Jerrys bike is more understeery and your bike is more oversteery. Essentially through static changes or through clicker and spring/preload changes we would be looking to raise your front end and lower the back without compromising performance. Things you can try in addition to less lsc: drop forks in clamps, more fork spring preload, more sag, bars further back in clamps, taller bars/mounts etc. i would lean towards trying less LSC and more fork spring preload if needed. Hope that helps man

It's definitely set up a lil better and line choice. His bike looks and sounds like he prefers more bottom end torque. Your bike sounds smoother off the bottom. Idk what tires you run but some pros use the DUNLOP AT 82. And depending on the bike a 90 front tire for more comfort. I think you look good tho since your injury. Just have more confidence in yourself. I've been watching you for a awhile and you got it bud. Maybe you think too much. Lol. Idk. I think your doing great other than line choice. Keep it up

His set up is way more planted than yours. Think rebound has a lot to do with it but there is also a compliance aspect of it too. Almost seems like your packing into mid speed then getting a jump in resistance which is intensified by the fast rebound. But what do I know lol. Hate the YZ intake noise!

It sounds like you're letting off the gas before the top of the jump, but it doesn't look like your front end is falling first? Just watch Deegan jump. He doesn't let off the throttle until the bike lands and he encounters a turn. It keeps your momentum going and probably shaves a quarter second off every jump to improve your lap time. Just a back seat drivers opinion.

I guess I see it completely different, sand is too slow sluggish and dangerous going to make me crash, whereas hard pack is easier to control, faster, traction Etc to me dirt is dirt sand is sand and motorcycles right on dirt. Hard pack needs like 8 to 12 lbs tire pressure for me, some even less. Even still, you always go fast, to me.

Just by watching your first 2 laps. What I see as a fan of the sport: You are turning too sharp. The fast line appears to be from the outside into the turns but you are entering turns from the middle of the track.

I think the Yamaha guy's suspension is better than yours. Yours seems too stiff, which results in a bike that's too bouncy and physically exhausting. Preferably, I like Yamaha's suspension better. The question of trajectories... the trajectory he uses is very common for those who ride road bikes. Especially on corner exits... when you accelerate in the middle of the corner, and let the throttle push the bike's trajectory to the opposite side of the corner. You gain time, exit speed and increased traction. And the same applies to entering a bend, making the step per bend and the bend tangent well is a big step towards being a little faster.
