Very nice breakdown, love calling attention to the way Parker uses the phrygian dominant, which is a great tip.

Very helpful. People are forever saying "get some dominant language" or similar - but few actually show how you might actually do that !! I found your worked examples instructive and sitting right in the bebop feel for this. The tie into Donna Lee etc help show how generic this stuff can be. Thanks.

Thank you for talking about Bird's use of 4ths! I was questioning my fundamental grasp of theory (and nascent ear training) because so many videos, even by people who play jazz, treat the 4th as an absolute avoid note (even Mark Levine) and yet I was hearing it everywhere in his heads and solos. I feel more sane now.

Tbf what he said is that we should treat the 4th as a ‘handle with care note.’ People tend to gravitate to black and white absolutes though haha….

I have literally been working on this very tune this week! I had never really listened to it before and learnt the head by ear (which was hard!). I noticed the first section is bascially the same chords as Blues for Alice which helped me learn it fast. It's quite a technical workout on the guitar. I like to think of the phrygian dominant sound as a major triad pair a half step apart, as my brain doesn't like thinking in scales haha.

Great video. One of my favorite all-time melodies . Yes, I’ve noticed those added fourths in the melodies. They sound like suspensions to my ear, because tend to resolve to the third. Sonny Stitt did this a lot in his soloing. Maybe it’s like throwing quick little dominant cords in here and there to add movement within tonic chords?

Yes suspensions - didn’t want to use a scary classical term, but they remind me of Bach
