Your little guy sounds like he's my little guy's age. My little man would just be starting K this year if he was in public school, but he's also almost 6. That's what is great about homeschool. We can do a hybrid grade. :-) I love the idea of using this curriculum. Will have to look into it more.

yes! I let all of my kids work at their own pace. I love having the option of speeding up or slowing down whenever my children need it.

My daughter (will be kindergarten next year) has not grasped her letters or sounds yet. Would this help her grasp letters and sounds?

Yes. It starts out very basic, and it teaches all letter sounds.
