Impressive! 👍 As someone fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, the key for me in all these choices (aside from English, which is my mother-tongue) is attraction to the culture/country. I’d find it _extremely_ difficult to find the motivation to randomly learn a language if: 1. I wasn’t particularly attracted to the culture/country. 2. I wasn’t going to have any real chance to use the language. If you’re being a polyglot for being a polyglot’s sake then, IME, unless you are supremely self-motivated and/or financially rewarded for it, this is extremely difficult to do. My key advice to _anyone_ thinking of being multilingual from scratch: 1. Be attracted to the place(s)/culture(s) that use the given language, otherwise the motivation to continue will drop off very quickly. 2. Try to ensure you pick languages that you will have the chance to use on a regular basis. In my case, I visit France, Spain (South America), Italy and Germany regularly so am constantly getting the opportunity to actually _use_ the languages and keep them ‘topped up’ in the real world. 3. Enjoy it! If it’s a chore, stop. It isn’t worth it. Shakespeare said: _No profit grows where no pleasure ta'en: in brief, sir, study what you most affect._ He is saying that nothing useful comes from work without _enjoyment!_

I'm absolutely not saying this to discourage you or anyone else in any way, but a general note about learning a Scandi language: We're likely going to keep switching to English at the first sign of you struggling until you can hold a reasonably fluent conversation. It's just how we Scandinavians are, so don't be scared to outright ask them to stick to Danish with you and tell them that you really want to practice. Your partner and their family will probably/hopefully be understanding and accomodating, but I frequently see people get very despirited when they've poured their time and effort into learning the language, then they visit Scandinavia and find that everyone responds to them in English. This becomes less of a problem the better you get of course, but you're not getting there in a month. Just remember that we're not switching to English to be mean or rude, it's usually just trying to take the path of least resistance. It's also not a failure on your part in any way. If you enjoy the language and have a use for it it's still totally worth it. Also, Danish phonology is crazy, so have fun with that. :)

This is true. As a native English-speaker, because English is currently the world’s default lingua-franca, unless the foreign language a native English-speaker speaks is better than the English of the foreigner they are speaking to, the foreigner will just revert to English. As you say, in these cases, you have to make it clear to the other person that you would like to practise _their_ language and not just revert to English.👍
@mihan5660Ай бұрын
@@titteryenot4524 i think it highly depends on their native language, but that is very true of germanic language areas. I have found though in mexico and china, people will stick to their native (spanish and chinese) language, even when they have a much higher level of english, as long as the person can get their point across in spanish/chinese. But i have heard finnish (not germanic but still) people say that it can be seen among themselves that speaking english can be seen as more humble than expecting a foreigner to carry out a conversation in their less popular language. But mexico and china are populous countries with a different outlook

Since English is a Germanic language and your native tongue is Arabic, is that why you would consider German hard to learn? I'm a native English speaker and currently learning Spanish but one of the other languages I will learn down the line is German hence my question. I wonder, do you have any tips to help improve my listening comprehension (maybe just do it more? I only listen to YT listening comprehension videos weekly)? I have found that Spanish works well for me the more I am able to immerse myself in it, but once I visited a primary-Spanish speaking country and returned to the U.S., I found my brain getting stuck on processing single words that I didn't comprehend rather than absorbing as much of the message as possible. I try to use KZbin content creators to supplement with listening comprehension videos since I'm mostly studying using Duolingo (>900 consecutive days) and I studied elementary-level Spanish for 5 years between primary and secondary school. If I hear people in public settings speaking, I try to eavesdrop to see how much comprehension I can get from their real-time speech especially since I only get 1 opportunity to grasp the context, meaning, grammar syntax, etc.
@EyaBeldyАй бұрын
That could be the reason! I recommend watching stuff in Spanish. Choose a long series and only watch with Spanish subtitles. Do it as much as humanly possible. You will notice your listening comprehension will improve massively. The key is not to give up. Choose entertaining stuff, not anything that will make you want to keep watching! Good Luck!
