You do the "Gojira pick rake" by raking the side of your pick rather than the flat of it across the string. With or without the natural harmonic. You also need the have the flesh of your thumb scraping along the strings with your pick to add higher harmonic overtones, its a bit like a pinch harmonic. So a lot of your thoughts on how its done are on the right track.

You're spot on about the Gojira scrapes 😂 It's chirping the strings with your thumb/pick the same as a pinch harmonic but pulling up towards your body across the strings. You'll get it! 👏🏻

For the pick scraping Mike did a little tutorial on Riff Hard. He pulls his pick sideways across the strings while also touching it with his thumb, similar to a pinch harmonic. You managed to work it out in the video, it just takes a bit of practice

Respect for trying to learn this song! It’s honestly quite difficult to get sounding exact and with the groove! Also, little tip!! Drop pedals/software and/or extended range 7 strings are your best friend! I play a 27 inch scale down a half step and use a digitech drop or the drop setting from his amp software to go down. Sounds fantastic and no flubiness!

I think Joe duplantier of gojira always holds the pick perpendicular to the strings (like cutting across the strings) when making that harmonic scrape sound while the left hand mutes and hits that harmonic like you were saying! I need to practice that too 😅

Favorite song is The Beauty of Suffering. Tuning down is always fun though it can be easy to just chug on the low string. Lowest i've tuned is drop G# for a Metallica song. Anyways, great video Djentchelf!

As for the scraping sound: they turn the pick so that the side/rib of the pick is perpendicular to the direction of the strings

@@RachelfGuitar Try using your ring finger to do the “harmonics” instead of your pointer finger. You want to do a “rolling” technique so you aren’t letting the notes ring out. Even though they are very quick, it will help make it sound a lot cleaner instead of laying your finger down all of the strings at once. Also, pay attention to your picking hand and play with where you are doing the scrapes themselves and at what angle. He is using a multi-scale guitar so it will be slightly different for him because of the angle of the nut and bridge. It’s the same kind of logic when you are playing different pinch harmonics, where different points on the string will give you different harmonics depending on where you are fretting with your left hand. The 3rd fret isn’t a really great “natural” harmonic, but that’s kind of why it makes it very good to use that for pick scrapes because they are short and quick. Hope this helps!

has been a while since I played guitar so I dont know drop F# on a 7 sting...guess I could just follow the online charts..maybe you could try your scrapes closer to the bridge/tail

I have an 8-string and still can’t play a single Spiritbox or Sleep Token song. Thank you for showing the way!
@RetribuseSnake
@RetribuseSnake 5 ай бұрын
However the 8 string is much closer in terms of just getting the strings to fucking cooperate for this, or possibly even a 9 string, dont you agree? that being said, I would NEVER use standard 8 string tuning for how I want to play. My crowd wont pay me for it. The 8 string is just so out there, that I cant legitimise that investment until such a point as I am making consistent royalty payments, then i can actually fork out the dough. And thats the 8. For a 9 I'd be more interested in how Big Joe Williams used to play it. That's something i can actually get paid to do....

@heartherainsing 4 ай бұрын
what do you mean you can't play a sleep token song? they have like the simpliest guitar parts i've ever heard in the genre, it's just super slow single notes with pretty easy rhythmical patterns, I know this cause The Offering was the first song I've learned in the first week of picking up a guitar haha

Hey Miss Rachel, I have a question, when you were first learning guitar, did you learn it all on your own, or did you have an instructor to help you with it? I ask because I've been trying to learn on my own but it hasn't been easy, which I know that it isn't intended to be easy but just curious, and if you did learn to play on your own, do you have tips for a beginner?

Love Spiritbox though. but gonna sell my 7 string cause just getting too hard for my old ass to hear low pitch notes. You using any modelers or just all Software? I got a prime and now a Fractal FM 9 Turbo .. I'm old but not ded LOL. tech is amazing right now but a bit expensive for young players lol

which is stupid. a pedal, distortion, and a slide should do it in combo if nothing else does. god i miss my slide. finding another one for my big hand has been worse then pulling teeth. dropped it in the grass last spring. my capo i managed to replace, even upgraded it, but my slide is fing gone.
