I was in the 10 years beating it into my skull, when I was 8 years old, of slamming keys from a personal teacher....of course I'm the idiot that then stopped playing for 20 years, and forgot most of it....so time travel would be my #1 tool, to go back and kick my 18 year old self, and tell him "NEVER STOP PLAYING YOU KNOB".....

I've been playing for over 50 years and the best bit of advice I can give you is to learn your chords. Major, minor, 7, maj7, diminished and augmented to start with. Once you've fully learn't those shapes in any key you'll find everything will start to fall into place and become more instinctive and certainly a whole lot easier. 😎

Open Studio did a segment on Small Chords (6th shape) earlier this year, and it made a world of difference for me, being able to grab those more and more automatically with practice. So yes, I totally agree.

Thanks. By learning them to become instinctive - I take it you mean to learn them to a point that you know the shapes - and crucially - the character of each, so that you can improvise freely with intention? Is that it? I’ve only been playing for a year or so, but I’m probably at the point where I should actively learn this, instead of just jamming away as I do.

@@johncitizen8828 all i know is when I started a couple years ago I had to think about finger position on every chord I played. Now my fingers just kind of "go there" without having to think about it. Not in every key, but still. It's kind of magic. I'm still not good at this, but I can bang out the chords on par to if I were strumming guitar. muscle memory?
@kadiummusic
@kadiummusic Жыл бұрын
@@johncitizen8828 Yes, once those shapes and combinations start to become instinctively part of your playing you'll be playing colours rather than notes. You know the chord, you know the flavour of that chord, now playing a combination of those notes in any inversion will take you in that direction. 'Instinctively' is the key. The less you have to think about it the more expressive your playing will be. Chords, inversions of those chords and then the adjacent scales to those chords. That's the musicians palette. 😎

No one learns in just one way, it's a combination. Know yourself. For example, I'm visual, kinesthetic, reading/writing, and auditory. Emphasise the most applicable styles first but include them all. If you're not having fun it's a waste of time. Revisit what you learn after 24 hours, 3 days, a week, a month, and 3 months as this flags what you learn as important and strengthens neural connections and muscle memory. I'm 60 and still have no problem if I treat meself with kindness and not try to cram stuff in unreasonably fast. By the way, thanks for infecting me with an obsession for Falcon. It's so good.

These are some good tips. Love using decoda but the biggest techniques for my learning has been short repeatable practices. Like melodics free to hold myself to just 5 mins a day. Its just 5 mins so it doesn't feel obtrusive and it wont make a huge difference at once but when I check back every month there is measurable difference. Plenty of free tools out there to try.

I'm using hardware cheats: my Arturia Keystep 37 does chords and my Polyend Seq records all pressed keys and allows me to either try again and again until I got it right, or modify position, pitch, length or velocity of notes afterwards while still having full control over my synth / effect settings. So once I recorded the right MIDI notes, I can still change the sound or apply effects as my instruments are still playing "live" which is a huge advantage over audio recordings. All in all, what my hardware does is: provide satisfying and motivating results and keep me trying - which over time miraculously improved my piano skills. Weird how learning works 😅

I'm very grateful to Melodics, which I use to practice keys and pads. It has provided me a backbone from which I can explore other things but then come back and continue making measurable progress. The gamification part does help me when days are busy but I know that if I have even a 10 minutes short session I will get something done.

Good video 👍. As a bass player I find piano frustrating. Bass playing is very patterns-based and it doesn't take long to be able to get a good level of facility in the fingers and play most things. Then it's just a process of continuing to learn or create new patterns. In contrast, on the piano, that facility is expected to build via osmosis by learning lots of tunes and at some point the fingers will hopefully develop the ability to play what you want to play rather than being chained to other people's creations - I have no ambition to be a concert pianist or play in a covers band. I want to be able to throw riffs and phrases at the keys in the same way I do on the bass before my piano teacher retires! The physicality of the keyboard means it's not so easy but just learning the fingering of the major and minor scales gave me glimpses that there are things that can be generalized and therefore systemized.

Nice video and good tips. One thing to consider that can often hamper a person’s ability to learn is a lack of physical ability. Some people are born with natural abilities and can play multi-tiered organs with both hands and both feet and think nothing of it. Others will struggle just to plunk down one chord or will have to layer many takes just to get half decent results. While Ableton does make it very easy to create music on all levels, it can also be too easy and somewhat limiting at the same time. Muscle memory is key here, learning phrases, and chaining the phrases together is often a good approach as well.

Great video ! 🙂 For my part, what has helped me is to figure out when I will practice my piano, systematically, every day. I have started to play the piano in May 2021. I started really small, i.e. 5 minutes, no more, but every day, to create a habit After a while, I found myself busting that time, so I increased it to 10 minutes. The objective is to create the habit of practicing. After another "while", I found myself practicing more that one time per day, then, playing just for fun. A good book I read recently on this topic is this one: How to practice music, by Andrew Eales.

I would suggest to learn proper fingering early on in case someone is serious about learning the piano properly. I think it's essential to not run into some serious roadblocks once progressing to more advanced stuff. I'm not so sure how those YT playthroughs will give guidance on that. Although it might appear unattractive at first, I'd certainly suggest to meet a teacher in person from time to time, just to identify some pitfalls early on. Autodidactic learning is great, and I do it myself a lot, nevertheless a qualified teacher can identify some pitfalls within a few minutes or seconds, which would take months up to years to correct, once they have become automated. Many teachers do also give lessons on an irregular basis, so there is no need to go there every week, do home assignments every week etc... Maybe a lesson once a month, or every other month would do the job. A teacher is also a great resource to get advices on which pieces to practice next, based on one's current skill level.

One of my greatest moments while learning was discovering the circle of fifths and constructing my own circle from scratch on paper while playing the chords out on the keyboard to confirm I understood it. That changed everything for me because all of a sudden, the whole keyboard and all chords, scales etc. came together in a relative way. And yeah, getting my fingering sorted early helped a whole lot too. Still have much to learn but some basics makes such a difference creatively.

Being a right-handed guitarist, I find traditional piano stuff dificult af to learn, because it seems to me that the rhythm(low end) notes being on my left hand go directly against the muscle memory that I've developed over the last... forever. Suddenly my pinky finger is the lowest note of a scale, instead of the highest, and my 'rhythm hand' is now my 'melody hand'. Frustrating, but in a very fun way! Good stuff, man! Congrats on your TR-8s "accident"! 😋

One thing I have found incredibly helpful on balancing right hand dominance is to switch to using your mouse with the left hand. Originally I did this to help counter RSI and it took about a month to get really comfortable with. The result is I'm more ambidextrous which makes the piano stuff easier to learn. Additionally I also recommend learning some drumming fundamentals. I often say that learning to play drums was the single most helpful thing for developing my guitar playing. These strategies help to develop hand and foot separation which helps hugely when a guitar guy decides to try to also be a piano guy.

When writing for piano its good to keep in mind that, although there is a place for minimalism, dont forget that piano players can play at least 10 (10!!) notes at a time! I wrote a very minimalistic piece for a very talented player, and it almost felt like i did them an insult! Piano is a very versatile instrument, and it always helps to find a composer you really enjoy, learn (or attempt to learn) some of their pieces, and let it influence your compositions!

Can’t go wrong with both Arturia & Native Instruments products, but those come with a slight higher premium of cost. Just below those two (who are atop the whole food chain) in terms of price/ quality then I’d roll with either M-Audio or Novation products, or possibly Akai.

@@karmatosed7211 I've been looking at the Novation 61SL MK3, it looks appealing because of how well it integrates with Ableton right out of the box and also because it has semi weighted keys which seems appropriate for learnng Piano in order to be able to play synths well. Speaking of Arturia, I have my eye on the Arturia Polybrute Synth to buy in the future when I can justify purchasing it, once my skills are good enough to make full use of it. :D

@@ZakkFromSource if you can find a shop to test the keys out before buying I’d highly suggest that. I’ve used some semi-weighted that felt nice initially, but after an hour or two of playing my fingers became more fatigued & I started to realize that particular midi keyboard actually felt like the added weight actually caused it to require more pressure to register the note being played. But that has only happened once to me so far. I’m no pro on piano but I play guitar so really didn’t expect my fingers to tire as they did. NI and Arturia has easily always had the best feeling keybed’s in my humble opinion, & the older model NI keyboards can be had for a bargain if you buy certified refurbished. I haven’t had the chance to play any novation yet though so I can’t really speak on them, but NI and Arturia allow you to also change presets from keyboard itself with certain vst’s, or with NI anything you load into Komplete Kontrol can be tweaked from only the keyboard.

@Venus Theory I am by NO means an expert at piano playing. However, I did take 2 lessons when I was 13 years old. They were paid for by one of my middle school teachers that really shaped my love of the arts. After those two lessons, I understood how the 'keyboard' worked. Again, I am NOT an expert at all. However, using the keyboard became my instrument of choice. I have made many pieces, I have been 'paid' for many pieces. (Nothing that successful, however, I play everything I produce using a digital piano.) Keep at it. I still 'suck' at playing piano but, I love doing it. I am not about 'getting subs' or being the best. I am about basically 'making other people a few cents with my videos and playing'. It took me almost 2 years (once I returned to music) to get 'flagged' by the KZbin algorithm for copyright. I took that as a badge of honor. I played 'Chariots of Fire' by hand, on my old Casio Privia 160 and it was, close enough to get 'flagged'. To me, that was an 'achievement'.

I've been relearning piano since 2021 - after 30 years away from it. IMHO the most important thing to remember is "repetition is magic". No one sucks at learning piano, they just haven't repeated something enough. . For me it is always like this: 1. I can't do it 2. Repeat it 100 times * (repeat way more than you think is needed, to lock it in) 3. I can do it * break it into small pieces that are easy to repeat, then put those pieces together The word "practice" is too vague, repeat is a better word.

(notice that these individual chords are two white notes apart) Now just lower the middle note of each chord to make them Minor chords. i.e Cm is C Eb G. Fm is F Ab C. Gm is G Bb D. Play chords with both hands and sing as you would if you are strumming a guitar. The basic approach to things needs to be : it is going to take a lot of time until you start making some real progress ... this is what makes most people stop doing things shortly after the very beginning or procrastinate. There needs to be the final target (vizualized) in front of you all the time = this is what will make you switch off the TV and start doing something to improve things around you or yourself. You need something which will force yourself to train on that piano keyboard for 60 minutes each and every day ... 1/ set a target, visualize it, print it and put it on some visible place where you cannot miss it 2/ if you are tired or lazy, always look up at that visulization to remember what you want to achieve 3/ every time you lose your motivation, make sure to return back to step 2.

This is why I can’t say enough why joining your school’s beginner band & high school band is one of the absolute best things a young mind can do for themselves if they feel a heightened interest in music. Aside from giving the ability to read sheet music & build a solid foundation for theory, things like competition to a county & even state level with sight-reading being a core component yields great reward for greater drive to the point that it can actually fund one’s tuition fully. More so than anything tho, it teaches people how to actually “get good at something”. I’ve found that most ppl have no clue how to get good at anything or the commitment it takes besides tasks delegated to them from their boss or superior. I hate seeing when ppl never made a point of getting good at anything simply because it made them happy to do so.

I've found V.A.R.K works best when you use them all together. The more ways you know something the better you know it. By the way, check out a book called "Make It Stick". It's about how to learn things in general, the memorization process. Many of the concepts apply to music.

jsyk this "learning styles" thing put forward at the beginning of the video is false, although it is true that different people might learn things in different ways.

The downside of 'making a video that's not three hours long'. But, for the sake of argument I think it covers enough ground here. No need to get into the weeds when that's not really the point of the video to begin with.

Jesus loves you so much that he died and paid the price for our sins. But it doesn’t end there, Jesus rose back to life 3 days later and for those who believe and put their faith in Christ, they shall be saved from sin and hell and given eternal life in heaven.🙏🏾

Been playing the piano on and off for many decades but always learning. Its best to know the benefits if you go about it the right way. Your memory should get a whole lot sharper Other benefit is music theory is generally easier to understand on a keyboard If you can hear and recall of the various chords as someone mentioned below, that's a good thing I dont think there are many shortcuts, you have to practice. If you enjoy noodling on the keyboard for hours and days on end you will get better Listening to a lot of music especially jazz has helped. A few years back I glommed onto Kent Hewitt's channel. Its a great resource for jazz, theory and piano playing. kzbin.info/door/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCw

Hook Theory is the only mention here that I was already familiar with, but I found all the mentions be instantly helpful. Still gotta dive into zPlane but it sounds pretty epic imo. Also Hook theory is an amazing resource that is inclusive to all playing abilities & not just beginners/ tenderfoots. It’s too rare that I hear content meant for teaching actually acknowledge & dive-in to how our style of learning can be as individual as we are. Besides Karen’s. 🫣😹🙃. But it makes sense that such a prevalent hazard gets acknowledged with inadequacy elsewhere, cause VT rolls into battle with a superior cast iron colossus blade of ‘Logic’, opposite patriarchal ‘Resistance’ shield of ‘Mediocrity.’ I mean he’s not gonna do all the leg work for anyone, but from what I can tell this is ample material to get most anyone with a little drive & enthusiasm well on their way. Good stuff as always suave’ mustache intercom imploding voice guy.
