First off Daniel, thank you for the kind words on the series. On this picture, I used mostly 3 main tips. I used a medium skew tip, a writing tip, and a large spoon shader. What kind of finish do you apply or sealer after..? Or do you have tutorial video about finishing.?newbie here

You can apply any wood finish you see fit Amelito. Varnish, shellac, etc. My personal choice is a water based, sating finish varnish. It adds a slight sheen that doesn't distract from the burning while protecting the piece as well. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Ken, the final project is amazing. Looks like a sepia print. Will you put ant type of finish on it or leave it natural? Well I am glad you covered this in three videos, way to much information to take in with just one. Nice job and thanks for sharing.

Great series. Learned a lot. You say 30 hours to finish this project. If you were to sell this commission then surely the price point would be off putting. 30 hours at my day rate would be £500. Who would pay that for a piece of art no matter how beautiful. I get that first and foremost you do your pieces as a labour of love but can you actually make any money wood burning projects? Genuine question.

There are so many ways to answer this comment. Let's start off with stating that I no longer do any commissioned pieces and I haven't for years. But when I did, there are those that would pay big bucks for a piece but for the majority, a large price tag was not in the budget. I never made large amounts of money off of selling one piece, whether it be a wood burning or another piece of woodworking. Where I made the money, was in selling much smaller pieces at lower prices. Those pieces that are quick to make and you are able to reduce the price are what sells on a regular basis. If we take away the hourly rate equation, you can also make some money that way. The rate you get paid now is for a particular skill that you may have and the years of experience that you have doing it. It's pretty hard to demand the same hourly rate for a craft like woodworking or wood burning. It's just not economical. There's a reason the term "starving artist" was coined. I have seen many try and many fail at making a career from their craft. It's truly a tough business to make any money in and most of them have side gigs. Smaller projects. Selling Patterns. Instructional books etc. I'm lucky enough that I have a full time career and woodworking is my hobby, therefore, there is never a need for me to calculate hourly wages, prices and material. If I wanted to sell a piece, I would sell what I think it is worth to me as long as I don't compromise that price, then I am never disappointed in what someone pays for my work. @@acutabove_woodworkings thanks Kenny. I've always wondered this. I do my own work fundamentaly because I enjoy making things that bring pleasure to others. I did a commission last week ( a wood burning) for a twitter friend and it actually cost me money in materials and postage let alone the 6 hrs in the piece, but I didn't mind. I know the piece I made for him was gonna give him pleasure whenever he looked at it and that was good enough for me. Plus I enjoyed making it and learned so much about the craft in the process of doing so. I tend to make stuff that I want to make in the first place, then that gets photographed and put on my FB, insta. I'm still learning but would like to have a small income as I approach my retirement so the tips on making small easy turned items that sell well is one I'll take on board to craft shows in the future. With big pieces to show as a gallery more than a shop with the smaller items for sale to produce an income. Thanks so much for you reply. Keep up the great work and channel. This particular cooling fan is not a 12VDC or 24VDC motor, but rather, a 120volt AC motor. They are definitely not the commonplace motor for a computer but that's the rating on this one. Now I´m proud of my own Razertip woodburner :) In Germany unfortunately you can´t get a razertip. So I started a journey to the netherlands and got my own one. The razertip is so much better than my old burner “Brennpeter”. So thanx again!!

Pricing your work is something very personal Andrew and I can't tell you how much your work is worth. I have heard people say that you should never settle on a price or sell a piece just for the sake of selling it. I have also heard that you should document your hours that you spend on a piece and decide what you think is a fair hourly rate, + material, + markup and then call that the price. All I can say for sure is that you should never under sell yourself. Your work is valuable and it is a piece of yourself, poured into every item. So price it accordingly. If someone likes it enough and you are good enough, it will always sell. I hope this has helped a little. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Thanks for the kind words. The burner and pens that I am using are all made by Razertip. I say "pens" instead of "tips" because these are an all in one unit and the pen and tip are all one piece. Do you apply on it any oil or lacquer for protection?

I like to apply a coat of either spray lacquer or varnish. It really depends on the project and what effect you are looking for. With this one being burned on a wooden case, it needed the extra protection and therefore it got 3 coats of satin finish varnish. Projects that are framed under glass, I prefer to only put one coat of finish on it as the glass will provide the other protection needed. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
