In this #kungfu video I teach Kourosh from Bob's Life how to use a #bostaff . The bo staff is a powerful yet peaceful weapon of the #martialarts and was the ultimate weapon of a #shaolin monk since it embodied the quote "avoid rather than hurt, hurt rather than maim, and maim rather than kill for all life is precious and none can be replaced! Enjoy.

I think the lad needs a staff that's just a wee bit shorter. But he's doing great none the less, thanks to Jake's great guidance and teaching. Cheers!

It's reglamentary. I also learned being much shorter than the staff but that way it's easier to control it once you grow up.

Great video! When holding the staff would you have advice on hand placement? I feel like if I shift twords the leading end of the staff during a spin I can pull and lead the staff more directly. I've taught my self mostly and just wonder if what I've learned by feel is comparable to a structured form. Keep up the great work, I love your channel!
@jordanaguirre5813
@jordanaguirre5813 6 жыл бұрын
Also self taught 4 years with an arm length short staff and like 7 months with a chin height staff. I find Control is in the back hand and the lead hand is more like the follow through or the complimentary movement. It's more apparent if you grip lead hand mid staff and the back hand at the end of the staff. Other than that I find myself constantly shifting grip and as long as you aren't hurting the wrists or your body and the staff doesn't fall its all fair game.
@KaptainCanuck
@KaptainCanuck 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what is being done. The standard grip is to divide the staff into thirds and put each hand at one third intervals. In a forward thrust, the hands slide toward you so the nearest hand is about one hand width from the end and the forward hand about 30 cm from the rear hand.

Just a quick question from this video make sure ur risk is relaxed if it’s not you’ll injure your hand and risk and importantly make sure the bo staff goes freely under ur armpit like if this was helpful! Edit: if u want a combo bo staff trick go visit ZAK SONG KUNG FU
@teonaantonescu7586
@teonaantonescu7586 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the recommendation. I actually tried a bo staff exercise only by copying what I had seen in a KZbin video (not this one) and I held tight the broom stick (which was quite heavy, not ratan or light wood essence) and after about 2 hours of exercising a muscle in my forearm swell and then for a week I couldn’t even press my phone button, the pain in my fingers was that bad. I couldn’t hold an instrument for writing for 3 days. So I think the weight of the bo staff is important and how to hold it too.
