What you are talking about is an important point for new guitar players. The guitar is a very shape inherent instrument. We first learn shapes, for chords and scales and then only later start to learn what the notes are within those chords and scales. Once I started to try to play farther up the neck, then I needed to know a bit more about where notes were. What I've found is the notes comes naturally over time as you try to expand your abilities and rote memorization of the notes doesn't really work without a context for the information.
