This presentation describes the themes of imagination, play, results, how we can learn from the creative industries and that the only barrier to fundamentally restructuring our notion of 'curriculum' and 'school’ is the self-imposed limits we place on ourselves.
Adrian Camm is an educator and speaker who explores the intersection of culture, learning and design. Currently Head of Teaching & Learning at The Geelong College, Adrian has previously held the role of Curriculum Innovation at Quantum Victoria, a Centre of Excellence & Innovation in Science & Mathematics. At Quantum Victoria he developed and led innovative programs utilising the latest technologies and research in the area of STEM education. As a vocal advocate of experiential & project-based learning, Adrian has had the chance to present his innovation for the future of learning to leading innovators & thinkers in business & industry including Dr. Edward de Bono, Daniel Dennett and one of USA’s top ten entrepreneurs and inventors Raymond Kurzweil. I love all that you are saying! I agree 100%! I would give anything to teach like this...how can we when here in the US we are held to educational "standards"..... we always have to teach to the standards.....if they left us teachers alone and trusted us to do our jobs, we could teach this way and the standards would be reached anyway!

Dear Adrian, I wish desperately that we had the type of educational system that you describe. Unfortunately in the US, we have been hijacked by politicians and administrators who know nothing about education except paper and pencil and standard assessments. The only time I have been able to teach as you describe was when I was a head teacher in a day care/preschool center with a director that agreed with me, as you do, that children learn by playing, and that we should let them lead us on the journey. Now I am in a public school in Massachusetts, and I can't wait to retire, as I don't want to be a party to the kind of education we are forced to stuff down children's throats.

You might be interested in a book Margaret McMillan wrote in 1903: eduation through the imagination. She was the first who determined the place and function in primary education.
