Great video. I would like to share a very important piece of information. I am an experienced 337 pilot. I was trained by a Vietnam pilot who flew the O2. It is virtually impossible to maintain Vyse under the following flight condition, rear engine windmilling, full flaps, and gear down. You cannot maintain blue line. Forget about climbing, forget about level flight. Start looking for a place to land. I loved my Skymaster. My $.02 worth.

Thanks for sharing!
@fsodn11 ай бұрын
@MrNobody: So...er...why would you expect to be able to maintain level flight in those conditions? That's an extremely high-drag configuration. I would think your procedure at that moment would be while maintaining control, shed as much drag as possible as quickly as possible (feather rear engine, raise gear, flaps to takeoff) and then retract the rest of the flaps when you're at Vse. Right?

Always start the takeoff roll with the reat engine only, to make sure that it is operating at 100% efficiency. So easy to end up being short on power and short on runway.
@DeadstickAdventures3 жыл бұрын
100% agree! We teach this to all new 337 pilots although the video didn't actually show it. That issue has caused at least 2 fatal accidents in Australia in 337s and it was an important aspect of the pre-flight briefing.

After ground school in high school I was fortunate to have a friend hose father had one. I learned straight off in this series aircraft. One must remember however the first rule of flying. Never get yourself into a situation you are not trained or certified for. Never had an issue flying this complex airframe from the get go. Too bad Cessna no longer makes them and to find one with low time on the airframe and NDH would be fantastic. Those micro switches are still notorious for landing gear deployment and locking. These are one of the first components I would replace on a retractable version if they are over 10 years old. I did see an interesting conversion years ago done for some US government agency. Turboprop conversion. Long nose to accommodate the mill but the W&B on this airframe must have been a bitch considering the loss of the rear engine but from what I was told the turboprop mill is a lot lighter than a piston.

This is, by far, my favourite twin engine aircraft! I do not bother getting a twin engine certification because I can not find a Skymaster 337 anywhere, affordably. It looks like I am stuck with a lethargic 152 Aerobat. It is a retired flight school plane and it shows. When the school went defunct, I got the old aerobat for $18,000, with a few extra parts. At least it had the flight worthiness certificate current. It is one ugly bird. But, parts are super cheap, everywhere, and very easy to install. Some say I may have paid too much for the Aerobat. IHowever, it is the only cash aircraft I have ever seen that is airworthy.
@DeadstickAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with a 152 Aerobat! We actually own one at the moment too but thinking of selling. Do you know how much they’re selling for at the moment?
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
@@DeadstickAdventures They are still going for around $48,000 well maintained with a few upgrades. If you have modern avionics and radio on it and have done some minor interior improvements, ask around $80,000 and let them play with the number no lower than 72,000. Of course, a bone stock, clockwork avionics with the OEM radio and interior can still be bought less than the $48,000. But that is just a junkbox with wings. I once saw a 152 Aerobat with a fuel injection retrofit! That one would easily go for over $120,000. He had everything you could think of for improvements, except a pressurised cabin.
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
@@DeadstickAdventures By the way, the Aerobat I have is very ugly. It is considered an experimental. The wings are a different colour from the tail. The interior is made out of mismatched seats, and the doors do not match. But it has a current airworthiness certificate.

And that's a rear engine failure way below MTOW resulting in little or no climb performance. Good luck when heavy and a high density altitude, when it becomes effectively a single with a partial engine failure. Nice enough to fly, but not the ultimate solution for twin engine safety.
@DeadstickAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, there’s not much chance they’d climb under adverse conditions (hot, heavy, high). The bonus is that at least they’re easier to control if you do lose an engine and get slow!
