After 3 failed attempts, I beat Final Fantasy 7 in early 2024 and I have a LOT to say, especially since I'm gearing up and playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth right now!

One thing that needs to be stated, is that when you play FFVII on a CRT TV at 240p, A LOT of the design choices just comes together and make sense. The chunky field models are chunky because they NEED to be (to be visible and readable), The character design is very much based around shapes and colors to make characters stand out from one another. The pre-rendered backgrounds and cutscenes looks both sharper and smoother at the same time on a CRT, the way they were intended. So really one of the major issues with FFVII today (at least visually) is how poorly it scales to modern resolutions and displays. It's such a shame that Square Enix didn't re-render the backgrounds to fit 480p for the 1997 PC release. If that was the case it would've been so much easier to authentically remaster the original.

Thank you for pointing this out! Sometimes I wish I could play Super Metroid and ALTTP for the first time on a CRT TV instead of a HD TV haha 😅 Hearing from people who played FF7 back in the 90s really gives me a new insight on things!

No idea how this video came up in my recommended but I’m glad it did. What a great retelling of your journey. FF7 is special, and FF in entirety is special, it’s why I think a favourite FF is what speaks to you most. I’m used to the DOS era of playing games so the pre-rendered backgrounds and simple 3D models really appeal to me but I’m glad you found a way to enjoy it, and those mods really do justice to a classic. I enjoy how earnest and chill your attitude is, I’ll definitely subscribe to keep watch for your other stuff. I hope you enjoy Rebirth when you get around to it.

Have fun with it! It's a good time though sometimes a little annoying lol. Final Fantasy is a really cool franchise and each game really stands on its own. Also fun fact, the history of FF7 intertwines with the inception of the Xeno series since Xenogears was initially a pitch for what FF7 could have been! It's a really cool story of development and Mr. Takahashi's tenacity. I can still see a lot of Xeno related influence in the 7 games tbh 😎

Oh god no. Remake and Rebirth completly butchered original story and message. Original story was about accepting death, and taking accountability. Remake turned that into fighting against fate, and anything that makes you feel bad can be reversed. COMPLETE opposite of what original was going for. Add giant middle finger they gave to the fans using fate ghost, overly bubbly Japanese anime acting for the cheesy cringe, and padded gameplay to stretch the gameplay and ruin the pace the original had, FF7 Remake and Rebirth is complete trash of game. Thanks to the original material it has more charming characters than FF13, but other than that practically same level trash. Remake and Rebirth is NOT a proper replacement for FF7 original.

Hullo woah woah - Cait Sith?! Mid?! You leave my pal alone! hahahahaha As someone who played this game the year it got released, I understand why there was difficulties getting into it. In comparison, if Fire Emblem Awakening and Xenoblade were your first JRPG experiences with amazing graphics, that was the outlook I had back in 97. I replay FFVII nearly every year as it is just "that game". Also good thing that Erek Laddington pushed you towards finally pushing through. Worth the wait dude.

Also idk if you've heard of the FF7 New Threat mod, if I ever plan to do a replay I'll definitely try that out for a fresh experience on the original! Nonetheless, I'm still really glad I played it. So happy you were finally able to finish! I did everything your friends said NOT to do: I played Remake first back in 2020 and then later played the Switch port with the modifiers carrying me through half the game haha. What's great about Remake which not a lot of veteran fans give it credit for is, yes it's a story that relies on the the context of FF7 classic and therefore it's recommended to play classic THEN Remake- But ignoring all the callbacks and differentiations of Remake, it's still a fantastic modern introduction to this wonderful story and cast of characters packaged in a much more attractive coat of paint. Evidence of that is you still being able to go back and fall in love with the original (even after three failed attempts). I'm usually in the minority when it comes to this but I'm a firm believer in you shouldn't have to follow any kind order or directions if you just want to get into a series. Great storytelling, I really resonated with your journey as someone who also stresses over revving up a game over multiple attempts and finally being able to see what the appeal is at the end of it all. Keep it up man!
@nishquikpops
@nishquikpops 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Going back and seeing some cutscenes in Remake really hits different now with the context of the original. But I totally agree with you. Remake in it's own unique way is super special and for me personally allowed me to relate to the characters in og a bit more. Really good voice acting and animation work really go a long way to bringing these characters to life and Remake and Rebirth (tbh more Remake) blows this out of the park. When it comes to getting through games like this, I knew I had to stick it out for this one, but I gotta see if I keep the same energy for future games that test my patience...!!

if ff7 isnt ur first final fantasy game, youll have a similar opinion to other people in the same boat. ppl are generally very biased to their first FF game, mine was 5 so i think ppl who started on that era will gravitate toward liking 9. but i find that theres something very charming about the ridiculously low polygon count you only get in ff7, especially with the battles and magic spells like being trapped in a 5 polygon pyramid when u fight on of the turks. it doesnt age well but it doesnt age well in such a unique way

It’s funny you say the graphics are a sticking point for you, because back in 1997 I had never seen anything like it. The blocky characters never looked great, but they left something to the imagination, and the pre-rendered backgrounds were awesome. But what Square did better than anyone else were cut scenes. The commercials for this game were all CG cut scenes and it was so hype. It’s like video games were finally becoming movies, and this was my first JRPG so I had no clue what I was in for. Those cut scenes were little bite sized treats for progressing the story or beating a boss.

I did my own playthrough of OG FFVII mid-late 2023 myself. Even down to using 7th Heaven. Despite knowing the story, it clicked with me. I believe I can explain why the speed hack didn't work. It's the 60fps mod. That plus VSync prevents speed hack from working. Turning down to 30fps or original fps can make it work again. On PC, not having VSync has horrible screen tearing so I need it on. On Steam Deck OLED, 30fps and VSync only gets up to 3x speed, but that's all anyone needs unless you're at the final fight.

Tbh I find the argument of "x thing didn't age well" so weird, even more when it's about graphics. Like I get technology improves, things get better and easier to be accomplished. But I think it's like kinda any work of art, the way it is portrays something either the direction/style, the limitations of when it was made or whatever. I get that 3D games were a new thing back then and it probably would've been made completely different a few years later, but I also think it's a style that reflects the sprites from FFs that came before better than any style I've ever seen later. Anyway, sorry for the little rant for a point that was made so briefly, it's just that I simply don't get it that people don't play something because it "didn't age well" and videogames is the only media that saying this seems so widely accepted.

So my opinion comes from a JRPG fan who mostly just sticks around playing older titles from the PSone/PS2 era, only occasionally playing newer titles (although admittedly, not making enough time for them... who's got the time to complete an RPG these days?) By the way, if you enjoy Final Fantasy titles and even Xenogears, then I highly recommend The Legend of Dragoon, that one is very similar to Final Fantasy titles, more so than other JRPGs I think, to the point that it was criticized for it back in the day. It's got the pre-rendered backgrounds and 4 discs just like any Final Fantasy title, and these days it's a bit of a cult classic. It's consistently the best selling rerelease from the Playstation Classics library, and I would compare it to the likes of FF7 and FF9~ :V Anyway, back to FF7, I find it interesting how much the polygonal graphics and UI navigation was such a huge obstacle for you, and yet you were able to enjoy the remake just fine, despite the remake being dragged out significantly longer and having way more complex UI than the original, if you thought FF7's UI was difficult, you'd have a hell of a time with FF8 or Chrono Cross... then again, those games are gorgeous for PSone titles, so maybe you'd enjoy them despite the confusing UI. :P Also, those mods you applied are disgusting and grungy looking, I can't stand the AI upscale look, only true upscaling or recreating from scratch are acceptable to me personally, and I don't know how you thought that was easier to look at than the the original polygons... lol... maybe I'm just a stickler for the older style of graphics, but that's just my opinion~ Edit: Pro tip for newer players to FF7, if you set the battle speed to slow, set the ATB system to wait, and set all your characters to the back of the party instead of the front, the game becomes easy mode and you never have to grind out levels. It's a very common mistake new players will make where they set the battle speed to fast because they think it'll make the game go by faster, and while that's true, it doesn't really pause for your turn, even when the ATB is set to wait, so you're actually giving yourself a huge disadvantage against the CPU, and having all your party members stand in front because it deals more damage also makes you much more vulnerable, so that combined with the faster game speed means you're taking at least 4x as much damage as normal, which is why the game gets so difficult at times...

I know there’s ways to cheese them people have found all these years later, but I was able to do it in 1997 before we had access to that stuff. If I can do it, you can. I’m not great at games by any means

@@creativevisiongaming the move is materia spelled backwards. And I think it did around 1k for every materia you have equipped. So any character that has 9+ materia takes 9,999 dmg.

I like turnbased games, persona, smt, digimon cuber sleuth, dragon quest, but for sme reason I cannot click with final fantasy games pre 13. My first ff was 13 that is why I say it. I have constantly tried more than once to play 6,7,8,9,10 and 12, but I can’t jive with. I think it is the mindset that i am forcing myself to play these games because they are touted as classics and highly praised, but that mindset is like playing a game by obligation. Nobody like being obligated. So I olways end up stoping mid way. Last one was ff9 and tbh I actually enjoyed my time, but i stopped anyways. There are some aspects of old ff games that are just antiquated and not enjoyable. I love remake and the story and world of 7, yet I cannot get into the game no matter how much I try. I still wanna give 9 another round, just so I can be prepared for the suposed remake, and even if i never play the og, I’ll definitely play the remake.

I’m working on a retrospective on 7 for the same reasons. Took me 4 years to complete and also never played the game when I was a kid. Got into rpgs through PKMN but bravely default took my breath away

Should have just played the OG remastered for your first play through than mess around with all those mods. It's all about the story.. mostly. If you loved the story, then mess around with your mods for your second and third playthroughs.

Listening to character descriptions in this video really hit me hard. That how much of a snowflake people have become. People really became soft compared to the 90s didn't they? And this is coming from pathetic whiny millennial (me) Back in 90s, people loved Cloud, Cid, and Barrett BECAUSE they were a-holes. Tough mofos with confidence and they weren't afraid to hurt other people's feelings. Also Tifa saying little joke to Cloud that he is messed up became something offensive? We have come a long way haven't we? I mean at this point it was understood Cloud overcame his trauma and he became mentally strong. Which is why this joke worked. He was not supposed to be pitied. Not saying what right or wrong here. Just how much average perspective changed since 90s is astonishing.

This dude does not like ff7 og. If you have to force yourself to get through a game that much you don't like it plain and simple lol

How do you not love the characters and the world they inhabit? This game has one of the most settings, it's doesn't have a stupid alien sci-fi futuristic or medieval European settings. The setting is dark, industrial, broken and can actually exist. It's not over the top on designs.

Final fantasy games have an odd cycle with combat, it goes from simple and boring to pretty cool. If anything, I'd recommend trying out ffxiv, it follows the same principle but you'll have the added benefit of mutiplayer and it being closer to a action rpg

@@Jagarm87 I love turn based. I have played most SMT titles but ff7 isn't engaging and is repetitive with little strategy.

Totally fair man don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I’m in my 30s and grew up on old school FF and it’s my favorite game series of all time. The fact that you got in and found a game you liked and it clicked is the whole point man. You should really try rebirth whenever you get a chance.
