As soon as you mentioned phantasy star I knew where you were going: monster hunter's director explicitly said that the franchise as a whole is inspired by the philosophy of PS games, in which the main loop is get quest>complete an objective in a certain map>get back at the hub and improve your gear. I remember when my brother and I got into Monster Hunter Generations as our first MH game. Since we were both new to everything and agreed to not use any online resources, we had to learn together and work together to get through guild quests. It was fun having someone who knew a comparative amount to yourself rather than an experienced mentor because it meant that you could catch each other up to speed on what you discovered about the game and wonder about what will come ahead without anything to force you out of that sense. There were many hard lessons to be had, yes, but now that I've been continuing my journey for a good half-decade since, nothing can replicate what made those early days so special to me.
@blankcanvas335811 ай бұрын
It seems the consensus is that Monster Hunter is often rewarding for people who are patient and eager to learn. I did a lot of research online to better understand MHWorld because it looked interesting for my first game, which made it easier to understand than the in game tutorials. The big element may be something about having a person who’s been there sharing the experience, vs having the info dumped on you by the game’s recycled text made for everyone. Everyone has different learning curves and speeds too, so I’d call you especially lucky to have someone in person to answer your questions. It goes to show how even the best things need a good explanation before they are even considered as such.
@TanegiHoneydew11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that WAS how earlier Monster Hunter was meant to be played in Japan. You took your PSP out after school / after work and let your friends / your co-workers teach you how to hunt. It's almost like a subculture, and maybe it's still happening nowadays with ppl who play Rise on Switch too.
@blankcanvas335811 ай бұрын
Now that you mention it. That’s how it went in an episode of the anime Haikyuu. It’s usually about volleyball, but one time a guy tried to beat a monster in the game and the others took turns with different methods against it. I imagine they took inspiration from the fans experiences.

Man, this kind of story is just relatable to all of us, isn't it? I remember when I first got into Monster Hunter with 4u in like 2015 - 2016. I may have put in 20 or 30 hours trying to figure it out and it's not that I didn't like it but it didn't grab me enough to make me want to play it over any other game. So I put it on the back burner for months and then one day I decided to pick it up again and everything just clicked. Still don't know how or why lol but after that I proceeded to put in over 2,000 hours over two different save files and Monster Hunter became my favorite franchise ever. And I never looked back

I had this same experience. Years ago my brother, through a friend or on his own (idk), found monster hunter 3 ultimate's demo. I remember him showing me the game, then letting me try it. The first ever hunt I did was the demo lagombi hunt, and he and I both used dual blades because we didn't understand the concept of timing attacks. I just didn't get it. The combat was sluggish, and everything was confusing. My brother did though, and he ended up buying the game. He tried many times to get me to enjoy it, to the point it became annoying. I remember just wandering around the deserted island map and just getting bored out of my mind lol. I do remember my brother showing me a rathian for the first time, and even though he liked the game, rathian was still a very much out of his league, and it looking close to a typical dragon really made it seem like a super high level and hard enemy to my brother and I. Though, even with that, it just didn't click. Years later monster hunter 4 ultimate came out, and my brother bought the game right away. Of course, he asked me to play it. I told him I didn't care but he kept nagging. Eventually he told me if I tried the multiplayer that id enjoy it, and I agreed just so he'd shut up. I remember holding his old red 3ds and him putting me into a lobby with a bunch of randoms. They posted up a tetsucabra quest. I don't remember EXACTLY when it clicked, but I was fucking HOOKED. I played in that lobby for HOURS. I remember we eventually went up against a gore magala, and my child brain exploded as to me gore magala = dragon, and the thought of fighting a dragon as a noobie just made it feel so special. Anyways all that extra crap aside, I became hooked to monster hunter. I'm now way more into it than my brother, and have sunk thousands of hours into all the game collectively. This video of yours really just brought me back and I really appreciate that. Seeing as you're starting out with 4U, I can also suggest some reading materials. For starters, kiranico is great like you said, but the MH4U database app in the google playstore is also fantastic if you have an android phone. Super easy to use. Idk what id do without it. Second, Gaijin Hunter is a monster hunter youtuber that has some EXCELLENT guides for MH4U. Pretty much taught me how to play the game when I was new. And thirdly for entertainment the youtube channel NCHProductions makes super funny Monster hunter animations that also have useful information. Id suggest watching the sleep bombing or mounting etiquette video. Super good. Whatever the case excellent video. I hope it gains more traction. :^)

For me, one of the most annoying things about starting mh (3u and 4u, my first games) was the fact that you start on yellow sharpness but don't know what that exactly means. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to upgrade my weapon, but until you can do that, the constant bouncing and getting hit because of it is definitely rage inducing
@therighttrousers34311 ай бұрын
World was my first, and I enjoyed it well enough with Defender Dual Blades and Guardian gear sort of til about i think start of Iceborne but then I heard that it was already a thing, just a franchise I hadn't heard of and i was looking for more 3ds games so I got the 3ds quadrilogy and stuck on 4u before touching the others, cos it was already jumping at me with the kind of quality and characters that i was worried i wouldn't like the others as much. Which i don't and 3u's camera i hated at first but they showed me that they're great too. But yeah, 4u is the best original Xbox game might be a way I'd put it. The incredible colours, the beautiful but you can still see the limitations skybox and models, the tempo of the fights and controls. Like it's got what makes Rayman 3 and Sonic Heroes, the rhythmic beats, the colours, the weights, the aesthetics, the humour. I remember getting lost in area 2 while getting thrashed about by cats. And just gazing into the treeline of 4u. And you're totally right with the dark souls thing, the reason i moved onto switch axe in world was because it felt with its weighty smooth sword mode chops and the explosion stab like the moonlight greatsword of Bloodborne. I also appreciate the Rise recommendation, it's faster and the skill ceiling is the highest i think, frankly i put it in the same pace and complexity as Devil May Cry 5 and Nioh 2 but it's still an incredible game. My favourite I think, even though I've less hours in than 4u, and my favourite monsters are still in 4u. I like fast and flashy games! But even so i think any one of the core Monster Hunter games, least that I've played i know of, 3u or 4u with the immersive and close feel of the locales, or those locales where it opens up and you're thrown into somewhere vast and have to figure it out, and all the little things, some absolutely crucial, some just helping to do a tiny not-even-a-sidequest like whatever i needed the incredibly large aptonoth dung for in 3u, i don't remember. World with its cinematography and focus on environmental storytelling and endemic life, the pretty graphics make the entire thing a big James Cameron Avatar big Hollywood movie. GU and Sunbreak with the flashy supers and versatile movesets, plus even compared to the rest the number of high level monsters, the stuff you're wanting to fight most probably, is super high, and failing that the low levels have endgame gimmick versions that push them into difficult territory. If you want lots of fights here you go. And none of them are particularly lacking in what i consider the others' specialties, course, neither. 3u might be simple compared to Rise/Sunbreak but you better inow what you're doing also. And there's plenty of fights too. And it's still pretty if you can rock with the comparatively muted palette, especially versus 4u. And they all have their own senses of humour and different but still engaging characters. The enthusiatic about monsters guildmarm, the seeking to put her town on the map Bherna Gal, the arrogant but ineffectual hell hunters, that one cat that keeps forgetting to make the obligatory cat puns. I consider any one of them childhood material. Like you could play them after school or on summer holidays for years upon years still discovering things from What Felvine Does, or What Do Torches Do to Weapons Have Sweet Spots, and Impact Phial Explosions And Gunlance Explosions Disregard Hitzones. Took me long enough to learn then subsequently do Guard Points, and i just know somewhere out there in someone's copy of 4u is tucked either a sticky note or a printed out gameFAQs kinsect tree.

I had a similar experience where I really bounced off of 4U, stopped trying for a while, then picked up Generations which became a vehicle to bond with my now-girlfriend of 8 years. She's a lifetime hammer user, and I'm an insect glaive gal at heart, so we were able to get around our initial lack of skill by using mounts and stuns to give eachother time to just wail on the monster. We both just solo everything now, but I still love watching her pulverize stuff and I still send her my goofy IG killscreens. Basically I'm saying a monster hunter lobby is actually an ideal date if you're both the right kind of sicko.

All weapons are viable, some are just easier to use then others. Just like dark souls, your longsword will carry you through the whole game, just gotta remember to get it upgraded. :)

My experience getting into Monster Hunter wasn't as bad, but it was similar. I picked up Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii and it was the first game with third person combat I ever really played and I knew nobody who played it. I'm surprised I even found it in a toy store of a small village back when Monster Hunter wasn't popular at all. I couldn't beat the first big monster the great jaggi. I was fighting it for a really long time, getting hit a lot and I felt like I wasn't making any progress. I stopped playing for a while, but the game did seem really interesting so I wanted to try again. I found some videos from an experienced player who explained in a lot of detail how to fight the monsters and it finally clicked. Then I fell in love with the game.
@CaptainEffort11 ай бұрын
I’ve actually got a similar experience, as Tri was my first MH entry too! My dad always prided himself on his ability to research the best games, no matter how niche, and get them for my brother and I on birthdays and holidays and stuff. So that year he got me Tri with an included Classic Controller. I struggled, got bodied by Great Jaggi, but as a kid I found I just enjoyed running around Moga Woods collecting things and hunting Jaggi and Jaggia. I was content, but a little frustrated that I couldn’t progress. So eventually I quit. A year or so later I picked it back up and beat Great Jaggi! But… I got stuck on Qurupeco. So I quit again. Then another year passes, I pick it up again, and beat Qurupeco! Only to get stuck on Barroth. Another year passes and I beat Barroth! But Gobul becomes a hard wall for me, and I give up on the game for multiple years. Finally, years after, I played the demo for 3U and loved it! So I picked up the game, even picking up 4U along with it! And this time it fully clicked, sinking hundreds of hours into each of them. Ever since I’ve been a diehard fan, even playing entries like P3rd and Dos. I actually returned to Tri last year and loved it! I even prefer it in a lot of ways to 3U.

MHW was my first MH game and man I really didn't expect it to be one of my favourite so fast. I mean, I literally just downloaded and played it because my friend had it steam shared with me. I went in with 0 knowledge about previous games and I'm glad to say that i recently clocked in over 140+ hrs over the next two weeks of playing this game! It's amazing how in hindsight, the map areas are kinda small in comparison to other games and within these areas would our the majority of hunting and gathering take place . Yet they surprisingly never seem to bore you despite everything! Probably because the environment are so well made but also the fact that the environment helps with the gameplay aswell!

Same here except my experience with World was kinda weird. I didn’t understand a lick of what was going on and I couldn’t play it for long because it was during the time it was about to leave xbox gamepass (and the xbox I have now belonged to someone else so I wasn’t gonna buy anything on it at that point in time). All I knew was that I was having fun and cool armor=better stats. And then later when Rise came out things started clicking faster and faster. I realize what makes the games so lovable, satisfying interactions, cool monsters and a feeling of gratification everytime you annihilate a monster. Eventually I bought worldborne and playing and learning Rise made playing world way more fun.

I remember I downloaded the 3DS 4U demo back in ye olden times without knowing anything about the series just because it looked cool... and I hated it after 10 mins and never touched it again. Years later I got World (not remembering 4U at all) and did have fun and got some hours out of it but didn't really understand how to play right and hit a wall pretty early on (low rank) and stopped playing. Something about it though just really stuck with me. I got GU on switch... and died to the practice arena bird wyvern. And stopped playing 😅 I just really thought the games were not for me and I was sad about it because the idea of the games were so compelling. When Rise came out I was still really wanting to get into the series so I bought it..... and it clicked. and it clicked HARD. I have 500 hours in that game, killed every monster, built every single armor set. And then I went back and suddenly every other game that I had bounced off of clicked as well. I've now played every generation of MH, and even just recently for the #ReturnToWorld campaign decided to try chargeblade, a weapon I was too intimidated to use, and it's now become my favorite weapon in the series. Monster Hunter is my favorite game series of all time, I'm glad I managed to break through and experience it.

Like many hunters, i can totally relate to this. Years ago, in 2013 maybe, i tried the demo for 3 Ultimate on my 3DS, and i was like "What is this sh*t ? It's slow and unplayable." Then in 2015, a friend of mine (who's a lingtime fan of the series) bought me 4 Ultimate, and i tried it extendedly. And it finally clicked. After trying a few other games though, i'd say 4U is the most likely to get you into the series without outside help. Even though the Caravaneer can be annoying at times, he explains a lot of important stuff to you, that is sometimes not even mentionned in other games of the series. The game also has the best story out of all MH games by a long marging. So even if you struggle a bit with your weapon and some monsters during the first few hours, you'll eventually want to stick around for the narrative and atmosphere of the game.

I really hope they somehow fix the tutorials in Wilds. It somehow simultaneously has what feels like 50 different deep interlocking systems, but shortcuts to skip a lot of them and/or ignore them, especially in the beginning. Somehow it rarely tells you about the shortcuts, but you get just enough explanation to confuse you. Not enough to really understand it tho. It's a shame the answer to "What weapon do I want to play and how do I play it?" is almost always answered with: "Look up *MHKZbinr* and watch their tutorial", instead of having a good tutorial.

"too many items" read descriptions "and you dont know what those items are used for" *READ THE DESCRIPTIONS* i swear, people just dont read item descriptions, its not even just a monster hunter thing, its all over multiplayer games, I dont understand what the problem is, most of the time the description tells you what its for I will however say that the weapons usually arent quite explained well enough, I always look up a weapon guide to ensure I learn a weapon beyond its absolute basics. had no idea gunlance's full-bursts existed till I watched a guide.

Monster Hunter World was specifically designed for new players to get into. I never got into the other games for the same reason you did. World not only is "easier" by way of streamlining grinding but is actually eases new players into mechanics and how each weapons functions. The upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds Wilds is going to be more of World in terms of design and ease of entry. If you have a firend each of you pick up a copy and get ready for Wilds. Also Jokes on you. You can't be in my walls because it outside as I'm writing this comment. 😌

monster hunter is a pain in the ASS with its explanations. if it wasnt for the demo for rise, i would've never gotten into it. but i think the demo was a perfect way to demonstrate the gameplay without the baggage. also - please make more videos! you have earned a subscriber. you have good music taste too lol (mother 3). the only thing id recommend is you raise the volume, and ABSOLUTELY make sure no audio is louder than your voice. there are some jumps to loud audio on this video and they are jarring because your voice is so quiet by comparison.

putting at least 600hrs on each game in series, I can only say this game has sokethimg special that others dont, especially old monster hunter games, it didnt have a good tutorial, it didnt even show what to do to progress, but somehow it got me hooked, it gave me a gameplay loop that I can keep come back to These games has a lot of mechanics hidden, like how the old monster hunter apparently has dragon attribute on their physical attacks and having negative resistance makes you take huge damage from it. It keeps engaged learning that there might be more things to discover, crafting weapons and armors along the way

I actually do not suggest that you start with a faster paced monster hunter title, as a veteran myself. The earlier PSP titles themselves can be pretty easy to play and experience, as long as you are willing to look for gathering spots yourself. The fights and quests themselves are also slow enough in the beginning and tend to ramp up in difficulty just enough so that you can find time to practice.
@CeaEva11 ай бұрын
I feel 4U is like this too, for me at least, mabye not for others, but with my limited knowledge I thought it was mabye a good starting point.
@CaptainEffort11 ай бұрын
Maybe? I love FU, but so many things in that game make it inaccessible to new players, from wonky hitboxes to the lack of a button prompt when near gathering spots. It’s not an easy game for new players imo. Even the lack of item icons in your inventory is a noticeable downgrade, and makes learning items quite a bit harder for those unfamiliar with them. If someone were dead set on starting with a PSP entry, I’d actually recommend P3rd. It’s not as easy to acquire, but it fixes the issues I listed above and loads of others. Plus it’s a lot simpler and easier, making it a better starting point imo. But truthfully, I still think 4U is the best starting point. It’s faster than the psp titles, yes, but not so much so that the psp titles become impossible to get into. It’s not like starting with World or Rise where the older games will feel too sluggish to play. 4U is perfect as it’s still accessible, and doesn’t make any other entries feel too different to get into. It’s the perfect middle ground imo.
