I’ve been going back and replaying older games I missed out on through virtual console releases (legal ones and slightly less so) and your point about thinking a badge quest wouldn’t be something you’d ever have the patience for but ended up doing really gets me curious. It’s not the same as a full odd hunt, of course, but I’ve been getting hooked into more and more shiny hunting methods, starting with Emerald RNG manipulation, then a cute charm save file, then chain fishing, then radar hunting, and seeing how much fun you had on your journey makes it sound far less draining than I thought it’d be. (I’m currently defying coding and fate and everything I can to manifest a legal shiny Jirachi solely through ACE)

Honestly rng manip is something I'd love to learn how to do is I see it done on Emerald ALLLLL the time. One of the coolest ways to get a shiny since it takes such a deep knowledge of how the code itself works. But don't be afraid to try other methods too !

The irony that I'm watching this while shiny hunting (phasing male Camerupts looking for a female) I never got into the random encounter or masuda method for hunting, but SOS chaining, soft resetting (on DS,) Mass Outbreaks and Massive Mass Outbreaks being so much more inclusive in what you do is so much more fun imo. Of course, my opinion might change after I finish my main goal (full OT living form dex) but having that goal, every hunt brings me that one extra mon closer, my phases can be exactly what I want or something completely different that I still need and haven't thought of going for just yet. I have more than 500 unique mons/forms available, and it's taken me more than a year to get this far. Personally I never use sandwiches in outbreaks unless I'm looking for 3+ of that mon, or a rare gender

ngl i loved shiny hunting during the ds/3ds era. after that..they became a bit too easy to get so I stopped around sm haha. i agreed coz full odd shiny hunts is way better. i rly love the radar in dppt. i mastered it and caught over 100 shinies using it also the shiny haxorus i encountered... i actually saw a shiny noctowl in that area. it was back to back..i wondered if my game was glitched XD but it wasnt haha

Ah, I thought the odds were extremely high in Outbreaks so I didn't even care that much that I got a shiny Rookidee in my first 3 hours of Violet. That was my first and only Rookidee during the outbreak and I was capturing a Skiddo at the time and saw the yellow bastard walking by > Oh is that a shiny? > "Did you know that Skiddo- > I don't care > "Do you wanna give it a nickn-" > No! > "Dandy (Quaxly) is evolving!" > PLEASE STOP! THE BIRB IS RUNNING AWAY! Then I promply boxed it cuz I already had a flying mon I liked more lol Eventually started using it since I learned it turns into Corviknight (never played Gen 8) But yeah, while I did used some methods in past games to get shinies of a few mons I really like, having finished 5 pre-6thGen games + their postgame without seeing a single shiny really does hammer a deep nail in how much I don't enjoy the process. I prefer to shiny hunt only for mons I really like, and I'd take every boost I could get without cheating. The ones I specifically hunted for were Beldum in Moon, Eevee in Alpha Sapphire and Ralts in Legends Arceus. My first shiny was a full odds Horsea in Y, which I nearly screamed mid-classrom break.

Full odds shiny hunting is amazing but with my abysmal luck i need the charm to get a shiny in a reasonable timeframe. 8 months, 800h+ 24k srs for starter fennekin in X(no charm). 11 months, 1300h+ 16847srs for story latias in AS(still hunting, without charm), 24k+ random encounters in X for a honedge(no phases) and got a nincada(moved on because it was a shiny badge quest, without charm). 22k masuda eggs with charm without getting the shiny in usum and so so many more insanely overodds hunts and all on a single console. Im planning to do a shiny only nuzlocke of ultra moon but i have to get a shiny every single route. Ill most likely get charm on that file(you can get it near the end of 2nd island via tranfersing mons over) just so i can make progress and not be stuck on that single save for 5 years(considering my full odds luck lol) No hate to full odds or charm and methods hunting, people are different and find different things more fun. I hope you keep hunting and keep having fun while hunting

Oh I have nothing against the charm in the slightest, it's all preference at the end of the day. I just get the biggest thrill of full odds hunting even if it takes a LONG while. And i do need to hunt in older games with 1/8192 odds for my shiny living dex like mew, celebi etc. Those hunts i mentioned above were in gen 6 and 7 so 1/4096 odds so you csn imsgine how long the older games will take

also in addition to your "gen 2 shinies segment" if someone doesn't know: the odd egg in japanese copies of crystal were only available via distribution using mobile gb adapter that has been discontinued. therefore getting an odd egg in jpn Crystal nowadays is impossible (unless I missed some obscure reddit post of someone adding somehow obtained backup of mobile gb distributions into the game)

my first galar hunt with the shiny charm was wooloo and I went over 1500 encounters for it. Then my first masuda hunt went over 1000 eggs. Immediately after my shiny hatched I found two shinies in the grass within ten minutes of eachother.

I really got into shiny hunting when i randomly found a shiny staravia in platinum. after that, I wanted to try it for myself and did my first true hunt in x via masuda method for pansear. Which i got in 15 eggs without the charm. But I don't like full odds hunting at all. Some say its more rewarding but I've tried twice with that brilliant aura method in swsh and its not for me. Props to those who can but it kinda annoys me when people say those shines hunted with methods aren't special.

Gens 3-5 were peak. Though Gen 7 did a great job as far as 3D titles go. From presentation to content Alola and Hoenn Remakes were vibrant, interesting, and some of the last games to ve able to literally house every pokemon up to that point. Pokemon Lets Go P/E, while not fantastic games themselves, were super polished graphically. It has such a consistent and clean execution that has yet to be seen on switch since. Does Sword and Shield have a more grandiose and cooler sport-based graphic design? Hell yeah it does. But the consistency is all over the place. SwSh is cooler, but LGPE is the most graphically polished pokemon switch game to release.

I've always hunted in 1/8192, i tried shiny hunting in new games but i think the rates make the shiny meaningless (got 4 full odds, and 400+ in Violet and Arceus...) Edit : i agree, ds capture cards are too expensive 😞, sticking on camera too. Also i love to watch absolblog or others while i hunt, it's so entertaining

For some reason my 1/8192 luck is rock bottom. Still 20,000+ on Gold, that is why I avoid 8192 hunts. I can get back to back 1/1365 or 512, but never 8192. I understand it's rng and my perspective is probably low because of my luck, but if I can get some DS games, I would love to try 8192 on a gen 5 game or HGSS someday. My lower odds luck is crazy though, I found 6 friend safari shinies under 1500 RE recently, my luck makes no sense.

Well the lower the odds the better? I mean rng is a fickle thing and can either work in your favor... or you are standing in the odds for a very long time. Whatever gives YOU the most joy is the method you should do.
