Hi Emma Jane, I live in Massachusetts. I am so excited to have found your water color videos. I am a 68 yr old grandma and decided it’s never to old to try something new! I wanted to try a new hobby. I tried painting some flowers & instantly fell in love with painting, but I need some proper supplies. ! I find it incredibly peaceful & relaxing and it fills me up with joy! I love your easygoing manner and you explain things in a way that are easy for me to follow & understand! You are a wonderful teacher. I am so happy to have found your “ getting started with watercolor video” today, before I attempt any more painting! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent freely with others! Iris

I agree with you 💯 on paper. When I got my first 100% cotton watercolor paper, even my bad paintings looked a ton better! I was so scared to paint though cuz I didn’t want to waste the paper (aka make mistakes) but I did and it was great and now I’m obsessed. I still use cheaper paper for practice though. When I see people on KZbin using arches to just show color swatches, I’m like dang, they are rich! LOL 🤣

Paper: I own Arches, and yes, it's AWESOME! That said, I rarely use it because of the price. I save it for paintings I have ALREADY done on Canson watercolor paper, but LOVE and want to paint on the "good stuff" (which is what I call my Arches paper, LOL). Just a tip for any beginners out there! 😊

Cut each sheet in half and yes, you can paint on both sides. You can get 48 6x9 paintings out of a single 9x12 pad that way. You can also buy a full sheet and cut them down, you can get 16 5x7 sheets from a single full sheet.

I'm 1/2 way through your video and had to stop & post. I'm new to watercolor and after watching zillions of YT videos and not having any "hoarder" control, I SO appreciate you telling people to take it slow on paints. I'm just starting to paint, but have so many paints/brands/palettes, I don't know if I will ever use them all. If paints never go bad, I'm probably set for the remaining 30-40 yrs of my life & hopefully will be able to pass them down when I'm dead.

Tubes do go bad, so if you are not using them quickly pans are better. Tubes are more economical though.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but you can always paint on both sides of good quality paper, so you get two bites at the cherry, so to speak. I have even sold paintings where the first side was less than good, painted another one on the other side, and then forgotten I’d done that, and sold the second one. So someone got two for the price of one! You can also often wash the paint off of good paper if you go wrong, especially if you’ve stretched it first.

Agree 100% on the Arches paper. I also have other paper that I use for practice, but it is of lesser quality: Canson, Strathmore, and Grümbacher. My paint palette is a mixture of paints I have collected over time and I actually have two palettes going, one strictly with pastels or lighter colors and one with more traditional colors. I have favorite colors from Winsor Newton, both Cotman and professional, Daniel Smith, Grümbacher, and a couple others. I have yet to purchase the Snap brushes, but they are on my list, I just have so many other brushes that I enjoy using.

Woohoo!! I'm so looking forward to this series. I have Master's Touch that I've been playing with and when it dries in the trays, a day or two later areas where I've mixed the paint it flakes off and I end up having to blow the flakes off so I don't get strange colors. I have a White Knight 12 paint set that I despise because they don't include a violet and you cannot make one with the colors provided. (This was the straw that broke the camel's back and I packed up my painting supplies for 7 years.) After watching a gazillion videos on color theory it was finally revealed that it has to do with the warm/cool palettes. Someone gave me some Arteza 60 paints for my birthday that I've never used except to swatch. Once I start learning something and can paint something ok then I will get into them. I already put them in palettes and they are pretty much solid. Thank you for the new series. ♥♥♥
@nalcarya3 жыл бұрын
White Night colors are professional grade quality and you can get them in single pans - so you could just get the magenta or ultramarine color you are missing to make vibrant purples or violets, or use such a color from the Arteza set with them :)

Nice!! I started in a watercolor class in college 14 years ago (I was in Nursing school but wanted to start a hobby) . Our instructor had us buy THE most expensive paints! (One tube of DaVinci Cad Yellow was $15!!) Anyway, I got a Michael’s gift card for Christmas, so I bought their line. 36 colors of Artists Loft for $7.99! (Same as you did initially?) Anyway, they seem not too different from some of my DaVinci’s. (They ARE old tho) I also have two huge books of Canson XL mixed media paper. I am a papercrafter so plan to use most of my pieces on cards. So looking forward to more of your great tips !! TFS!!🥰

Ok...I know this is an older video...but I was given a gift card for Amazon for art supplies...but had to buy a little gift for my husband and son, couldn't help it. But then was agonizing over which brush and if I could afford nice paper...gosh its expensive 😥 I've seriously been agonizing for a week or more. Feeling crazy guilty to use it on something like this for myself. I really really wanted to try the Princeton Heritage #12 or #16 because I think I'll like something a tiny bit softer but with snap..but...couldn't afford it. So, I literally just now bit the bullet and clicked the place order button for a pad of Arches cold press (I've been slowly teaching myself in my 40's and just using canson paper, which I'll still use for practice) and the #12 snap brush. One day I'll hopefully be able to try the Heritage...its so hard because normal people can't just buy one of all the types to see what we like...but...I'm excited to try this. I'm also now feeling my heart pound and a bit nauseous with anxiety over spending that on myself....🤦🏼♀️ well....its done. So...hopefully the anxiety will go away so I can sleep😬😁 I thought I saw different brushes in another video...hopefully you still think this is a good brush 😲 I guess I'll see :) Great video as always. And its why I bought the cheaper brush so that I could get the paper since its the important part. But I'm very thankful for all my canson paper because even getting that was a struggle financially sadly, and if I had thought I had to have expensive paper I'd not have even been able to try watercolor and fall in love with it :) art is a absolute life saver!! Thanks again!! :)

Hi Emma! Always love your videos and learn so much!! I recently discovered water soluble graphite pencils to draw or trace what I want to paint. I was wondering if you have tried them. I find that they work, but you still have to erase much of the graphite or it will alter the color of paint you're using, particularly if it's a light color. Would love to hear your thoughts.

This was great 👍🏻 except I have and use completely different product for everything lol. The only thing I have that was mentioned was the Canson paper lol, it was given to me. I’ve been doing water colour since spring of 2020, and self taught my self. I’m tossing around the idea of selling my work going into this year, any advice? Other then paper lol (I don’t use the canson paper a lot right now at this moment it’s all I have lol, and I’d like to “practice” more before I feel more confident about selling my work) any advice in that area you could give would be so great, I really enjoy your videos and found you a few months ago, since watching my work improved a ton!

I watched part 3 first and am happy I did. It does a great job of demonstrating why paper is so important. I started with Canson and also bought Fabriano. Looking forward to trying Arches. My guess is that i will need to learn how to use it. I have developed habits to compensate for how water behaves with Canson. The most difficult being how paint lifts when you try to layer. I have learned that different brands and colors react differently to layers.

Wanted to share something I tried with my cheap student tube set. The first time I tried leaving the paint in the palette to dry it cracked horribly and fell apart. This time I tried mixing in a couple of drops of glycerin (from the pharmacy) with the paint and it's much better! Still a tiny bit of cracking, but that could be just needing more experimenting with the ratios.

Hi Emma I have a question ⁉️ Have you ever tried a watercolor paper called Stonehenge made by Legion? It's 💯 percent 140 LB cotton coldpress? I paid 16.00 at amazon 9in x 12in, 15 sheets. It's on a block and the paper is really good. Oh and it's 🤍 white. I guess it is a little bit more money than the bee paper and by the way I love that paper, but it's worth the money if you can't find any reasonable priced paper for a time. I like the block idea because I don't have to tape it down, it doesn't buckle when wet, and you section it off with tape then cut it when done. Thought I'd let you know. 😊🌞🌴🇺🇸 FLORIDA.
