This is so awesome for someone wanting to learn. And so much more affordable than even 7 to 8 years ago. It is invaluable to see how and with what to start with. Would have saved me at least a year . Thanks Marty.

Many years ago, more than 40, at least, I lived in Ohio. There was a 5 and dime store which sold mostly cheap, stuff, targeting children. That store eventually closed and a local artist moved in. I don't recall if he offered classes; but, he did provide good feedback to any question that I asked. He listed very similar things to the ones that you listed in this video. I started drawing before I ever considered painting. I drew on paper bags, typing paper, even notebook paper. Remember Keds tennis shoes? They were made of canvas. I drew on them. A piece of paper did not have to be blank for me to draw on it. Usually, there were some blank areas. I can draw really small if I need to do so.

Hi Donna - Thank you for this. What a great recounting of a situation that obviously impacted you, because you still remembered and you drew on anything you could. That's really the simple joy of creating art. Have a fantastic day my friend.

Oh I love this video. It’s one of your all time best. The exercises are great! I haven’t got out my paints since I saw the menu and you got me wanting to get them out again! (Well my watercolor pencils.)

Hi Marty, çongratulations on a kind, non -prescriptive beginners video making some very important points about materials. Can I add one more recommendation ? What I call a "secret scribbler" being the cheapest paper block you can find for ideas/doodles/practices/repetitions. This is not to be shown to others. I reckon this is freeing and valuable for everyone. Many thanks.

One of my sons moved home. Had to consolidate my crafting area. It's a disaster. Going to go in there, clear a space, and recreate your sketchbook start. The simplicity of it will go a long way to calming my frazzled nerves. Thank you so much for posting this.

Congrats on your son coming home. I love it when my kids come home for the summer from college. I miss them terribly. Hey that sounds like a solid plan and let me know if you have any questions or if I can help out in any way with your sketchbook making. I'm not an expert, but I learned a few things. ;-) Have a great day!

Great intro to supplies and techniques. I often have trouble with water control with waterbrushes. It's always a bit runny (maybe I squeeze too hard). I tend to just take a little water bottle and regular brushes. Not a knock, just my problem.

Hi John - That’s not a problem, just a good solution for you. It’s good to use the tools that work for you. Thanks for watching and for the comment! Hope you’re doing well.
