Older bass player here and I am actually going through this right now! Just had my first lesson and I am embarrassed by my lack of knowledge of the fretboard. Getting back to those fundamentals that i skipped over the years. I will put this technique into my tool box. Thanks!

Really enjoyed this lesson Grant! At 43 (not that I old I guess?), I didn't want to rely on shapes and tabs more than I needed to and knew that fretboard knowledge could be the difference between an average bassist and a great one. Will give your advice and approach a try for sure!

As someone who has had the same experience as yourself, you are spot on. A lot of the students I have encountered know box shapes but they don’t know what the notes are. I agree that knowing the notes and where they are will unlock a ton of possibilities in and out of practice.

Definitely an older bassist here (62+). Too preoccupied with learning shapes and reading TABS and forgetting basics. This is my new project and my focus - thanks for the direction.

One of the best things a bass player can do is learn to read bass clef. It’s not as hard as many make it out to be. That will help a bassist learn the notes on the fretboard, the key of the song, and enhance your ability to play orchestrated music with other musicians and instruments.

Recognized that this is super important from the very beginning. So much so, that I now put masking tape over the tabs on sheet music and have gone back through earlier material and played exercises at different octaves or on alternate strings.

Learning the dots on the E and A strings works well to quickly identify the in-between notes and the Octaves on the other strings. I also noticed from the E to G strings are 4 intervals between each string and from G back to E strings are 5 intervals between each string. Perhaps that may help to continue expanding fretboard knowledge.

Tip: use your tune pedal to learn them WHILE you sing the note! Singing, for sure, it's the best way to learn them (I can't remember the notes but I remember the sounds lol). What would you think of someone who learnt all the theory but long-term memory just can't get it? I'm so bad remembering things I read but I can remember things I see / listen to. Like, I don't remember the notes… But I can point them on the bass if I listen it. I'm one of those that has the auditive / visual skill. Same way as gipsy here play guitar but don't give a f* on notes, yeah I'm on the same boat. I will try again with yout trick. This will be like the 20th time I memorize them (hope I don't forget again).

Guess I’m the exception. I would fall asleep with the bass on top of me going up and down a string at a time just calling out the notes and making sure I fretted properly. In college I found out getting a book on sex from the library when you’re in puberty is weird. I read it twice.

I think tab would be so much more educational if it had note letters instead of fret numbers (with apostrophes from the 12th and up e.g. E E' E"). We'd get used to it quicker than we'd expect.
