I'm 51 & I've been sewing since before I was old enough for school. I love sewing, the whole creative subject, but I hated how some people saw sewing as just repairs & beneath them, so I stopped sewing for others. IMHO it's a basic life skill that everyone should learn; like boiling an egg, swapping a light bulb or changing a tyre. My mother didn't sew either, so it's not something you have to have handed down, you *can* learn & each step is easily learned. My 25yo split his pants at work recently & he took such pride in telling me how he'd patched them up in the store-room & it was a much easier task than he'd thought. I agreed & said it is a skill that he will continue to find useful. While doing laundry, I noticed his hems had also fallen down & been trampled, so once laundered, I told him to iron the wrinkles out of the hems & I'd teach him invisible hemming. It took only a few demonstration stitches before he took over, repairing them himself & that achievement was surprisingly positive for his self-esteem. You should learn too. Good luck!

Eeee!!!! I will start this in the new year, after the craziness of christmas is over. As a larger woman, with menopause being able to adjust and refashion my clothes to something that fits, looks good, and lets me stay cool so I don't have power surge to death - I'm up for it. Also - you had me at learning to thread my machine. (I've been sewing by hand because I couldn't work out how to do that).

I used to sew everything by hand because I didn't have a sewing machine. I did it on and off since I was 7 or 8 year old, for my dolls; then as a teenager, I sew simple blouses with wide sleeves like bells (2000's makes 70's); then, as a mother, costumes (you know, Cinderella, Merida, Snow White, Ariel, etc.) as well as some gifts for nieces and nephews. They were very well recieved because they were handmade. I felt so silly and poor, but those where made with so much love and care and detail that family always felt so special because of it. Then, at 35 or so, I finally got my machine! I was so excited, I looked for tutorials about how it worked, even before it arrived! Then, it was so weird. It ran so fast that it looked like I was racing against it for the fabric! Hahahaha! I felt like it was just too difficult and that I would end up giving up on it. But I kept going and little by little I got better. Now I wish I had more time and energy to sew more often. You'll see you getting better, you'll see. Keep going and enjoy those moments where you accomplish a nice hem, a perfect dart, or a simple straight line. When you get to where you want to be, you'll fell like you conquered the world!!

How to thread your machine should be in your sewing machine manual. If you can no longer find your original manual, most sewing machine companies have all of their past manuals online now. I recently got a copy of one for one of my machines made in the early 60s.

@@joannecarroll5504 Even following the manual's explanation of how to thread my machine did not work. Either they skipped things they thought everyone understood (and therefore didn't need to say) or I simply couldn't understand what they meant, it took a friend of mine to show me how to get the bobbin thread up above the plate. (I had assumed it was up to me to somehow thread the thread up from the bobbin. AS hard as I tried, I simply could not do that. I had no idea the needle would pull it up as I tuned the hand wheel.)

You said that so well. I began sewing when I was young. My mother showed me how to make doll clothes. My projects looked terrible next to hers but I kept trying. In school I learned how to make a skirt, install a zipper, etc. Since then I have continued to increase skills . Now I am old and still learning. This was a very important discussion. Thank you.

This past month I the sewing school has given me the legitimization to learn at my pace and practice without falling behind! The group of “cheerleaders “ sewing together is addictive and you are at the helm, always encouraging and opening up my eyes to knew ways of looking at things. I loved the "make do and mend" approach that was so important during the war years. As you have already stated, reusing and refashioning has been around for hundreds of years, and every garment you refashion is one less item going to landfill.

OMG I am sooooo interested in all of these things! I actually find it difficult to find good sewing classes that actually correspond to what I want to learn and that are not just ok here is how you do a skirt, here is how you do a dress, etc., etc. A community of sewists available almost 24/7 is exactly what I was looking for. I realize you posted this a couple of years ago but I just LOVE how you teach. I have been sewing since I was 11 (I'm almost 68). But I want to get better. For the last 15-20 years I have been cleaning houses and caregiving an elderly woman. With COPD emphysema and heart problems it is getting more difficult to do the work I do. So I'm thinking ahead of maybe making garments for people or alterations. ..that sort of thing!!! This is funny! Literally the day I signed up for your sewing school August 2021 I got a message from my daughter's friend asking if she could hire me to put pockets in her ready made dress. I said, "yes!" Oh, if I just had more time!!! I am finishing a sweater refashion right now, but would love to be part of the community.....sewing is my creative outlet! Oh, and I have only made 3 things using a pattern, it always seem like a lot longer way than refashioning. I only machine sew when necessary, hand sewing during a movie with my sweet hubby is the best of both worlds! Happy times, remind me of mending/sewing and shopping/looking with my grandmother! We would go to antique stores and peek inside and feel all the garments to see how they were made or go to high end stores and do the same thing, then go to thrift stores and get something to refashion. I can still feel cashmere without a label and I am warm and comfy while keeping in budget and out of landfills. Keep up all your great work, wish I could join up!

I am brand new here to your page. I live your creativity. I just got a vintage sewing machine. Exactally like the one I bought in 1976- only so much ni c er! I have a project I am thinking m g about. Eithout spending a dime...I want to use a soft vintage shawl - my hubby bought me in Isreal and turn it into a simple book skirt with a fringed hemline. Only thing I will need to create are seam pockets. No problem, right. This skirt should end up * not too full but not too tight. It should be plenty long. I am hopeful. I think I will wear this alot more than the shawl route. Wish me luck.

Evelyn, this is incredible what you are doing. Teaching people how to sew and the art of garment construction. Sewing was once the foundation of homes, families and society in the U.S. and aboard then things changed. Women began to feel sewing was too domestic and therefore beneath them. A downward spiral resulting from the Women's Right Movement only to be exacerbated with the closing of many textile factories and companies. My mother taught me how to sew when I was a girl and one of the things instilled was sewing could not just be used to make your own clothes, but also as a way to make income. I have had people actually say to me, "You sew?!" like it is something incredibly foreign, some old pastime. Others when they see what I am wearing or discover I sew are astonished. I adore vintage clothing, but I also adore making my own clothes; vintage and modern. Thank you for keeping this skill alive to be passed on to the next generation of seamstresses and designers.

that explains a lot about the ongoing war between me and patterns. I wear a size 22 but I have a 24 inch inseam and my waist is located somewhere around the sleeve on the patterns. I use the old try it on. pin it up. cut it down repeat about eleventeen times until it's "close enough".

This sounds interesting, though for me shirt making would be much more useful than dress making. I do enjoy learning vintage skills, and using vintage things. I mow my yard with a scythe, write with fountain pens, and have done a little weaving. A few years ago I took an intro to blacksmithing class and made a three hook wall rack with a hammer, anvil, and coal forge. A while back I started collecting vintage sewing machines, even though I didn't sew. I intended to learn to repair them, which I haven't gotten around to yet. I do have a couple of functional vintage machines, and one modern industrial machine. Modern domestic machines have too much plastic in them for my taste. Looking for things to use them for, I've done a little bit of quilt block piecing. But it's too hot for quilts in Texas most of the year. Learning to make shirts that fit me well would be a very helpful skill. With my odd proportions, I never find shirts off the rack that fit me well all over.

I just found you and immediately subscribed! I love vintage clothing! Almost all my clothes is from charity shops and I'm always altering things. I love period clothing too and I'm about to start getting more into that. Patterns have always eluded me and I'm hoping to get my head around it eventually, but in the meantime I'm concentrating on studying existing garments/clothing items that I can alter and adapt. Really enjoyed you course on making the bag so can not wait to learn more in the new year when I enrol. Learning how to adjust clothes/patterns to fit me will be amazing as I would love to wear a dress as currently I am unable to because I am about 2 sizes bigger on my bust to my waist lol. I really need to learn how to measure myself correctly. In the course will you be showing how to create the basic blouse / skirt blocks for our own measurements and how to more darts etc to make different styles or will this be something for future courses.

Wow ! This is exactly what i'm looking for;) I had bad experience in looking for someone to learn to sew. I was in a course where the teacher refused to take my measurements for the pattern. She said it was 'standard', it was not, it as x-large on me. Looking to join in 2020 ;)))

So agree with a pattern just being a tool. It sometimes really annoys me when people moan about pattern instructions not spelling out every little detail. Once you have learned the skills, you can apply them to any sewing project. I think good drafting is so much more important. Give me the suggested order of construction and only details if there are unusual design details. Apperently that’s oldfashioned or as you now labled it vintage. Let me shout out with you: It’s liberating!

As a medical student I tend to cringe really hard when I see untidy sutures. Not to mention that I use a lot of suture knots to finish off my thread! Big huray for sewing!

@@luciatat4084 it is weirdly smooth. Like it stretches weird but its not thought to sew through like leather because the needles are very sharp. Sometimes though it's kind of tough to sew through on some patches and you really have to like really force it. It's also so elastic, like when you knot off the suture the skin stretches and the small holes stretch and the skin needs to bunch a little bit to make sure it touches to heal. And it needs to align right and not bunch on either side or overlap which can be hard sometimes when there is a very stretchy patch of skin or when the skin has been undermined from the tissue below. But overall once you have some practice you will easily get the hang of it especially when you have to grab the needle with forceps eg pliers, tongues, tweezers etc but they help make knots by wrapping the thread against the shank part. Sometimes your own hands get a bit in the way😅

Aww thank you!!! Miss Matti it depends on what you want to learn, but yes! I have students just starting and some that have been sewing longer than I have been alive! If you want a community aspect, with Q&A opportunities each month and challenges to keep yourself accountable and on track for what it is you want to learn, than yes! The current lessons you can access straight away are based around refashioning and altering ready to wear, so if you need help with that, yes! The new lessons each month will be about mending, getting more professional finishes using pattern and how to make toiles and fit them on yourself and make those changes to the patterns... This is something i have wanted for a long time, Evelyn. I lost significant weight this year, and now the neckline and arms-eyes of tops are too big, lengths too long...but I do not have the funds to purchase a whole new wardrobe. A few littke tweeks here and there and your wardrobe can fit again! Eventually yes! Every month is new lessons on a variety of topics, so dealing with knitwear will be in there at some point!

Good question! All the principles of sewing are the same for either, it's the same skills used, just different fitting on bodies (obviously) and some finishes tend to suit menswear better than womens wear. But as long as you can see the difference yourself, you can just use the skills you learn and translate it to menswear, as you would interpret those skills to achieve any personal style you want to create! I didn’t see this question on your school’s website Q&A: is there a list of items provided we’d have to purchase before each class? Is each class singular project based or a continuous project built over the course of the classes?

Hi! VSS is a little different then most! VSS is skills based. So It really focus on teaching all the skills of sewing and garment making. Our workshops and projects are designed to facilitate the learning of the skills. So, we have entire courses on subjects like everything about your machine, needles, basic sewing, learning about fabrics and how to pick them and use them, reading and understanding patterns, measuring the pattern for size, grainlines, types of stitches, hande sewing, and then we look at each sewing skill such a s zips, , sewing piping, etc... You learn these skills so you can pick up any pattern, and refashion, and be able to work your magic! And then we have the workshops, which are the projects. These projects are designed mostly to practice the skills you are learning in the other lessons. Each project has details of what you need to compete it! I hope that explains it for you. I joining up! One thing I would love to learn is how to draft a pattern from a item of clothing that is still being worn. My 25 year old daughter HATES shopping and her clothes are literally fading away but there is really only one style of dress that she likes to wear. I've bought fabric to make this dress for her many times over, with different necks etc (I can do that adjustment) but she won't let me unpick the dress. Could you please, please, please do a session on this?

You don't need to unpick, just iron it & use a serrated tracing wheel to trace/pinprick the outlines of each garment piece onto paper. Then join the pinprick dots with a pencil, add your seam allowance around the shapes & cut. You now have a pattern.

Yes Joanne has the basic principle there, if you can change up the necklines I think you'll be able to trace around the pieces and put them together! It is something I am sure that will get covered in the school at some point, as everyone has that one item you just love right!

I'd love to join. I'm a professional "Sewer" - I made a 2 year industrial sewing and business class at a community college. But I'd love to learn more. I see sewing as a skill that develops over a lifetime. Sadly I don't have a credit card (it's not really common to have one under a certain yearly income in Germany). Oh my! I always thought i could sew, but recently I've been trying my hand at 30s patterns, and some of them have instructions that i i either don't have the terminology for, or that that just don't make sense to me. I'll think i get it, and then find myself thinking, no that can't be right... Hey there Evelyn! Your student from India! I’m 16 years old and have an online shop where I make and sell accessories for pets like bandanas, bows etc. I had never experienced sewing in my entire life but until a year ago, my mom got me a sewing machine and since then I have been sewing and I love it. I just wanted to know if we could keep sewing machines in air conditioned rooms? And sometimes when the AC is off, the room gets all watery which might also happen with the sewing machine. Is it bad? Thank you.

Rohit hello!! ❤❤ Oh you sell your makes!! That's so wonderful!! Goid on you! On your question, I would say it is better to be in air conditioning, as humidity is something that acually (over a long time) can contribute to breakdown of lots of electronics!

Hi Rohit, sorry to 'butt in', but I think you might actually have been asking "I live in a humid climate; how should I store my sewing machine if the room is wet with condensation when the A/C is not running?' If that is so, I'd recommend making a soft fabric cover to go over your machine, snug enough to fit inside the hard cover/case. If you do not have a hard case, It would be better to store the machine, covered, in a dry cupboard than to leave it in a humid room. Good luck with your sewing.
