So who knew there were real atolls in the Caribbean? What a great day of sailing. I still can't get over diving on anchors...... or even it moving under water!!! Most of my anchoring has been in muddy and silty water.... magical video ...except for the heat..... cheers Warren

Jordan, I appreciate your informative intros. They set the stage for what's to come and gives us what we need to know to look for it to happen. The Marines give a mission brief to their troops prior to executing any tactical movement and the format is summarized with the acronym SMEAC (smee-ak), which stands for SITUATION - MISSION - ENEMY - ADMINISTRATION - CONSOLIDATION (if I can remember right from what seems like a century ago!). If one category does not apply it is skipped. All can be applied to any mission even adventuring in paradise or dinghying in on that little rubber amphibious landing craft! ;)

Hank on sails on the jib, non self tailing winches, and a hand held compass. May not be the most modern but it is all serviceable. It means you are sailing. You guys rock. Good music too. I only have one thing to say. Don't go around picking up anchors and resetting them. You can get your hand caught between the chain and the anchor when a wave catches the boat and gives it a jerk and it will be a terrible way to drown. It's not worth it. Love you guys.

OMG! Your "Don't Panic" drink was the favorite drink of one of my old neighbors. He bought a couple of bottles of Campari a week and he and his wife would enjoy happy hour every night. They were both retired and enjoying life. Now I have to go get some of that Italian liqueur and give it a try. :-) Y'all are blessed to be able to see these beautiful islands. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome video. 👍👍 I single hand all the time. Rule #1 is to know what you are going to do before you do it and all the steps in sequence to do. #2 is never panic if something doesn’t go as planned. Usually only a couple steps, so no big deal. But if you panic and get something all wrapped or jammed up it can make for a rough time. Next step is to sail off the hook. And after all the years, I still never use the tack button.
@ExetPlan
@ExetPlan 6 жыл бұрын
Rule #3, always wear your offshore harness and tether yourself to the boat -always. In 40°-50° water, you only have 1-3 hours before death (hypothermia). In 60°-70° water, < 40 hours before death.

I just re-watched this episode and am harkening back to watching your Belize atol vids. One them, maybe the next one perhaps, you guys snorkel in what is the largest reef I've seen. Those are some of my favorite videos by you guys, true adventuring. Alas, I've got a 5'6" keel so cannot go to the same atolls? A year later and having been inspired by the two of you I live on my new (to me) first sailboat. She's a dream, a Pacific Seacraft 37' that I hope to sail down to Panama and then head to west just as you are about to do to Polynesia and a trade wind circumnavigation. But, I'll start with Baja, Sea of Cortez, mainland Mexico and Central America. I solo sail Coconut currently off San Diego and liked your tenacity to get it down to a workable solo system on your boat. Quite important in case one of you is ever incapacitated for some reason (I hope not) or, as in this video just to give the other a day to relax. I'll know if you've stuck with me as here is where I suggest you provide me a way to make a donation without using Patreon (Venmo)? As I can't possibly subscribe to all the sailing channels, I find Patreon a pain in the frickin ass but, I would like to send you guys a "thank you" occasionally. You may be on your way across the Pacific by now? I watched you fix your mast in Panama last week. Keep it up you inspire many!

Great job! A suggestion for dropping your anchor under sail would be to heave-to instead of heading into the wind. When you head into the wind, you still have to have a second person at the helm to keep the boat into the wind, otherwise you're on borrowed time to get the anchor down. Being "hove-to" will keep the boat (almost) stopped and stable while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, make a repair, etc. To "heave-to", get on a close haul, then tack to the opposite close haul *without* moving your head-sail. This will cause it to be back-winded. Turn back into the wind just slightly (so that you're just right inside the no sail zone), and you'll notice that your boat slows significantly and may even come to a complete stop. In this configuration, the head sail and rudder are opposing each other so you'll remain more or less sitting still. Lock the rudder in place and you can stay like this indefinitely while you drop the anchor, eat a sandwich, take a nap, make a repair, etc.
@jetlaggedchef6806

Interesting, that would take a lot of practice but I can see how it would be easier once you get it down. TBH, I've only finished ASA103 this year and am still practicing/learning maneuvers. Thank you for sharing the tip, I'm going to try this next weekend.

Two Buds in paradise..... wonderful. It was good to see you using the mizzen sail and I do wonder how Atticus handles with just the foresail and mizzen and no mainsail. I imagine that she would be well balanced and on a broad reach you could add the mizzen staysail into the mix. Very wise to practice as a single hander....... you never know when that might be an essential skill.

Jordon, something you might want to try when sailing/anchoring/ headsail doused/going to windward situation, is to have your mizzen sail flying. It might give you a little more propulsion and rearward center of effort to close haul that last leg. Also, remember to pop loose the sheets for the mail and mizzen once you drop the hook so the boat doesn't try sailing off your intended location...and remember that the booms can be swinging, heads up.

I like that you kept the old bronze winches when you did the refit. That small diameter handle on the winch handle looks dangerous though. If one of you fell, you could impale yourself on it. You could make a handle out of UHMW or nylon or even wood, which had a larger diameter, especially on the top. Just sayin'. So nice to see Atticus doing what she does best - trucking along, eating up those miles.

nice video. met you guys on Isla. Mentioned thin sand over coral experience I had at anchor years ago at Tulum If you have trouble anchoring, try a danforth. I know they don't reset as well when pushed beyond 90 degrees, but from personal experience at Tulum with thin sand over coral an undersized danforth on my boat held better than a guy that had two large CQR's set as he dragged during the night of a 30 mph plus blow one night. We held just fine on rode with 30 feet of chain. I had a westsail 32 at the time with if memory serves a 15 pound dandforth. I think it was Nigel Caulder in his book recommended the danforth for such conditions. (it was not my idea stole it as with many other ideas) Nice video. glad to see you guys escaped the draw of Isla which is a great place to get trapped. Love the place. Terry

Great vid guys. Love the channel! Don’t wait until you are perfect with the single handing before giving Desiree her shot. Love how you guys are learning the “right way”. One suggestion would be to trim the bottom tip of the dead cat though. It’s quite distracting for video geeks. Another option is to get it higher off the camera. I rigged a video light with a cold shoe on top to do this years ago. Having a simple hot shoe vid light can help with fill for harsh shadows on bright days too. Also helps open up faces and see the person in front of the sunset. Also looks like you have some dust on the sensor. Google sensor cleaning. If you haven’t already. Sending love your way. Keep at it you guys rock!
