I'm out of that industry now, but when I was doing hotel AV work, I would have loved having a flipper. Dozens of TV types, and just needing to change input or volume often left me walking a show floor with cargo pockets full of remotes. The ninja remotes were cool, but it took so long to go from unit to unit. Not to mention, having a dedicated RF spectrum analyzer. One of those is still going to end up in my toolbox at some point. Love the opensource "I have a problem, I bet other people need it as well."

Flipper Zero is useless in 9/10 hotel keycard emulation attempts, as most businesses had their cards and readers upgraded from 'Mifare Classic' to 'Mifare Plus' or 'Mifare DESFire' back in 2010... It's just an expensive toy that only works on the most oooooold piece of shit systems in broke-as-fuck businesses who refuse to update their access control.

One of the things about the "restricted frequencies" means that if you have like, a garage door opener from the mid 1990's, then it probably runs on frequencies that have since been restricted. Your old equipment is grandfathered in and not in violation of FCC stuff, but you making a new remote to open it is kind of in a grey area. So, if you use something like the unleashed firmware, your flipper can now open the garage door you own.
@JP-WC
@JP-WC Ай бұрын
Some things aren't grandfathered, but also aren't a big enough issue for the FCC to actually care. They changed frequencies in wireless mic ranges and tons of consumer level systems had to be replaced (or for a narrow part of the ranges you could get an FCC license to continue use). We had to replace a decent percentage of ours because we couldn't claim ignorance, luckily our vendor had a subsidized rebate program for the old ones. You can still see the old banned ranges on mics in all kinds of places from churches to community centers, but the output on those are so low that even if someone reported it they would have be in the building when the mic is in use to even check, which isn't worth the time it would take to even file the paperwork.

There were universal remote apps for the Palm Pilot! There were even universal remote apps for the HP 48 calculator's IR "data transfer" system. (I had way too much fun in class in high school with my HP 48.)
@HaloInverse
@HaloInverse 2 ай бұрын
I used to have a PalmPilot, can vouch for this. Unfortunately (at least on mine) the IR transciever was designed to work at fairly close ranges (e.g. transferring data between two PalmPilots), and didn't have enough oomph to reliably control a TV at normal TV-watching distances, let alone TV-mischief distances. The implementation was proto-NFC, not proto-Bluetooth. You _could_ buy IR amplifiers for PalmPilots, but I never saw them for sale locally, sadly.

Ah.. and my personal guess, why the Flipper Zero doesn't support it: The Flipper focusses on the most interesting bands where you find most consumer hardware: on the ISM bands. That's 315 MHz and 915 MHz in the US; in Europe that's 433 MHz and 868 MHz. There is quite a gap between 468 and 868 MHz. It also skips PMR446.

That doesn't make much sense as in most other countries outside the US, there's only one tax rate and products are labelled with their price incl. VAT. So, £165.55 for the UK and 197.15€ for Germany are much more realistic. (It's on Amazon for £171-£180 and 193€ ATM.)

Governments freaking out about the flipper. /meanwhile/ Me with an old LG G4 that has an IR blaster which I've used to turn off menus, can receive radio using headphones as an antenna and tune to amateur channels with an app, can scan and send NFC, etc.

Appreciate the detailed breakdown! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?

I swear, the number of times I've seen these little buggers on websites for 3D printing projects... Because I guess you can build you own with like a Raspberry Pi Zero and a 3D printed case or something? I did always think that it was kind funny that you could change someone's TV channels with it, but to be able to unlock a Hotel door, that's... oof.

Why can't a smartphone be turned into a flipper zero ?
@Elisei_
@Elisei_ 2 ай бұрын
1. They don't have the required hardware. 2. Phones cost the same if not more as a flipper zero. 3. You would have to make a completely new operating system for it and it'd be challenging as different phones have different hardware.

Damn, I could've used a flipper zero when I needed to replace the harddrive in my Sony DVR, which requires the service remote.

Sony gen 1 TiVo? I just resuscitated mine. Lost the remote, but had an old harmony that worked.

Nope, it's a Sony RDR HXD870. I had to order the service remote in and do some wizardry with a new drive. Once done though it was running nicely 👌
