They say you need 10,000 hours...and they're probably right😂 I don't think I'll be getting called for gigs any time soon but I've been wanting to try and make a video like this for awhile now. I think I could get way more done in 30 days but to be honest I don't want to practice trumpet for 30 days in a row😅 Anyways sorry for the inconsistent lighting from day to day. I don't make videos with this set up very often so I'm still trying to figure it out. Let me know if you want me to do another one of these challenges and what else you want me to include in them. Thanks for watching!

Every nerve ending in my trumpet playing body exploded when you said where’s the reed lol. It’s interesting seeing this because it’s basically all of the problems that me and my friends have but compounded and much more obvious. Interesting hearing your perspective on it and seeing that we still have many of these beginner issues in our fifth and sixth years. I’ll try to work on it lol.

Thanks!!! This was great. I played trumpet in grade school, played flute in my 20’s, picked the trumpet back up in my late 30’s, was messing around with a tenor sax when I was 40 and my wife told me to sell my trumpet and buy a sax, I did, a mark VII, been playing the sax for the last 30 years. I’ve always been self taught, play by ear, but I just got the itch for trumpet again so I bought one. So at 70, here goes!!! Loved your honesty!!!

During school I had an hour on bari sax then directly after an hour on tuba. I started tuba last year and could play it well enough for a concert in a few months with only less than a hour a day. I also learned bass clarinet for a musical this past year. That was interesting, I showed up for the audition on tenor sax(also one I don't play normally) and no one was playing it so I said I could. I was playing like once or twice a week for only a few hours but I learned it well enough for the performances. The embouchures are so different:/ Luckily next years musicals both have bari sax parts (My main instrument.) edit: I got in on both tenor and bass clarinet for the musical I was in. It's also very hard for me to practice at home because I play very large instruments and have a lack of time:/

I love dragging both my bass clarinet and tenor saxophone to or from school at the same time 😭 I've done it before (only when getting a drive), but I plan ahead so I don't have to yet still can practice. I play tenor in jazz, and bass clarinet in concert band!

@kiytheghost371 Yeah, Bb is automatically what I default to. I started on Bb clarinet before switching to bass clarinet, and it's pretty much the same, so I can still play Bb clarinet, I just don't play it often. I can transpose between Bb and concert pitch, but I only know that for Eb, it's 3½ tones up from concert pitch? I think? All I remember is Bb is G, so that's all I remember.

Those keen eye trumpeters out there will notice little red ring on the upper lip. :) A common thing I see in beginners, usually means pulling back trying to force the notes. I think that is why a lot of people say to only rest the pinky on top instead of hooking it so it is harder to pull back into the notes.

My second comment! I returned the trumpet I bought last year because I struggled so much learning the correct embouchure. I just realised it could be because of how my lips are formed! I also have these gaps on each side like you. I just ordered a ptrumpet hytech as to not waste a lot of money and try to change my embouchure to the side! Maybe it helps me finally learning the correct embochure! 😊

A little late to the video, but as a fellow college saxophonist who picked up the trumpet I have two tips 1) Arban’s conservatory method was a great book. 2) Blow the air towards the top of the mouthpiece to get the higher notes. It automatically thins your airstream.

Bass clarinet is fun! The range is so much larger than saxophones (low Eb below the staff up to high G above the staff (Db and F concert pitch)). I hate that the tenor saxophone only goes down to Bb (Ab concert pitch), I want the low notes 😭 Especially for the arrangement of blue monk we play in class. It's in Bb concert, so the triplet then dropping down an octave I can't do because it's the low G. I could try playing it an octave up, but then I'd have to play altissimo notes, which I haven't practiced much on tenor. Though tenor cuts through the band better! Also today I played tenor madness with others for the first time in a while (we played it last year in class and decided to resurrect the tunes we played last year by playing them at lunch). I need to start working on expanding my range again, I didn't play enough over the summer so I lost some of my range (I lost altissimo on bass clarinet, though I can still reach it just not as easily). I got my tenor from my teacher about a year ago, the biggest difference I found from the bass clarinet was the embrochure. It wasn't a huge difference, but I found it annoying. The fingerings are very similar, just more pinky keys on clarinets!

Actually isn’t that bad to be honest. I play alto and trumpet, hardest thing about trumpet is really jus learning how to get that breath going. The chops and music knowledge were already there, and the notes were pretty easy. But to consistently get that air going is petty hard, while also increasing or decreasing air speed

Also I heard that there was some crackling on your notes due to build up of spit, so get rid of the spit from the trumpet more frequently. You got it exactly right: the main problem is that even if you want to, you can't really practice all day long :( If you continued for a couple more weeks you'd have reached the point where the lips start to accumulate fatigue, your playing worsens, and it destroys your mental fortitude xD Amazing job with the fingering. Made it look so easy (which it is, but I play the trumpet and I wanna moan about it)

This is very impressive for 7 days! There is a «trick» for getting the «buzz» that works for almost 100% of people that have never tried a brass instrument before: Put the tip of your thumb in your mouth and close the lip around it, then «spit» the thumb out and the lips should be making a buzz for most people. After doing that it should be easy to recognize and replicate, and then transfer that to the mouthpiece and instrument. :)

The mouthpiece looked like a Schilke mouthpiece to me. They use a different numbering system.
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 ай бұрын
Got a closer look. It's a Schilke 13 A4a, which is more suited for big band. Still, better than starting on a 7c (which is the default mouthpiece that comes with pretty much every trumpet). The Schilke numbering system works differently than the Bach system. With Bach, the diameter increases as the numbers get lower. Schilke does the opposite. A 13 on a Schilke is roughly the same diameter as a Bach 1 1/2 C. A4a refers to the cup depth, rim shape, and throat of the mouthpiece. I don't remember exactly which one corresponds to which number, but the rim is flat (distributes pressure more evenly for better endurance, but reduces accuracy), the cup is shallow (helps compress air more for playing in the upper register), and the throat is small (again, helps with the upper register).

Starting on a jazz lead mouthpiece probably didn't make things easy. Once your embouchure has developed, that type of mouthpiece is well suited to playing in the upper register for extended periods of time. Until then, a smaller diameter mouthpiece with a deeper cup (such as a Bach 5c) would be beneficial.

One way to fix sloppy notes is by fixing your ambashure. Only firm up the corners of your mouth, leave the center loose.

Are you planning on continue playing the trumpet in like a little series or something? Bc I think if you just get some small advices from a trumpet player you will progress so much faster. (For example simply oiling your valves the richtige way would have given you better results at the end, I swear 😊) Nevertheless the results after just one week are pretty amazing. I think every teacher would be grateful to have a student playing that piece of music after learning the instrument for just a few days 😅

bros using a shilcke 13a4a which is like a "cheater mouthpeice" still really good but theres no wonder he could go so high on the first day, and also i never knew tenor madness was so popular i played it for my jazz band college audition and i thought it was some small song at the moment

i can definitely relate to playing on the side but its better to play with the middle of your mouth. i never really understood why but for me i noticed that ive gotten better with using the middle of my mouth after doing so many longtone exercises.

A slight offset is normal. Perfectly centered is the exception rather than the rule.
