Learning what I did wrong: the final 24 with Mr. Huck

I know we learn from our mistakes but I sure with I had a re-do with this one. We are going to miss this little fella.

Please consider using a special section of the shop or garage as a protected area ( like the stalls at ISS) as a hospital-like area to keep any injured goat with open wounds & injuries impacting their mobility & to set up such an area for the pregnant goats for safe birthing areas. Again, like the protected stalls at ISS. The coyotes will be back. They live there. It’s not a matter of “if,” but “when.” The goats were also more protected when Dixie and Beverly were nearby. Baby goats, the placenta & afterbirth will attract the coyotes & other predators.

Hi Lester, I lived on a farm, and we had a coyote den down in the back field. I also had 7 fur babies ( dogs), and I'm here to tell you that when they are training their pups to hunt, it was horrible. I saw the pups coming to try and get one of my smaller fur babies to follow them, and if I wasn't outside, they would have got her. When the adults saw me running after my dog to get her the adults called their babies, there were about 8 of them in broad daylight. That night, I could hear the coyotes screaming but couldn't see them. I heard a shot gun go off at the farm down the road a bit and found out that they pulled a calf out of mom. So plz. Don't blame yourself as they are evil animals. It got so bad that the game warden put a bounty on them. I live in Ontario 🇨🇦. You did what was best for Huck he would have never of survived. RIP Mr. Huck.

Coyote's are no less evil then the rest of the wild feral animals. Usually, good livestock dogs will not engage coyotes. The will rather chase them...in which the coyotes will run. My dog (Abby) was attacked by a group of juvenile coyotes...about 4-5. Abby is a Doberman and she held her own. However, she needed replacement knee surgery which took 2 surgeries over 6 months. As well as, she had to get 37 sutures to about 15 puncture wounds. Due to that incident we got another Dobie and professionally trained. Due to where the incident occurred. We believe Abby was protecting me and my wife. The coyotes came quiet close to our back fenced in backyard. We live on 517 acres of land. And we've only lost a few chickens to the foxes. We didn't attempt to dispatch the coyote pack. Because several packs will come to claim the area. We simple take plenty of precautions and exist with one another. The coyotes know they can NOT come close to our home. We cleared out the trees so we have at least a 150 yard wide open space to the wood line. Makes it much more riskier for the coyotes to try and kill something. And I've shot at their direction enough times. Now, the pack is at the far end of our property. If I hear them close, I simple fire a few rounds off of 5.56 mm. Also coyotes hate light be shined at them. That will quiet them up real fast. Our dogs can come inside or outside as they wish. Why there's a fenced in area for them. But they enjoy sleeping on our back deck watching...it's what doberman's do. Colder months, inside on our bed.

It must’ve been so hard for Lester to see sweet Huck in such a state. I can’t even imagine his trauma. All the animals knew what was happening. It all started when the goats were in a circle scared to death a while back. Please watch for signs of distress and take it seriously. As an RN and a hospice nurse (13 plus years), I know hearing is usually the last to go. I'm sure it's the same with animals. Mr. Huck knew you were there, and I promise you that. Lester number one please stop blaming yourself nature and owning a farm nature in many ways always takes a course I shared a video of livestock Guardian dogs the Anatolian Shepherd I think you and Jamie should check into it maybe they would be the best dogs for the babies for the Farm have them trained I think that would be a fantastic investment for you guys I know you're great peonies are good but they're not Anatolian Shepherds livestock Guardian dogs you could raise them with the other dogs and they will all work as protectors especially Fiona Millie and if you bring your son's dog the Great Pyrenees Great Pyrenees are not Fighters and coyotes may lead Fiona or Milly away so the pack will try to lead them away to kill them

Lester, Huck’s story that you’ve shared will help all of us. Our neighborhood has coyotes running presently and I never knew. Two separate neighbors have lost cats. Once I saw your story of precious Huck, I went on internet and researched coyotes. They have excellent night vision. They are good swimmers (so the river there bordering your property won’t deter them). They can and will climb fences or dig under to get food source. Prayers for your babies to stay safe and I know you will make provisions now for additional safety measures. Hunger pushes animals to extremes so now you know what they will push to do for food sources. Hugs! It hurts even more to lose a baby that we know can’t truly defend itself. Lori Griffin... I had a coyote come right up onto my front porch and grab, kill and take off with one off my cats one evening.... They don't care. If they see the animal, they'll go for it. I even had a neighbor tell me that he was walking his little dog in his backyard and a coyote came into his yard and tried to run off with the dog WHILE on his leash!!! 👿😢 They are devil dogs. 🤬🤬

I’m a retired therapist and wondered if you and your family would do something. Please include Connor, Lex and LE. Would you make one of your charts listing those “wrong” events in purple and also list all of the good things you all have done for Huck and all the babies. Lester, I did something similar a couple of years ago. I also have a refuge here, very small but I love all babies I get. I had 12 guinea hens I rescued as babies. For 18 years I have had different babies and have always kept them locked up tight, especially at night. When the guinea hens matured they decided that they did not want to go into lockdown. They wanted to perch in the trees. The first night went well and I let them out a second night. Around 9:30 at night I took my dog out and they were all laying under our area light. Something told me I should try to put them in but I didn't want to have to fight with them to go in. The next morning when I woke up there were feathers all over. Every one of my guinea hens were killed by coyotes. They did not eat them but killed them all around my yard and the neighbors yard. We had to search for them and collect them. It was horrifying. They were indeed coyotes and they came right up by our house. I heard nothing. I live with that horrible feeling how I failed to protect them. I know the hurt and guilt you feel. Never again will I make the same mistake. I pray God gives you peace and know that you will rejoin him in Heaven someday. 🙏❤️. Let your mind and heart forgive yourself and be at rest. ❤️❤️

Yet our Lester is currently shattered; that’s the hardest thing to be - shattered yet still having to do the activities of daily living.

We have coyotes running in our housing area in California. They’ve killed a lot of cats and dogs and they jump fences where they can, so pets aren’t even safe in their own fenced in backyard. Don’t ever underestimate a predator. They are not afraid. Also Lester, if there’s a pack of coyotes…I think they could take down an ostrich by grabbing a leg, hopefully I’m wrong. Please keep all your gates closed ..always

The coyotes need to be culled to prevent further attacks on the babies !!! Someone needs to hunt them and eliminate them to prevent eminent threats to any of the other animals at LHL !! You are right, coyotes can and will jump fences and get into the pasture because they are blood thirsty predators!

You are right when I lived in AZ in a beautiful complex for 55 and older. We had a horrible problem with them killing dogs and cats. It was so sad.

Debbie, I have thought the same. I’m afraid that a pack of coyotes would take down an ostrich. The ostrich might take down a few, but not all. Maybe it is a blessing that Carl was not with Huck. It’s all just so sad and we all are hurting with them.🙏

Agree. Where I live in Washington state, there are an unbelievable amount of Coyote, Bobcat and Black bears, especially this year for some reason. They scale fences, attack during the day, run around the streets in broad daylight, and it's in the city!! They can take down a solo Ostrich I firmly believe if there are enough of them. The goats need to be with more than just Carl. They need the donkeys! The Coyotes WILL come back, no doubt in my mind. I pray they dont...

It takes a big man…a humble man to admit a mistake…hindsight, as the saying goes, is 20/20. Your heart was in the right place thinking that you were doing the best for Mr. Huck with his injuries… We have urban coyotes up here in Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 & they actually are not afraid to go into back yards & have taken small dogs & cats..I’ve seen them on the streets early in the mornings when I take my dogs out for their walks… In our world famous Stanley Park here, coyotes have come out of the forest & bit people as they jogged & even went after little kids. Coyotes are opportunistic & will do anything for food..they adapt to their environment. Now that they know there are vulnerable animals at LHL’s..they’ll be back. But..now you know what you have to do..I think with Carl & Tat in with the goats at night they WILL be safe. But Wile E. Coyote is stealthy & cunning… I pray all your vulnerable animals will stay safe.🙏🏻

👋🏻🙂 Long time ISS follower, almost from the beginning. So many people will carry the memory of that little goat on the Jeep, forever. We watched you and Jami fall deeper in love on that porch, feeding Huck & Shirley Bird. Many other adventures… New loves & Tough losses. Such a brave Survivor our Hucky was. I learned through ISS that goats tend to be faint of heart, when they’re sick, or even just Sad… they can pass away so easily, because they just give up. Huck NEVER Gave Up. The Heart of a Lion even when his Body was failing him😢. But he Always always always Overcame it. Stood his Ground against a Coyote. Lester, Those coyotes would have targeted him for weeks after if they hadn’t gotten him that night. How could you have known? Be kind to yourself- his tragic loss is enough pain, just enough. Thank you for sharing your world with us. We love them… and you. Hugs to you all for such a sad, sudden loss❤

Lester, even if you did leave the gate open- coyotes can jump and clear fences 6-8 ft high…they can drag their pray over- I have seen videos…I know it’s hard to not blame yourself, we all do it, but it was not your fault, just a horrific unforeseen event. We all have guilt and hindsight when we loose loved ones, animals or people. It is impossible to let that guilt go, but we must learn and do our best to never have something like that happen again. Losing Huck as you did was also a learning lesson, making him a teacher as well. Honor him daily by doing your best to protect all the other babies. That is what Mr Huck would want you to do! He will always be there with you, helping to protect his herd and family. He knew he was loved!

@Colorista_1 Over at Cog Hill Farm, they had a predator problem, but it was a fox. I came by one day overnight and too peahen eggs that they were periodically checking up on. Sadly, the fox very likely got a hold of the eggs or hatchlings. They got help from a nearby animal trapper who eventually scared to fox away days after the incident.
